We were extremely fortunate to have had Dade County Food Group cater our wedding last week. Not only did they provide us with EXCELLENT service during our event but Brian was by far the EASIEST, most DOWN-TO-EARTH caterer to work with in the days leading up to our wedding. He helped us execute the vision we had by working within our budget and providing us with useful strategies about event flow and advice about different plating options and ingredients. At the end of the day, Brian and his team at Dade County Food Group prepared the most DELICIOUS food we have ever had at a wedding. The food was even better than what we tried during the tasting (which didn't seem possible!). All of our guests couldn't stop raving about the food and most went up and got seconds. Even abuela! Our guests even chanted his name during the reception!!! That's unheard of!!! In addition to the unbelievably tasty food, Brian's staff (waiters, water servers, bus boys, bartenders, chefs, etc) were friendly and fun but maintained their professionalism. At the end of the reception, Brian and his staff worked quickly and efficiently to remove all their equipment from the venue and they even helped our families pick up. Heck, they even arrived 1 day before the wedding to help set up! I know what you're thinking, "This sounds to good to be true." It's not. Brian and his team are thoughtful, honest, hard working, caring, and resourceful. And at the end of the day, they cook some REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD FOOD. At the very least you should contact DCFG for your catering needs. I promise you won't be disappointed with them. I guarantee they will cook the BEST DAMN FOOD you have ever tried. And if you don't agree, then please send the food my way because I have been dying for another bite ever since our wedding day!

Chef Jeff catered our wedding with made-to-order omelets and all the sides. It was great! From having us in his home for an omelet lunch tasting to bringing us flowers on our special day, he met all of our expectations and then some. Our guests all loved him and commented to us on his professionalism as well as his friendly personality. We can't thank him enough for all that he did to make our wedding brunch a success. We highly recommend him and are sure to hire him again for our next big party (or maybe even a private dinner for two)!

Paul was willing to put together a taste test as soon as we contacted him. The food was delicious and we felt comfortable with him in our kitchen right away. The day of the event (50th wedding anniversary on patio) the team showed up on time and ready. The service was impeccable. The fish was amazing but the beef a little tough. Paul was on hand only at the beginning of the event and would have liked that explained in advance not the day of the event. His team and their service was impeccable.

I hired David to cater my wedding and the food was simply fabulous! Best wedding food I have ever had. We had a few hick ups with rentals and turns out he didn't order enough on his end, but was easily fixed. Overall he did a great job and would definitely hire again.

I used Exquisite Catering to cater my wedding this weekend. We chose a Cuban theme and the meal was a huge hit with our guests! They were very accommodating through out the process as we had to change the number of guest a few times. I would highly recommend using Exquisite Catering for your event.

I had a great experience with TCG, considering it was a last minute event. I live in TX and was in Miami visiting my family when my brother told me he was getting married and was planning a small wedding ceremony. Mind you, this was about 8 days prior to his ceremony date. I searched for local catering companies and chose TCG. Alan, the manager, reached out to me via phone and e-mail. From the beginning he was very, very helpful and I greatly appreciate his professionalism and patience with the last minute event. He greatly helped me out choosing the right menu and the rental equipment at a low cost, fast, and convenient. I definitely recommend TCG and I'd use them again for future events. =) Thank you Alan!

We had service for a wedding reception in Hollywood FL. I was pleased with Tim's willingness to serve my guest promptly. My guest enjoyed the food and that was the most important to me. Upon seeing the dishes we had prepared for us I did feel the cost was too much. However, I had accepted the proposal and was willing to adhere to my agreement without discussion. In future, if you ask your hostess/host a question and you receive an answer, don't ask numerous times. I was asked for the flatware and dishes about 4 times, it drove me crazy!

Best choice for my wedding! From the moment a met Chefs Valeria and Alex I knew I had made the right choice. They understood the challenges of my venue and the mix of guests, and helped me tailor the menu for the evening. They even crafted a cocktail menu with unique names just for us! The day of the wedding it was all perfect, I heard nothing but great things from all my guests about the food, presentation and professionalism of the staff. It was an overall amazing experience working with this group, they really go out of their way to accommodate and work with you, plus the food its absolutely delicious!! Thank you again! Hulda and Mike!

I met Renee by referral, as I was planning a wedding for two dear friends. Her energy, and expertise were the perfect fit! As is the case with any formal affair, there were daily changes, and I'm sure I was making her crazy! However, she never waivered, and kept her focus and energy. The food was exceptional! We chose to have three themed 'food stations'... Asian, Latin, and Mediterranean. and it was an elegant white on white affair! The location was at the Brides' home, on the water, under a clear topped tent, with amazing lighting, and under a full moon! She also handled the creation of huge and stunning Ice Vases as centerpieces. Her attention to detail, and her follow up were critical, and she and her crew received a rousing applause from the wedding guests! I even managed to get her out of the kitchen and onto the dance floor, for "Because I'm Happy!" One additional note... I was not only the wedding planner, but I was also in the wedding party, so my nerves were on edge, being at the church, while things unfolded at the reception. We arrived in our limos to find everything moving right along as planned! Hope to work with her team again in the future. Everything was Absolutely Delish! Thank you, Renee!!

Chef O is the best! and I'm not one to hand out praise very freely. The food was on point and very well executed (we should have ordered even more :) even though we were very well fed), service and attention to detail was top notch, and we felt like we were dealing with an old friend and not just a chef for hire. You won't regret using these guys. Thanks again chef! We will be using you again real soon.

I hired Robyn and her Palate Party crew to cater at my wedding in May and I could not have been more pleased with their food, overall display, and service. Throughout the whole planning period, Robyn was very flexible and listened to what we wanted as a couple. She worked within our budget and always had delicious, creative ideas for the meal! I would recommend her to ANYONE. Robyn was slaving away in her food truck all day making our wedding food and she even came out to greet the guests personally and refill their wine glasses! Overall, Robyn is a wonderful person and caterer!

Rosalia's food is AMAZING!! It's like having your grandmother cooking for you, preparing your favorite meals every week. It's also so easy to order online - plus I can customize my order and swap out ingredients for healthy options. Love that! I've even had them cater a party at my house and their empanadas are to die for - they were gobbled up in seconds! The kids loved them - a real crowd pleaser.

Excellent service and food. We were very pleased and our guests were pleased. Nobody's perfect but they were close to perfect. The price was extremely reasonable. Chef Mer volunteered to come by our house in the days before our wedding to pick up supplies (cups, plates, etc) that we would have otherwise had to bring ourselves - and he did it at no additional cost to us. He also volunteered to go to Restaurant Depo to pick up champagne flutes for us because we couldn't find them on our own. Again, he did this at no cost to us. He cut our cake and served our champagne. He's just a nice guy. You will not be disappointed. Thank you, Chef! :)

Very professional team. Extremely efficient, organized, creative and caring to every little detailed demanded from the customer. Grapes & Olives catered our wedding this June (2018) which was 100% organic, vegan, soy and gluten free. It cannot get more demanding than that and they pulled off the most delicious and varied buffet. They blew all the guest away. I would recommend them to anyone for any type of event. You will for sure get the best you possibly can get!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
