I hired Jill because I was in need of help with grad school applications and an improved GRE score. I was extremely stressed out with the whole process, but Jill assured me everything was going to be ok. & It has been!!! So far, I have met with Jill 6 times. The first couple sessions, we went over my personal statement essay. She helped me organize it and made it flow smoother. I felt great about the outcome. The next few sessions, we concentrated on the GRE - analytical writing portion. She coached me on how to write an effective essay to earn my goal score. & Sure enough, I retook the GRE after our 5th session and brought my score up from a 2.5 to a 3.5! I COULDN'T BE ANY MORE PLEASED with my progress. Jill has continued to work with me on individualized essays that I will need to turn in as well. Even during hurricane Harvey when we were not able to meet, Jill edited one of my essays and sent it to me. I am so grateful to have found such an amazing tutor for a price that is within my budget. You will not regret hiring Jill as your tutor, I can assure you that. Especially if you struggle with writing!

Julie Garisto, as Arts Editor for Creative Loafing in Tampa Bay, FL, has done an incredible job at turning the rambling musings of my artist statements and press releases into event listings and articles that generate both excitement for and insight into my work. Further, her guidance at Creative Loafing leaves a reader with the impression that Tampa Bay is a vital cultural hub. Julie Garisto, both as a person and because of her writing and editing skills, is an indispensible member of the Tampa Bay community.

I've worked with Lynnet of Lynnet's Professional Touch on many occasions and her service has always exceeded my expectations. I reach out to her often for various editing and writing projects related to my own business and she is always timely and accommodating of my turnaround time. She's great to work with because she asks good questions and always overdelivers. It's clear that she loves what she does and I appreciate that as a repeat client. Her early learning resources are impressive. Her flash cards are premium quality and since they are laminated my daughter has spilled stuff and got them dirty but I just wipe the off and keep using them. I've purchase the ABC, colors, and number flash cards for my little one and will be back for more. When my school-aged kids needed a private tutor I reached out to her. She was patient, she listened to their struggles, helped them work through them, and was prompt and prepared each session. She researched anything she was unfamiliar with and helped my kids develop their research skills as well. She was great and well worth it. Lynnet's Professional Touch offers so many enriching services and delivers every single time. Her work is top notch and her rates are well within reason for the quality of her work. You will get more than what you pay for and you'll be glad that you hired her.

I was in the process from transitioning from the classroom into administration in the school system and my resume needed some work. I sent my original resume to Aptitude Learning & Development Services (ALDS) and received a introductory phone call to talk about my aspirations and goals in life as well as what message I wanted my resume to project. Within a couple of days, I received a draft that had incorporated all of my ideas and then some. It was almost perfect but there were additional things I realize that I still wanted. ALDS was flexible and provided me with those edits and made a quick return on providing me with a professional resume with style. This was one of the easiest and most comfortable interactions that I have ever had with a company. I have received many interviews and recently accepted an offer a job that I really wanted. It was in part because I felt confident in emailing and presenting my resume to employers. Thank you for your help ALDS.

My name is Preston Copeland. Russil Tamsen has done a wonderful job at editing my middle grade novel "Saleena Sanchez & The Cursed Crown" and my short story "The Dock The Witch & The Schmuck." Russil is wonderful at helping the author to understand and develop their vision, while simultaneously helping to ensure that syntax is set precisely at a professional level. Russil is easy to work with, but firm in his edits, which from my experience have helped to elevate my fiction to another level. Even though he's not really a good tennis player, I never hold that against him. Instead, what he lacks in athletic ability, he makes up being a wonderful person and editor.

Eric has reviewed multiple short stories of mine. His critiques all encompassed a range of feedback, from line edits suggesting word choice and word placement to the "big picture"--thematic intention and the overall impact of my work. He was thorough and knowledgeable and (yikes) honest. But most importantly, he gave practical suggestions to take my work to the next level.

I am a doctoral candidate working on my literature review. I contacted Anne, who replied immediately, and was eager to learn how she could help. We had an introductory meeting and found Anne to be knowledgeable about the writing process and interested in the overall project. The second time we met we tacked my literature review for which she had great insight into how to change my outline. Anne has a natural grasp for writing and helping one to see how the flow works together. I will continue to use Anne and recommend her for editing and brainstorming. Rose M

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
