Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

The roof was leaking in several places and one spot was dripping on the carpet. We set up an appointment and it was raining lightly at that time. Alex still went on the roof to assess the places that needed repair. He actually called saying he wanted to look things over again when it was dry, which he did. He completed the repairs in just a few hours. With the summer rains and winds, I keep telling my friends "My roof doesn't leak". He did great work at a more than reasonable price. I would recommend Cape Coral Roofing to everyone needing roof work.

The very personable owners arrived promptly at the time agreed to, assessed the problem, and assured us that we did NOT need a whole new roof! We hired them to address two roof issues we had not previously noted, and are now awaiting the actual proposal, and date for the work to be completed.

ReRoof did an outstanding job negotiating with my insurance company and getting me a new roof! I’m very pleased with every aspect of the job, from initial contact with Brandon to the crew that installed the new roof and performed interior ceiling repairs. Everyone was professional and the process was as smooth as butter! I couldn’t be happier and recommend ReRoof 100%.

Ruben, did a great job on my roof, I was in need of a roofer and needed my roof replaced, he not only got back to me right away, he waited for me to make my decision not pressuring me, and he has great prices. He gave me a five year warranty which was what I needed. I definitely recommend him if you need help!

I signed the re-roofing contract for my house in Fort Myers on February 16, 2018, and paid 50% of the cost on February 19. Took them two weeks to apply online for the permit with Lee County and another two weeks to start the job... They failed first roof inspection on March 21 and took another two weeks to remedy the problem and have it re-inspected. Universal Contracting finally finished the roof in mid April but failed the final inspection on April 18. Since then I'm trying to find out when they'll remedy the problems and get the roof re-inspected so I can insure the property. Lately, their representative doesn't take my calls anymore and doesn't reply to my emails. When I'm calling their office in Naples I'm transferred to the Customer Service in Orlando where they don't know what's going on and promise to call me back, which never happens... Today are seven weeks since I awarded them the work and the job is not completed. Very frustrating...

My whole experience could not have gone better thanks to Ruben who ran this Flat Roof replacement of approx 1000 sq ft. I quoted n interviewd 5 different companies before choosing Ruben's. The whole crew was punctual, courteous, and cleaned up the yard the driveway etc beyond my expectations . Ruben kept in constant touch on inspections etc. Obviously I would not hesitate to recommend him and certainly will be my first call if my main roof ever needs work/replacement.

Royal Roofing recently completed a repair on our house. They are friendly, professional and do high quality work. They gave me an estimate within 24 hours of contacting them. The price was fair for the work that need to be completed. They came at the scheduled time, which was only 2 days later and completed the work efficiently. I recommend their services.

We recently bought an older home in Eagle Ridge and were aware that the roof was at the end of life. What we didn't know was a certain insurance company would be eager to accept our premium for closing and then within 60 days send us the dreaded "drop dead letter". Now, we had 2 weeks to find a contractor, get a permit and have our roof replaced or get cancelled. We got six estimates total, some were a result of Thumbtack replies and others we called after internet research. Some, couldn't meet our deadline, others seemed like sharks chasing a fish, and a couple came in very close to the same price. One very large Fort Myers contractor's estimate was not in the same world. Ruben responded through Thumbtack quickly. We talked on the phone and he made an appointment to talk to us at our house. Even though he was the first contractor we talked to in depth he right away gave us the feeling that he was going to get the job even if later estimates were a bit lower. He went into great detail about the permitting process, inspections and how he runs his crews. This was important information because he "controls his own crews" and can adapt to changing weather etc. Some contractors "sub" the work to others then control of the work flow is a problem. Throughout the job, Ruben was in touch either in person or by phone about scheduling, who would be on the job, what they were to accomplish that day and what would be next. When he is at other sites, his crew emails pictures to Ruben so that he can monitor the progress, approve previously discussed repairs and then sends those pictures to the homeowner with a follow up call. Ruben is a very smart and likable guy, gave us a very reasonable and competitive estimate, did exactly what we discussed and kept us informed all the way. And, OMG he actually answers his phone and responds to texts. Don't make the mistake of taking the lowest estimate without giving Ruben a fair shot. I would highly recommend Ruben and Gibisa Construction aka Pro Edge Roofing for your roofing needs.

Rubin explained the process and products very well. His honesty was very refreshing and the price was competitive. His crew was on-time and hustled from start to finish. We had a big rain shower in the afternoon before they finished the underlayment but not a drop of water got in! Shingles came in earlier than expected and the crew returned to shingle the entire house in a day and a half. Less than a week, start to finish. When they were gone, there was no trash or nails left behind and the roof looked great! A hard-working professional team.
