I have extensive experience in both playing and teaching. I also have a knack for quickly developing rapport with students, which helps them become more engaged in the learning process. For students with a bit of experience, I have very effective methods for explaining the mysteries of music. I really like working with someone who's been frustrated for a long time, and seeing understanding take hold on their faces. That's the moment that inspires them to learn even more...

  • Sound Learning Piano

    (10 reviews)

SOUND LEARNING PIANO STUDIO serves DeKalb County including but not limited to Stone Mountain, Lithonia and Ellenwood, GA. We recognize and respect the uniqueness of each child. We, also, recognize that music study plays a critical part in the development of each child socially, academically, and developmentally. Sound Learning's primary mission is to build on each child's natural love for music and further foster a love of learning through piano education. Our curriculum skillfully weaves artistic, practical, and technical disciplines into lessons. Students learn to follow their curiosity, to think creatively, and to work both independently and cooperatively with others. I enjoy the challenge of meeting each student where they are and helping them to overcome hurdles to reach their pianistic goals. In other words, I structure my teaching to each individual student.

Thumbtack Spotlight

Sherry Ellis Books and Music

(5 reviews)

What do you love about your job?

I love seeing the difference music makes in the lives of the students I teach. As they learn, they gain confidence and get in touch with their creative sides. It is so rewarding to see them enjoy music as much as I do. I also think it's a lot of fun to work with children. They have such interesting ways of looking at the world. Over the years, I've worked with a lot of students. Each person is different. It's always fun for me to figure out creative ways to help a student learn.

What or who inspired you to start your own business?

I didn't start as a teacher. I was a performer. When a friend asked if I would be interested in giving her daughter violin lessons, I decided to give it a try. It was then that I realized how much I enjoyed working with a student and passing my knowledge on to another person. That was over 20 years ago. I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I feel so lucky to be able to do something I truly enjoy.
