Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Should I buy moving insurance?

Your homeowners or renters insurance policy may or may not protect your belongings if they get lost or damaged during a move. If you’re moving valuable items, or if you’re moving a great distance, it could be a good idea to invest in moving insurance.

Interstate movers are required to offer you full value protection and released value protection to help reimburse you in case of damage or loss. If you’re moving within your state, check with your state’s consumer affairs agency to see if your state has rules and requirements regarding moving insurance and valuation coverage.

How much do you tip movers?

It’s recommended that you tip your movers individually around $4 to $5 per hour. For example, if a team of four movers spends a half-day (four hours) on your move, tip each mover $20. Or, some people tip 5% to 10% of their total bill for small moves and 15% to 20% for larger moves.

If you’re moving across state lines, you may hire different crews to load and unload your goods. In that case, divide the tips between both crews. It’s also a good rule of thumb to add a bit extra for tipping movers if you have special circumstances that have made the move harder, like a spiral staircase or an exceptionally heavy sofa.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Contacted the company due to a last minute moving job - they were incredibly helpful, and contacted me immediately (on a Saturday night, no less). Within an hour, I was set up for a 9am move the next day. The two movers were incredibly polite, friendly and conscientious during the whole move -- could not have asked for a better team and would highly recommend Next Door Relocators!!!!

Elite Movers ATL helped up move a couple of weeks ago and the provided an excellent service. We moved a lot a used many moving companies, had good and bad experiences, but Elite Movers has been hands-down the best!! Darel was very responsive and fast, and so was Sarah at the office. We exchanged several emails back and forth and she was very nice and helpful. They showed up on time and worked fast and well. They protected every piece of furniture very well. I definitely recommend them for moving needs!! Best!!

I think dealing with Ronnie was the best transaction I have ever had in any business dealing. He was first class in every aspect of our move. I couldn't recommend Ronnie Aikens moving enough. His rate is unbelievably cheap considering everything that his company provides.

Best moving experience ever! What a pleasant company to deal with. Easy booking. They showed up early, worked their tails off, and finished early ( thereby saving me $). No issues. A hassle free move. I can't recommend them enough. If I could give them 6 stars, I would

Over all this company was great. One of the movers they sent was young and very immature, arguing with the others and actually asked for a tip but other than that they worked fast, and didn't mess up in the houses. I'd definitely recommend.

Scott was very knowledgeable. He provided an accurate, over-the-phone estimate that was much lower than other brand name moving companies that provided in-home estimates. The crew was prompt, professional and worked hard to make the experience as easy as possible. I do want to add a friendly note of advice for others based on our experience. We were well-prepared for our in-town move. We rented a truck and moved most of our boxes and light pieces of furniture the week before our "official move." I believe that eliminated any surprises for the crew that could have easily increased length and price of the move.

You can count on an awesome experience with this company. This was my second move with them. The first, I had to leave as they were unloading. I told them to put stuff wherever, thinking I would move it when I returned. They set up my place so perfectly I never needed to change a thing. This move was into a storage unit, and the crew maximized the space beautifully. Had more room than I planned for! True professionals!!!

From beginning to end Fulton, Reinke, Jake, and Will hustled hard. They provided great customer service from the quote to completion. They helped us move an efficient manner and they were so kind. Nothing was damaged and everything was handled with care. They helped my sister moved and she loved them so much she referred me and I am so glad she did!! These guys are the movers you want helping you. They helped us move from a 4 bedroom/2.5 bathroom with living room and dining room and kitchen to the another house with the same type of set up with more space. They great workers, friendly gentlemen, and they went above and beyond. I highly recommend them!! Thanks again Falcon Moving Company.

I wish I could give 404movers five stars - I really do. I only deducted a star for the lack of communication with the home office/business side of the company. I tried to contact Jeff (the associate who sent me the quote for my move) multiple times after my initial booking regarding my furniture and updated itineraries through Thumbtack, email, text, AND phone call for the two weeks leading up to my move. All I wanted was confirmation that the information was received (especially the itinerary change, as I needed to add a storage unit stop). When I finally got in touch with Jeff and Mitch, I was told that they've been busy but did receive the information - a day before my move. I understand getting slammed during peak seasons (I manage a business as well - a primary care clinic), but even a simple "received" text would have sufficed! Having said all that, the move went exceptionally well - Kevin and Gabe were the movers assigned to my project. From supervisor Kevin's initial "en route to your location" call to the final walk through of the empty truck, I did not have to worry about a thing. Kevin was very clear in explaining all the paperwork to me, breaking down the hourly rate and travel fee before and after the move. I moved out of my family's house in Alpharetta and into an apartment in Marietta with my fiancé and they were very respectful and conscious of the furniture in the house that were NOT to be moved. They were very thorough and efficient, managing their time very wisely. I've been told horror stories of various moving company scams turning a 3 hour move into a 6+ hour move to milk you for more money, but this was NOT the case. Kevin and Gabe loaded and unloaded all my furniture within 3 hours, as quoted. I don't see myself moving again for a few more years, but if the movers at 404movers continue this high quality of work, I would absolutely hire them again (even with the communication issues of the home office).

