Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why itโ€™s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies youโ€™re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what youโ€™re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often wonโ€™t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roofโ€™s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, hereโ€™s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

Itโ€™s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesnโ€™t mean that you shouldnโ€™t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

Whatโ€™s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, itโ€™s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure youโ€™re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

I called several other roofers and no one was interested in a smaller job. A+ roofing replied back within minutes and had my estimate and repairs done within a few hours.

Chris came out to fix our roof. Another company had came out the previous day and way overpriced us. I called Chris next. I told him how many shingles I thought we were missing, and he quoted a price within our budget. He was able to schedule us the very next day. When he arrived, he said I was a little under how many shingles I thought were missing, but he would keep the price he quoted me. He brought plenty of materials and had me pick out a color that matched our roof color. In 30 minutes, he was finished, and our roof looked good as new.

I recently had about 5 quotes on my roof replacement and what a WIDE variety of prices i was provided.. while G&A was not the least expensive quote i received they were the ONLY company who responded immediately to my questions, sending me product information, siting examples of their work, returning phone calls with questions... GREAT communication!!! I would HIGHLY advise anyone considering getting work done on their roof keep something in mind, price is not the most important factor... having a highly recommended and incredibly professional team work on your home repair is worth it... G&A was able to finish my entire roof from removal, cleaning, to installation in ONE DAY!! and at no loss of quality .. i was there the whole time taking pictures and watching them move... as a computer software analyst with a focus on automation.. it was amazing watching how efficiently the team moved together.. truly incredible... I plan to do some investing in a few more homes this year, Its nice to know who will be doing the roofing on those properties before i even buy them. Remember : its NOT about the lowest price.. its about getting the MOST for your dollar!! Call Andrew!

We had a roof leak, Chris was at our house the next day, identified the leak and spotted a skylight issue. He gave us a reasonable quote and we scheduled the job. It was completed in a timely manner and other than a little leak around a skylight everything was great. He came the next morning to repair the leak in skylight; and everything has been great since then, and weโ€™ve had tons of rain! Overall very pleased and would use Chris again!

The majority of the roof replacement went well; however, there were a number of areas that could have been improved. The most serious issue was and intoxicated worker showed up to work on the first day and almost immediately fell off a ladder. Fortunately he only received minor cuts and bruises and was not brought back to the work site again. Mr. Goodman saved us some significant cost by having the capability to bend his own flashing and trim. This was somewhat frustrating at times as a number of pieces of trim were damaged in either transit or during installation of which some we requested to be replaced. Additionally the lengths were restricted which in some areas do not look as well as a seamless install would. Other issues dealt with the workers not taking the proper time and care to provide a professional installation. A number of shortcuts were taken, while although functional, could have been done better and given more of a professional look. One other item I should note is that a window was broken during the job. The workers claimed they did not break even though it was obvious they did. We eventually settled by getting credit and taking care of ourselves. Most frustrating was it took over two weeks to resolve. In summary, the job was average and probably matched the bid price.
