Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

Should I tip the garage door repairman?

It’s not expected that you tip garage door repairmen, and normally they’re not expecting a tip for their services. However, it’s always a kind gesture to tip for excellent and friendly service.

Is it dangerous to replace a garage door spring?

Yes, it can be dangerous to undertake a garage door spring repair yourself. Fixing it requires having a working knowledge of how a garage door works and understanding how the parts work. A door can fall on you, and loaded springs can suddenly release and hit you. For this reason, it’s recommended you call a pro to replace or fix your garage door spring.

How often do garage door springs break?

Garage door springs break every three to seven years, depending on its quality and condition. For example, rust and cold weather can shorten the lifespan of a torsion spring.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Easy to communicate, and was able to come quickly. He came to repair my rental house garage door opener. I was away from the location so he used the facetime to show his completed work and pointed out potential issue in the future as well.

The tech was a true professional. He assessed the work, provided an estimate and completed it. Also made suggestions on other items needing replacing on both garage doors and provided a separate estimate which we accepted. Noticed a previous repair on another door was not done right. Explained why and made adjustments to correct what he could. Both doors are working properly and are so quiet we are amazed. We are happy with his work, grateful to his service to our military too. Would use Proline again and recommend them. Only negative is that the pro did not arrive during the time window given but did stay in touch to provide ETA and did not rush once he arrived. His goal was to complete the job and do it right.

In March I contacted them that my garage door was not working. They came out and assessed it was the springs and rollers and charged me $500 to change them. Not being in the garage door business and knowing nothing about garage door repairs , I believed them, trusted them and paid them. That did not fix the problem. I had to call and text several times asking for help as I had spent $500 and still had the same problem. WhAtever they had chosen to do and charge me $500 didn’t fix anything. Usually there is no response. I h s our entire text history begging for help and no response. I’ve called. No answer. Eventually they had the guy come out again but would schedule for a certain time and he would not show up. After this happened 3-4 times Jeff called and yelled at me that they were in the service business and need flexibility to be late. I said that’s fine if you give me a window of time such as 12-2 but you were telling me 12 and by 1 no one would show up. He even told me once that someone would be there exactly ‘on the dot ‘and of they weren’t. It’s made me late to work several times. I called and I’ve sent several texts begging for help. After spending $500 and the issue not being resolved I even explained that it’s a safety risk for my children as they are struggling with the issue. As a single mom, I’m saddened to have had $500 taken from me, ignored, yelled at, and still hAve a broken garage door that is dangerous for my young children. Shame on them.