Hired Bears to move a family member into their own apartment. The guys were very responsive and they kept me informed when they were held up for just a couple minutes because of traffic. They worked very quickly - but carefully - and wrapped up our move in under two hours. We are very pleased with their service AND they were much more cost effective than any of the other companies we got pricing from. Another very satisfied customer!

The individuals that showed up worked very hard to get things moved. However they were 1 hour and a half late. I kept getting the run around on arrival time. Then my end of the job cost was inaccurate. My advice would be to shop around before choosing this company.

The one star to me represents negative 100 stars. 2 words describe this company - Bait and Switch. I was just contacted by a lady from this company about how my move went. Overall experience was that I felt scammed. Originally "Scott L***s" who stated he was the owner quoted me a flat rate of $636.00 and also mentioned he would wave the trip fee "though its not something they normally do." - More on Scott later. So days before the move I contacted them by phone and on thumbtack and so far no confirmation of the move on the date, as I booked weeks prior. No return messages, nothing. Especially via here on Thumbtack. So on the Move day, the movers are a no show at 9am which was the set schedule. I call Scott to find out what is going on and advise him the drivers are not here yet. His first response was "Well the move is charged when they show up." Im thinking to myself what the heck does this have to do with the price of sliced bread in China. Then he goes on to say they are at a gas station filling up the truck and will be there in a few minutes. 45 minutes go by and still nothing. I call Scott again, no answer. Then the driver of the truck calls me and tells me he hasn't left yet. That the ETA is another 48 minutes - his words; "38 minutes on the map + 10 minutes for filling up the gas" I said weren't you just at the gas station 45 min ago...he said "i dont know why they told you that, we haven't left yet, we needed to load the truck prep, etc.." At this point I am stressed and frustrated because I have utilities, appliances showing up at my new house and needed to be there as well. So after scrambling to get coverage in the last minute, they finally show up. The load went fine, but they were working slow as molasses. Instead of bringing in 3 or 4 light boxes stacked, they would do one at a time. Then have some discussion outside. After the truck was loaded, I waited another 35 min for them to actually get driving. (Obviously they are milking the job). Scott (on the phone) mentioned weeks ago during booking that "Other moving companies wont look out for your hardwood floors... we lay down protective material (Ram board or something) to prevent scratches. I am thinking fantastic, and felt confident in selecting this moving company. So when the drivers show up, the unloading went ok into the basement as the entry was outside direct. When entering the house, they didn't lay anything on the floor. I said excuse me but can you please put something on the floor to prevent potential damage. They looked at each other puzzled. Then one of them asked if they can tear apart a big box I had from a new piece of furniture. I said absolutely, feel free. (So much for Scotts bs statement(s).) I have to pause and say the movers themselves were stellar in personality, professionalism and were very friendly. Not something you normally see in the moving industry. Due to their personalities I overlooked the scratches on the wall they caused. Hours later the move is completed and what was originally quoted at $636.00 is now suddenly $865.00. I was adamant on speaking to the owner / Scott (well today I found out he wasn't the owner though he claimed to be.) I asked about the bait and switch, and he was pretty much sticking to some hidden charges that weren't mentioned before. What set off this experience as the worst was the final blackmail of "you're paying the $865.00 or the Police will show up" - At this point we had a heated exchange, and he tells me he was a former prosecutor as if that had some authority on scamming me in the move. After calming down, I tipped the drivers, and paid the blackmailed amount. In the end they scammed me with the bait and switch "New York gangster move" but this honest, negative review will be shared here, google reviews, bbb, and a few others." I was going to initiate a charge-back, but after talking to their rep today, I felt sorry for this company, and Scott and his failed 3rd rate prosecutor career so I figured he can use the scammed money towards his rent. I do not recommend using this company. They butter you up throughout the move for a 5 star review when the experience is -100 stars. You're more than welcome to contact me and I will tell you what their employees are even saying and suggesting where to go instead of this company. So if you are considering Next Door Movers, look next door for alternative better experiences. Don't be fooled by the 5 star reviews on this site...its fishy. I am sure I am not alone. Look at other review sites as well and you'll see similar experiences to mine. But if you do want to hire a moving company that shows up hours late, threatens you with prior prosecutor career experience, quote you one thing, bill you another, scratch up your walls, and hold you hostage - Next door re-locators is the way to go!

