Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Working with Nathaniel has been a pleasure! I have a 2 year old French bulldog who had issues with aggression and possessiveness. Nathaniel showed me the foundations, tones, and commands it takes to train a dog. With just 5 sessions I was able to see immense improvement in my dog. Big Thank you to Silver Dog Training. Wendy is a peach! My "rescued dog" Hunter, a dachshund, is very skitish with people and other dogs, but from the moment Wendy walked into our home, Hunter received her as a friend! That in itself says a lot. After 6 weeks, we have now taken him, with Wendy's guidance, to the local dog park for the first time since we have had him, and maybe the first time in his life, and contrary to my worst fears, he was very well behaved, which I can only credit to Wendy's affectionate and patient dog (and people) training. I would highly recommend Puppy Dog Luv/Wendy Heller for training!

Kim has been great with helping my dog adjust to a new environment, we just moved across the country! She is also helping me get my dog ready for an airplane trip. 10 out of 10 I would pick Kim again for my dog training needs! I love that she advocates for treat praise instead of an ecollar for dog correction!

When I contacted Nathaniel about dog training I was absolutely desperate for a solution. I couldn’t choose between my dogs and girlfriend so we needed to find a solution. With Nathaniel, we learned so many things about dogs and ourselves. He was extremely informative about dog behaviors and human responses. Our home has been much better and we look forward to continue practicing and the training that Nathaniel has taught us! Thank you so much for all you have done for us and our fur family!! - James and Victoria :)

When my sweet pit bull started biting other dogs I was very upset and worried for him. Franco explained to me he was protecting me and my small dog. He trained me to train my dog and showed me how to take the leadership role in my pack. Now we can calmly walk by squirrels and duck’s no problem! My dogs won’t run out the door when it’s left open or take food from the floor without permission! All in a few weeks. He’s truly incredible. My life is so much less stressful now.

5-Stars aren't enough. Rosie is simply wonderful. She has exceeded our expectations by leaps and bounds. This is our first puppy and we wanted to work with an experienced, professional trainer. We are thrilled we found Rosie on Thumbtack. She has been totally responsive in answering our questions or addressing our challenges. Her demeanor with our dog, Sunny, is super. Sunny immediately responded to Rosie and has made great progress in her in training. He did great with my two small dogs. They have barked so much on walks all the time and within just a few training sessions I have seen a huge difference in their confidence and the barking. I really like that he cares for the animal and how they feel (did not push my dogs when they weren’t comfortable) and was very informative on questions I had. Really glad to have found him as a trainer!!! Would totally recommend.

Had a great training session with Gerard. We went over crate training and some basic obedience commands with the process. He was punctual, calm with my anxious/active dog and gave great directions. He listened and went through all my questions and concerns with actions to take along with consistency. Totally recommend Gerard to others!

I was a little hesitant to sign up 4 year old English Staffy for the 2 week onboarding training with Dillon. Now my only regret is not doing sooner! Dillon is amazing with dogs and cares for them as his own. He is very knowledgeable and has a lot of patience. My dog came home obedient and playful with improved manners! I’m very pleased.

It has only been two weeks but already I see amazing changes in how my dogs walks. Franco is helping not only how my dog behaves, but helps me know how to help her be better behaved. I recommend him to my daughter for training her 4 month old puppy and she is very happy also.

Dillon responded quickly to our need of training our 5 month old Dalmatian. He did an evaluation and accepted him into his next session of classes. We picked our puppy up after 2 weeks of training. He was able to stay or “place” really well. He is better with potty training now. He can walk on a leash and before he was a very stubborn walker. I notice different improvements every day. I have only had my dog back for 3 whole days so we are still training and enforcing his new behaviors every day.

We've always had dogs so we were not concerned when we rescued our new dog. Henry had issues with leash, jumping on people and dogs AND nipping. However, the serious issue was he could immediately switch from cute little dog and become hyper and what we thought was aggressive if person or dog would turn their back. Not good! Immediately we tried local pet store - group training. He was very disruptive and they suggested we add socialization via their day care program. However, after initial evaluation - they wouldn't even take him. We weren't going to let Henry fail!!! We researched and found Thommy Harley and Canine Compassion and Healing on Thumbtack. Reading his values and descriptions on his site drew us to him. Thommy walked into our home and our crazy little dog was not threatened by his calming demeanor and it appeared they instantly understood each other. Thommy trained ME by explaining what triggered Henry and why. You can't "change" a behavior if you don't understand the why. First session - I knew Henry was going to succeed! Few days later, we met Thommy in a hectic environment - shopping center, pet store, walking spaces with lots of sounds, distractions, trucks, people, animals. Unbelievable! Henry walked - no tugging on leash, gently approaching dogs and people and while he was still VERY interested in everything going on, he wasn't aggressive or barking hysterically. He seemed to understand he could be curious and confident at same time. It was all how Thommy directed Henry and ME throughout our outing! Thommy has given us tips on feeding, toys, activities and other resources to investigate. Don't hesitate to read Thommy's thoughts on dog behavior. "Compassion and Healing" tells you everything. Call him so you and your dog can become confident and joyful!

I've had dogs my whole life and most often trained my rescues myself. My baby, Tobyn, however, has had some co-dependency issues stemming from the dominance of my larger dogs. This made him scared of well, just about everything. This was a behavior I was having no success overcoming. Thommy immediately took to Tobyn (and he to Thommy), brought about immediate changes, and has since been teaching him about "the amazingly exciting world". We have come so far in such a short amount of time. We can now enjoy walks, go on car rides, and we've even been to the dog park all on our own without needing his brothers "OK". The growth I've seen is tremendous and I look forward to continued learnings (including for me personally). Thank you, Thommy, for your love, compassion, and understanding. I would recommend you to anyone and already brag to friends and family. Truly an amazing find in a world with very few valuable training options.

Around 8 years ago I used Cliff's services for my 2 pomeranians first as a trainer and then for boarding. My 2 poms LOVED him and would get so excited when they saw him. They both have now passed and 6 months ago I adopted a 2 year old Shepherd Mix named Sailor. He had already been returned twice and had severe separation anxiety as well as other behavioral issues. We tried working with another trainer for a few weeks, and even though she was a very sweet lady, our dog Sailor did not improve. So we decided to hire Cliff again, and oh my goodness, Sailor is a new dog!!! From day 1, Sailor starting improving. Cliff is very knowledgable and very patient. If your fur baby is having any behavioral issues or just need some training, call Cliff, he is great! Thank you Cliff! We love you!!! Sailor, Enid and Noel
