Gotta Have It did an event for me where I work and brought out the truck with a special limited menu for my residents. The food was fantastic and the service was GREAT. So many food trucks are super slow and you have to wait a while to eat once you order, but everything came out fresh and fast and delicious! Would recommend to ANYONE looking for a caterer or food truck who wants great service and wonderful, tasty food.

Nikki is an excellent chef - food was delicious. She was on time and was very personable! The young men she brought with her were so nice! I had asked for her to prepare extra homemade croutons for me to have the next day and though she said of course I suspect in the haste to leave she forgot them. ( By the way they were great!) The only comment I would make in using a chef versus my regular caterers is that Nikki and her team planned to leave while we were eating dessert. In doing so I would have been left to clean all those dishes ( 10 seated guests) and wine glasses myself. She said that was the way she always did things. None of my caterers have ever done that -- that is part of what you are paying for ($700+) to enjoy your evening and have no work to do ! Just being hostess is enough getting the house and flowers and table set! Nikki knew we had 50 people arriving post dinner for an after party and needed the dinner dishes all pulled and cleaned - was very disappointed that we had to discuss that at the last minute! I had hired a separate bartender for the glasses to be taken care at the post party. I expected her to not do any of those dishes. I did ask her to place trays of desserts I had prepared on the "cleaned off" dining table when they finished. ( I paid them a handsome tip for doing this) Also - I have never had a caterer use the dishwasher for my dishes - I have always found them hand washed and stacked in kitchen. Nikki's team loaded my dishwashers (2) with the hand painted china and sterling flatware. I should have explained that is not done - my mistake, I just haven't had to before. She is an EXCELLENT CHEF! Services are not as "easy" on the host and her familiarity with things like the china and silver should be discussed before hand. Be very specific about every detail on how you see the evening going - write it up so you both know. We had Sea Bass and It Was Amazing!

We had a cocktail party for 50 people. SabrIna responded promptly to my request for a quote. She worked with me to select a menu. Her pricing was very reasonable. At the time of the party the food was delicious. Our guests had a great time and enjoyed the food. Sabrina and her staff did a great job! I would definitely hire them again!

My experience was amazing. Kendra is so professional and the food was fantastic. The food is one of a kind I promise you you will not find it anywhere else. You can tell that she has a passion for food by the way her dishes taste. My ultimate favorite dish had to be the dessert which was tiramisu. I had that dessert multiple times but I never had it like that! I appreciate the great food and the great personality from Kendra. I would definitely recommend her.

Kelsey did an amazing job for my wife’s birthday party. Kelsey showed up right when she said she would, and everything ran very smoothly from there. She was interactive with our guests when they had questions and was very easy to work with. We had a charcuterie board, deviled eggs, soup, salad, and short ribs. All the food was very high quality and expertly prepared. Highly recommend having Crisp by Kelsey cook for your next dinner party!

Eton, Inc hired Marcus and his crew for a 3 day catered event. His food was incredible and he clearly spent time preparing a specialized menu for us. He catered to our exact specialized needs. The price was the same price as if we catered it at the hotel, but Marcus's quality and taste of food was so much better.

Stephanie and the team at Cabaki's did an amazing job for not only my wedding but also my wedding rehearsal dinner! The variety on her menu and the versatility she offers with her team is extraordinary. As somewhat of a foodie myself, I will say I was very nervous for any caterer to handle the food for one of the most important days of my life. However, Stephanie took away all of my concerns and provided above and beyond service with excellent communication and a quick response with any questions or concerns I may have had. Not only did my friends and family enjoy the amazing spread, they also raved about the unique dessert that we requested from Stephanie. Not everyone can make a croquembouche! Not only did she and her team create a beautiful croquembouche they also provided a tasty and delicious dessert that all of my guests talked about. I cannot thank Stephanie and her team enough for putting all of my concerns to rest and providing detail and quality that surpassed my highest expectations. If there is any event in the future that requires catering, I will be calling on Stephanie and her team at Cabaki's catering!

I held a birthday brunch for a friend in my home for 15 guests. Iyea prepared chicken and red velvet waffles, shrimp and grits, and egg fritatta. The food was delicious and there was more than enough quantity wise. Iyea stayed in touch leading up to my event and followed up afterward for feedback. I would use her again. She does not handle the presentation of the food so you will need to be prepared with your own serving dishes.

I found Daddy's Girl BBQ just searching for holiday catering companies on Google. I had an awesome experience ordering for our catered Thanksgiving Day Meal. Mrs. Darling was very personable, professional and the food was delicious! She was even able to assist me in providing last minute food items for a separate event-which was greatly appreciated and super accommodating of her amidst a busy holiday catering season. I will definitely be using her services going forward and would gladly recommend her to cater any events.

In-Joy catered a Christmas party I hosted at my home. Not only did she prepare a delicious flavorful dinner, she also served delectable hor d'ourves and desserts. The presentation was beautiful! With In-Joy catering the food is excellent, so are the prices, and A+ for the service! My experience was so awesome, I used In-Joy for other occasions as well! They are definitely my go to catering company, that I can rely on for ALL my food needs. Nothing is too big or small!

My event: dinner with 12 guests Food prepared: grilled salmon with buerre blanc sauce, grilled asparagus, and garlic mashed potatoes. Perfeclty seasoned with a medley of flavors that were balanced, salmon was moist with and witthout sauce, aspargus were crisp with light grill taste and mashed potatoes were delish. The garlic did not overpower the flavor of the potatoes. Trey was professional and assured guests were satisfied with their food. He offered suggestions for the use of the buerre blanc on all the dishes. Food was fresh, presentation was eye catching and most importantly flavorful.

Heavenly Hawgs BBQ was selling some of their delicious food at an event that I attended. I tried their smoked pork and smoked chicken and it was very good. So was their Brunswick Stew and smoked mac & cheese. I asked the husband & wife team how could go about getting them to cater an event/party in the future and they told me they have a page on Facebook. So I liked their FB page on the spot and know where to turn when I want to host a get-together but leave the chore of cooking some superb eats to someone else. https://www.facebook.com/heavenlyhawgsbbq/

I was somewhat disappointed in the presentation and quality of the food. The taste of the food was not what I thought would be from a professional caterer.

The menu items were personalized to fit our needs. We were able to watch Nicole prepare and cook several of the food choices and then we sampled everything. She provided details about what she cooks and the nutritional value of the items compared to other foods. The cooking lesson was a birthday for my boyfriend and his favorite part was making our own pizzas. In addition to the making pizzas to go (and who doesn't love pizza), we left with plenty of tasty leftovers from this fun experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
