Andy installed laminate floors as well as vinyl tile. He and Matt showed up promptly and performed the work very professionally. I'll also hire him to pressure wash and prep my house for painting. I highly recommend Andy.

Having just bought a home in Micco I looked on Craigslist and found Martin's posting. He quickly provided a quote that seemed fair and agreed to begin work within a short time. I asked for an assortment of repairs. Martin hung cabinets and tiled a backsplash, rewired several areas and installed lighting, removed floor tiles and laid new ones. All his work was done when he said it would be done and to my specifications. Martin helped me chose correct materials at the store( we went together) and he also volunteered to take old stuff to the dump. There were a few things that needed to be done that he was honest enough to say that he would prefer to refer someone else with more expertise. Honest and proficient workers are a refreshing combination!!!! the people he knew were much like him...honest, good workers. I have called Martin on the phone since the completion of the work for advice and he continues to be helpful and professional. He stands by his work and will do a great job for you, too.

I needed the services of a professional highly skilled laminate floor installer with finish carpenter skills to complete my stairs. It was important to my wife and I to have our first riser and tread leading up from the first floor to have a rounded look instead of boxed (squared off). I listed my requirements for the stair job on Thumb Tack and Jeff from Precision Wood Floors responded within 15min. I included pictures of the project. Jeff reviewed the pictures, confirmed what I was looking for and explained my options. An appointment was made for the same day. Jeff of Precision Wood Floors arrived an hour before the scheduled appointment and went to work. The finish work was flawless, perfect mitre cuts and the material was used judiciously with very little waste. To sum up my experience with Precision Wood Floors I can say that a true finish carpenter arrived and completed my project. This was one of my best experiences having a home project done.

Jimmy is the true handyman. He was been working for me for about 2 weeks. So far he as repaired dry wall, painted, put down hard wood floors, built a wall, hanged blinds, re grouted shower tile and hanged doors. He was been very reliable and a hard worker. You won't find him taking smoke breaks or talking your ear off. He comes and gets to work. His prices are very fair and I highly recommend hiring Jimmy for all your needs.

I was told by several people my floor couldn’t be repaired. Floor is wood laminate that was separated due to flooding. Not only were they able to repair it, it looks better than new. Mike and John were so knowledgeable. I will recommend them highly. I will use them again! Pictures to follow of what it now looks like.

Brandon did a great job with a new floor installation in our master bedroom. His communication about the size of the job and different options for completing the work showed that he knew what he was doing. It was amazing how fast everything came together. We are already planing on the next room for him to work on.

Robert stained and polyurethane my front door, painted my garage and lania floors, installed shelves in my garage and bedroom closet, and painted every room in my home. He also gave me excellent suggestions to aid me with my color scheme. Robert is a professional, he is punctual, he is meticulous, and was always working during his time in my home. My neighbors are in awe of his work and are already hiring him for painting in their homes.

Mr Martinez did excellent work for us. In fact, we added a couple of additional projects for him we were so pleased with his work. One project was floor tiles that curved around a carpeted area which he cut beautifully. He listens to what you want and makes it happen. We will definitely be contacting him again for future projects.

I'm currently 8 months pregnant and wanted to get established with a cleaning service before the baby arrives. I love that there were 3 ladies cleaning so it didn't take too long as it can tend to with only 1 person on the job. I have mostly hardwood floors and loved that they had the right type of vacuum cleaner for the job. It seems like a lot of cleaners only have a standard vacuum cleaner which just blows the dirt around on hardwood. They even took all the cushions off my sofa and vacuumed the entire thing. Overall they were just super professional and did a fantastic job. My house was spotless when they left. I will continue using Ericarla and her team bi-weekly.

Derek went above and beyond the normal sales presentation. He truly listened to my needs and understood my budget. His product knowledge and observation of my enviornment saved me from making a huge mistake. He knew that my floor was uneven and that the hardwood I orginally wanted would not benefit me in the long run. His honesty saved me money! Unheard of! Not only was he able to provide everything I wanted for my living room but he even helped me move some of my furniture (I have a bad back) before the installers came! The other places I shopped wanted to charge me $150 to do that! Thank you for helping my living room look so gorgeous!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
