Really nice guy!!!! I called him Saturday evening, and he came the very next day Sunday evening. I will be hiring him for more jobs in the future. He knew exactly where the leak was, and fixed it right away. He even had the plumbing material, which was a plus!!!!

We needed a variety of repairs done around the house and Stew from R&S did a professional job and we couldn't be happier! Not only did he repair the doors and drywall as we requested, but he completed a plumbing job and and the many other problems that popped up. The prices are reasonable and the work is quality!

I needed a new hot water heater and my "go-to" local plumber could not get me scheduled right away and they wanted to charge me DOUBLE the price. I was told that my particular hot water heater was more complicated to install since it is gas & uses a power vent. I checked another local plumber that I had used in the past and their quote was even higher. So I used Thumbtack and found Greg at Lamanna Plumbing. He replied within 2 minutes of my posting, his price quote was totally reasonable and even the distance from his company location to my home (just at the 30 mile radius), was not an issue. My local plumbers could not even promise a speedy install date and they did not consider having no hot water a true priority. Greg was speedy, punctual and affordable. I lucked out by finding his company.

Spoke to Andre to explain details of my project and he was very attentive and accommodating. He arrived a few minutes early and did a great job on everything asked of him. He had a wonderful attitude and went out of his way to make sure I was 100% happy with how everything turned out. Andre quoted a fair price, tested everything and didn't leave until it was the way I wanted it. He was a pleasure to work with ... I will use him again in the future for all my plumbing needs and not hesitate to refer him to others.

Working with Joe was a very pleasant and professional experience. He responded right away to help fix a broken drain and ended up helping with a couple other plumbing issues. He even had the spare parts we needed in his car. I’m happy that I’ve found someone that we can rely on for our plumbing needs. Thanks Joe!

This guy is extremely professional, he can do everything (including plumbing and electrical work). I love it when one person can do it all, no matter the prices it’s always cheaper than having to bring 3 different guys to do the same job this guy can do. On top of that, he’s super friendly. I definitely will be calling him and recommend to my friends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
