Cliff has the perfect demeanor for being a dog training specialist....both calm and assertive (with pets and their owners haha). When we first met Cliff in 2009 we had a newly adopted 8 week old puppy with a lot of negative puppy behaviors. So many skittish, destructive and biting behaviors though that we were advised by two other trainers and a couple of family members to "give her back" to the pound and that she would be a potentially dangerous family dog to keep around and "unpredictable" around young children. Cliff provided puppy training to us over the course of several months and helped shape Maya into a more mellow young dog that year. After we had our son, Cliff returned to help make sure the transition went smoothly, that our dog Maya would know her place and be safe around the new baby, including practicing walking Maya next to the stroller and wagon and anything that could potentially make Maya react negatively. Cliff was fantastic and Maya has been an awesome family dog these past 7 years. Great on long car trips, mellow and tolerant of kid grabs on ears and tails, never growls or snaps when our 6 year old son or other small children would jump around her or touch her treats or food. We are so grateful that Cliff saved her from the pound round 1. Then after moving away to the D.C. area, and visiting our parents back in South Florida, Maya had a negative experience at a dog boarding facility in Palm Beach Gardens. She had been attacked (unprovoked at her last stay at a Dog boarding facility in Virginia requiring stitches, etc.) and we didn't realize that she had probably also been traumatized by this event and her next experience at a dog daycare might not be as enjoyable for her. She got into an altercation with another dog and one of the daycare handlers and was kicked out of the facility never allowed to return. I was told by the trainer there that it is "sad when a good dog goes bad". I was devastated!! Cliff came to the rescue again. He offered to immediately pick her up from me and board her for a few days while I visited with my parents and to train her while boarding and see if he could correct some of those nervous and potentially aggressive behaviors. He helped her work through some of those issues and took her into the community interacting with other people and dogs and she returned to us quite happy and like herself again. We are so grateful to have found Cliff 7 1/2 years ago and because of him we have the best, most gentle family dog we could imagine. SO glad he saw the potential in Maya and helped us through those negative behaviors!!

Franco is an absolute pleasure to work with. He is amazing with my pit mix. His training is not only with the dog but with the owners as well. His knowledge is second to none and there were immediate results after the first lesson. After week 2 we have seen DRASTIC positive results. I recommend Franco to any and everyone who has any time of behavioral or psychological issues with their dog. He is the guy to fix the problems.

I had an incredible experience and would highly recommend this Canine Coach to anyone who is looking to learn the ins and outs of training your puppy/dog, or how to help strengthen the bond between your pet and yourself. I will definitely be coming back once it is time to teach my puppy how to leash train and he's finished his last round of vaccinations, and I'm more than satisfied with the empathy I felt from my Canine Coach and his understanding of the overall relationship I wanted to develop with my pup! I have nothing but praise! Just look how happy my puppy was after his first session! =] He wen't straight for his toy and not straight for my couch!

I have a blue Weimaraner who weighed 65 lbs by 1 year old. She had trouble with impulse control and constantly pulled when walking her. Every person and dog we encountered was her new BFF! I am petite and had trouble keeping her from jumping on passers by and from being dragged down the street. Brianna walked my dog and taught me techniques and gave me the tools to train my large puppy. It took a while to train my willful and high energy dog but I can now safely walk my full grown Weim, confident that we will enjoy our walk. Brianna is wonderful with animals, has a gift for working with dogs and training both the dog’s behavior and people on how to train their dog. Brianna is caring, knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. in my opinion, her fees are very affordable. She has also helped me through my dog’s skin rash issues by recommending skin remedies which have been helpful as I do not like giving her antibiotics. I cannot say enough good things about Brianna and highly recommend her. She has been my Dog Whisperer for the past 2 years!

I highly recommend working with Megan. Her compassion for dogs and upbeat nature made the training itself engaging and enjoyable for my one year old labradoodle! She always gave 110% to me and my dog, she is reliable, organized and most of all knowledgeable in the training and behavior of dogs.

I do wanna take the time to write this review! I highly appreciated Paola, my dog/daughter Channel is so happy after her walks with you and I personally appreciate one of the few things you don't find in a business owner and it's professionalism. You are always on time, go the extra mile if I need you without notice. I highly recommended Paola and channel too.

Lisa was very impressive not only by her effective training strategies, but also in her efficiency. My 3yr old dog learned several skills (and maintained them!) in just one session with all positive reinforcement techniques. We had tried a cheaper group dog training from a big company before for 6 weeks and didn't get close to the same results we got working with Lisa (plus, it was far less stressful for my dog!) Absolutely would recommend her services!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
