As first time homeowners, and never experiencing household trouble shooting before, we had no clue how to operate the disposal when it got stuck due to broken glass. Carl came right in, knew what he was doing and got the job done in under 10 minutes! He was very informative and taught my husband how to tackle this if it happened again. He was nice and we will hire him again if something else comes up.

Today I had repair done to my clothing rack on the left side of my closet. This repair was done with the up most professionalism. He even added reinforcement to ensure it does not fall again. Also he installed a lighting fixture in the same closet. I was extremely happy with the work done today. I will definitely have Brian return to complete other household task for me. He came prepared for the worst. Also he very pleasant.

Lori is very personable and eager to please. She listened to all of my needs and proceeded to clean until she was done. We have a large, busy household. Lori worked around us and was never in our way. We will continue having Lori work with us.

I reached out to Miguel for an estimate to screen in my porch. He was the first person to respond in about 5 minutes with a very fair estimate. After a few messages back and forth, Miguel came out the same day (Father's day) and did the instillation. He did a fantastic job and communicated every step of the way. Even after he finished I sprung another project on him and he was ready, willing and flexible to accommodate my request. I would recommend Miguel for your household project any day! Thanks again Miguel!

John is highly professional and delivered outstanding work quality. I had two bathrooms in dire need of caulking and minor repairs. John had to remove my old and awful caulking job before he could start his great work! He took care of mold, repaired other broken fixtures and gave advice on how to properly maintain. I will certainly call John again for other household repairs. Thanks again John for the pleasant interaction and FANTASTIC service!!! Robin

Lou did an excellent job on my repairs. He responded with any questions I had immediately. He went out of his way to save me money, not trying to upsell me or charge for costly replacements that weren't necessary. His work was great, he cleaned everything up and I could not be happier. He did drywall repair, replaced a garbage disposal and faucet, and fixed a light. He even rescued two lizards from my house from facing certain doom with the dog - he's a friend to nature! I will definitely call Cordero Services in the future for help with household repairs.

It is true when they say "You get what you pay for!" Busy Bee was not the least expensive quote I received (It was a close third.) but the communication, personal touches, and end result has left me misty eyed, I was so pleased!! There is a sense of personal shame and vulnerability when the condition of your home exceeds your ability to keep up with. Both Sheila and James never let me feel anything but relieved - someone was there to help and lift me back up, lend a helping hand and restore my sanity. I LOVE my house once again, have a sense of peace & no longer cringe when I walk in the door. I have my pride and dignity back, thanks to the crew that eliminated a years worth of dust and dirt that health conditions limited me to take care of myself. They have recommended a monthly visit to maintain it - other companies insisted on more frequent and twice the cost. If you are looking for someone less expensive, you will find them elsewhere. What you won't find is the quality. My dogs even enjoyed the company - they were well received by the crew and they were given lots of love and attention without being a distraction. Busy Bee will be part of my household for as long as I can afford to keep them employed. The respect and understanding that I received can not be compared to any other company I interviewed. The end result left me speechless. I don't have one negative comment to share with anyone who might be interested in their services.

We are a couple in our early 50's and have retired early. We found ourselves in need of some help while we juggled an illness, our new house, unpacking boxes, taking care of a 2-year old Yorkie and yes a 10-week old Yorkie....yes call us crazy. We have never had someone help with housecleaning before, so we weren't exactly sure what to look for. We've heard good things about Thumbtack, so we started there. The minute we viewed Alice's profile, we knew she was exactly what we needed...someone to organize our daily routine and make life a little more enjoyable. Each day Alice arrived she was full of energy and anxiously greeted our dogs. Then she drove full-force into her tasks for the day. Alice has such a strong work ethic and we found it difficult to get her to take even a short break. She quickly found what was needed in our new household and put her skills and passion to work. She explained to us she thoroughly enjoys organizing kitchens and WOW was I impressed after just the first day. Alice has been with us for several weeks and the match couldn't have been more perfect. Whether you are in need of some organization, light house cleaning, deep cleaning or a combination...Alice is for you.

Great job replacing the old circuit breaker in my home. The job was finished in just in a few hours. I was expecting to be without power for an entire day. The electrician that performed the job was courteous, fast, and efficient. The owner of the company even stopped in to make sure everything was going well. I will definitely use them again for household jobs, and would highly recommend Orlando Handyman Services to anyone that needs handyman services.

Working with Sally has been a really great experience. She cleans the house thoroughly and makes sure every corner of the house is clean. She also takes care as to which cleaning supplies are appropriate when there are kids especially infants around the household. Thanks a lot Sally for the awesome work.

Dean and his hard-working crew proved to be nothing short of a Godsend for my family this past weekend, coordinating a "dual household" move with speed and impeccable attention-to-detail. They even broke-down the legs, wrapped, and carefully crated our antique baby grand as if it were their own! That alone saved me upwards of $3-400! Thanks for your help & true professionalism...and especially grateful for the peace-of-mind you instilled.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor.
