He's one of the best tutors I ever had I was astonish on how I improve my reading scores he gave me a lot of tips to pass this ACT. He's a very smart man and his son is too. He would push you hard to be the best in a good way which you would need to pass or even score high on the ACT

Eric is great. I’m not a beginner and I have had a slew of tutors over the years. Eric’s the best. His command of his native language is complete. He has a real knowledge of English that enables him to appreciate the complexity of learning a new language. He is also very flexible. He has to be to contend with the demands I’ve placed upon him. Thumbs up!

I hired Andres to prepare me for the math section of the SAT. He was very competent in his ability to work through the problems on the practice test and, more importantly, explain the process to me. I am a public school teacher myself, so I know good teaching when I see it. Andres is very good at what he does.

We needed to find an SAT tutor for my daughter right away. I like the fact that Arbor allows you to switch tutors if you want to. Due to scheduling problem on our part, we ended up needing to switch to a different tutor. I simply sent an email and we immediately were given another tutor that fit into my daughter's new schedule.

Sadid first came to my house for a no fee chat with myself and my son to discuss what I had in mind for my son. I explained to Sadid what my expectations were for the short and long term and he then proceeded with tutoring my son for the first session. My son was very happy with Sadid and we agreed on tutoring twice a week. So far I am very happy with the results and Sadid did meet my expectations. I would definitely recommend Sadid. Dr. Dubler is a skilled tutor that knows that taking the SAT is similar to activities like sports, dance and theater; there are many factors that influence someone’s performance. Dr. Dubler not only shares his passion for setting students up for PSAT and SAT test taking; but he provides applicable hints for students to think about in advance, such as: what to eat the week before the test, and many other tricks to the trade of successful test taking. He will arrive promptly and professionally and will assign homework in between his sessions and encourages his students to do what they can do, with the reality they have their normal extracurricular activities and homework to attend to. His longevity in this field speaks for his abilities to be committed to his passion for SAT tutoring. Dr. Dubler is very experienced and highly educated. He is an excellent match for students who do not mind being asked to explain their train of thought, as his expectation is a high level of interaction. This is one way he reinforces what he is teaching. He is also full on fun magic tricks along the way, which will certainly keep things as he likes them “entertaining.”

From the very beginning, John was very professional and had a sincere concern for what I needed. He was genuine, and very much involved during the tutoring sessions. Considering my lack of understanding of the material simply because I hate physics; he however, took his time to make it very informal enough to keep me engaged. I expressed my concerns & he was on it and was very eager to make sure I understood the materials. Throughout the sessions, he could see where I was checking out mentally but he continued to encourage me along the way & even found a few ways to make me laugh so that I could refocus. I would recommend John to anyone who is in need of a tutor who is patient and actually cares about the client understanding and passing physics. You will get more than what you paid for. He seems very down to earth so far. He has a pure desire to help succeed. I am actually beginning to understand a lot more than I knew before and that is all a great big thanks to Mr. John Way. Thanks John!

Mme Chevalier is a fantastic French tutor. She has my children totally engaged when teaching them and she makes the lessons fun. I have been quizzing my girls (ages 5 and 8) on certain phrases and vocabulary, and I am absolutely amazed with how much they know after working with Mme Chevalier for under a year. The other things that impresses me about Mme Chevalier is that she provides a thorough review of what the children learned in their lesson, where and how they can review between lessons and what they will be doing in the upcoming weeks. I am so happy I found Mme Chevalier for my girls and I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn French.

Melinda has been my writing tutor for two years now after jumping around from tutor to tutor my entire eight years in college. Melinda has made me a better writer in all aspects. I am a history major, and am constantly writing research papers. Knowing I have Melinda to guide me and help edit, drastically decreases my anxiety when writing. She is exceptional at making herself available when the going gets extra tough. Overall Melinda is the best writing tutor I've ever had.

I had not taken a French class in nearly ten years, however, in order to further my degree French II was required. I knew I needed a French tutor right away and utilized Thumbtack's service to obtain information on tutors located in my area. Several tutors contacted me, but David's background and previous stellar reviews caught my eye. We discussed briefly what would be expected from him with regards to the course material as well as my lack of knowledge on the fundamentals. My French was rusty to say the least and I would need intense tutoring sessions to refresh my memory on a subject that I hadn't taken since my first year of college many years prior. David was great! He was professional and knowledgeable. We started at the basics and he walked me through each rule applicable to the French language. His explanation on basic concepts was extremely helpful, as he explained them in a way that helped me better understand sentence structure, gender agreements, passé composé, infinitives, regular/irregular verbs, time, numbers, basic vocabulary words, etc. He exhibited a great deal of patience with my lack of understanding and made sure I understood the material before moving on to the next lesson. David worked around my busy school and full-time work schedule and even traveled quite a bit of distance to meet me. My current grade in the class is a 95. There is no doubt in my mind, that had I not employed David's services, I may not have been able to pass the class. Not only did I pass, but I received an A! Nothing short of a miracle! I would recommend his services to anyone in need of French help, whether it be early french students or those that are pursing a more difficult French curriculum. I am truly grateful for David and his wealth of knowledge. His teaching style and applied techniques truly made a difference for me.

Katrin is very accommodating and always patient and willing to help. She works with you at your pace and at your level. Sometimes the tutor is only as good as the pupil allows him/her to be. To that extent I am fully satisfied with the guidance afforded by Katrin.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
