Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

I am glad to say that I was lucky to find Gold Coast Roofing on this website. After struggling with several companies just to get a price quote for the roof repairs after hurricane Irma, I found them and they came to my house the very same day I contacted them and then in 2 days my roof was all repaired. Incredible service, fair price, very dependable and clean. I will recommend this company to anybody who needs a roof repair. They also do all kinds of concrete and pavers.

This was the perfect hire for our roof repair after Hurricane Irma. He was responsive and punctual which in my opinion is the hardest thing to find in contractors in South Florida. The work was done correctly, quickly, and at a reasonable price. I highly recommend Rod Guy Roofer and will use him again in the future.

This company gave us a reasonable quote and was great at first. When I started to ask more and more questions about actual pricing based on additional costs (since quote was not all inclusive of everything) they ended up backing out. They knew I was on a tight deadline and wasted a lot of time now causing me to not have a roof replacement in time. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!

Had a roof leak in my garage. Had it fixed once years ago but it started leaking again. Rod gave me an honest price and I had gotten a few estimates. He was able to start work within 2 days. His crew was great. They finished in about 4 hrs. If I need a repair in the future I will definitely use Rod again.

Hands down the best roofing service I've ever used. Two handymen told me I needed new fascia boards on my roof due to rot. I called Rod to let him know about some fascia board that needed repair. He showed up in less than an hour and was able to diagnose a much bigger problem that he was able to repair and ultimately saved me a ton of money in the long run. He fixed the fascia board, underlayment and sealed the area which could have resulted in major damage if Rod didn't find the problem. Rod and his guys showed up the next day, repaired the damage, painted the fascia boards and cleaned up the site. He's an honest tradesman who will fix the problem and not try to sell you services you don't need. Prices were fair and reasonable. His quality of work is excellent. I highly recommend using Rod.

I used ThumbTack after Hurricane Irma to find roofers to repair tile loss and minor leaks. Gold Coast was the only company to return my request within 24 hours and were immediately available. Within a few days I had an estimate below another reputable company and work was completed another 2 days later. As work was done, I was sent pictures of their progress on my cell phone so I have a permanent record of the work done. They even repaired a leak that was supposedly repaired when we bought the house 2 years ago. That other company told me they were not available in my area when contacted! My father was a roofing waterproofing specialist so based on their pictures I know they did a quality job. I highly recommend them for all of the reasons above and would call them immediately after future hurricanes. Thank you Gold Coast!