I've waited a while to write this review because I needed to calm down after the experience I had with them. This was absolutely the worst customer experience I have ever had. They will know exactly who this is because of how bad it was. After scheduling to move on a Saturday with "movers booked from 3-5" I assumed they would show up at 3. 2:50 rolls around and I'm calling the number.. no answer. I finally hear back around 4 I believe and they say that 3-5 was a window the drivers had to show up. So I'm supposed to wait for 2 hours for movers to show up? They never did. I got a call after 5 (meanwhile I'm calling the number and no one is answering) and they were over an hour away. We had to reschedule. They gave me a discount. I was furious. The next day rolls around and the movers were scheduled from 2-4. This time I lowered my expectations and assumed they would show up at 4. After a day of chasing this company on the phone and me in tears because this was the only weekend I was able to move - they finally showed up at 7PM. I was done moving at 10PM on a Sunday. Did they give me a bigger discount? Barely. And I had to tip the drivers because I felt bad. Looking back on this experience I'm upset that they didn't do it for free - it was a total disaster. The movers put my bed together wrong, it ended up falling apart that very night. I will never use these guys again. I've heard they are great but from my own experience.. this is awful. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!! AVOID Mitchie at all costs !! Here is what happened..This guy gave me a contract for $95 per hour after I asked him to give me his best rate. HE SIGNED THE CONTRACT...Two days back, he called me and said he made a MISTAKE in the pricing and hiked it to $129...Since my move was for this SATURDAY, I had no option but to sign..HE ALSO SIGNED IT yesterday and sent it back..I did request him to see if he can reduce the $ a little- although I knew I could do nothing if he refused. This morning, this guy called and CANCELLED the move !!!! He said he felt since I was asking for discounts, I will not be happy with the move. When I told him that he was literally hanging me out to dry cancelling this at the last minute, he could not care less..This guy Mitch looked professional, but cannot be trusted at all..DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF even wasting a phone call on him and his services; I am concerned now since he came to my house last week in the pretext of "planning" the move and took some pictures...not comfortable with that given what I am finding out about this guy... He seems like a guy with absolutely zero conscience and no concern for the customer..all he cares about is how to make an extra $ at the expense of folks who trusted him to uphold the contract he signed and make their move simpler... AVOID THE HASSLE I AM GOING THRU NOW, CALL A BETTER MOVING COMPANY..DO NOT USE 404 MOVERS IF YOU WANT PEACE OF MIND...THIS HAS BEEN A DISASTROUS EXPERIENCE...

For starters, the movers arrived 30 minutes late due to traffic, which i could completely understand. The move was quick between my old and new location BUT, in the midst of moving my items, the movers lost 2 of my suction cups that hold my glass table together as well as the screws and caps that go into my dining room table legs. A few days later they provided me with 2 suction cups that dont even match the ones that came with the table. They came back to my apartment to help me look for the dining room pieces after a few days but they were nowhere to be found as i previously told them. I advised them that i could not use my dining room table because I do not have these pieces and i have family coming in from out of town for a Christmas dinner i planned for a year now, only to be sitting here on the verge of tears that I cant even host my party and have wasted money on buying food to prepare. Someone from the company was messaging me looking for pieces which they couldn’t find in stores and offered to buy a new table and just give me the missing parts, which isnt going to help me for my issue on Christmas. There was no refund offered for the inconvenience or any apology, just an “i understand”, which clearly they don’t.

This business is a fraud and the "Sales Director" is a con artist. The "Sales Director", Scott Likens, estimated the job twice to account for the original estimate being too low. Even then came in at 50% over that estimate. This company left several thousand dollars worth of patio furniture, lawn equipment, and bicycles (all large, expensive and cumbersome items) in the garage and did not complete the job they were hired to do. At no time during the 4+ hours of packing was I alerted that there was going to be a space issue. Several requests to talk to a "General Manager" - apparently named Mike - were ignored throughout the move by Likens. When asked what the plan was for them to complete the job that they had committed to do, all they wanted was their money. Obviously they left larger items that can't fit easily into a personal vehicle in order to get more money and offered to provide a new estimate to complete the job they were already hired and paid to do. When asked if this is how they do business, Likens answered "It is today" and threatened to call the police if I didn't sign the credit card slip. I never threatened to withhold payment. I paid over $1600 to do a job that was never completed. Do not do business with this company. According to the movers, this is par for the course with any job that Likens bids.
