We had a glass bowl get into the garbage disposal. He came on time and fixed the garbage disposal in minutes for the quoted price. Some other plumbers offered to replace our disposal without even mentioning repair! Ransburg Plumbing is the real deal and we will call on him again for other handyman needs.

Wonderful guy - he is a real expert with very professional attitude. I had originally hired an HVAC technician for low cooling in one of the rooms. While the original tech was diagnosing the issue, he messed up the wiring system of the air handler and the moisture sensor and claimed that the board was faulty. But then Hassan came over and found that the wiring system was connected wrong. He fixed the wiring system and addressed the starting issue with the condenser by fixing a blown fuse as well as fixed the moisture sensor. Finally, he addressed the original low cooling issue by adding Freon. Very happy for hiring an expert like him - would gladly recommend him for HVAC repairs and diagnostics!

Keith and his assistant were great! They both were very professional, prompt and courteous. I reached out to Keith via Thumbtack and he responded right away. He was not to far from my home so we agreed upon a time for him to come over and take a look at my leaky sink and he was here at the exact time he said he would be. He look at the sink, gave me a quote and even looked a leaky toilet while he was here. I told him that I would get back with him after I talked to my husband about the cost and he said okay. Well my husband made it home no less than 10 minutes after he left and asked if the sink repair could be completed the same day. I called Keith and he had only made it a couple of miles away and said he could complete the repairs, he just had to go get the supplies. Within an hour or so, he and his assistant were back and got the job done! We only got the sink repaired, however he said if we are DIY'ers which we are every now and then, that we could call him and he would walk us through fixing the toilet ourselves. I really appreciated the fact that he said that and not just trying to make a buck. I will definitely use his services again if need be and will surely refer him to any neighbor who may need some plumbing work completed. Thanks again Keith!

W had a pipe bust due to the cold weather. Fred was able to reroute the plumbing to our outdoor spigot. The solution saved a lot of money over removing our kitchen cabinets and counter top. Well done Fred.

Greg had to problem solve 4 problem areas of our home. Plumbing and excavation and research were all part of his service. Some of it was very messy and unexpected complications caused him extra work and trips to get supplies. He adjusted his schedule and purchases to fit our needs and budget. He accomplished it all in a timely and money saving manner. He treated us like he would treat his own family. Very good communication even though some of us have age related issues. He was prepared for us to pay by credit card but offered no pressure. We called him later to advise us on a roofing problem that he knew a family member might be able to repair. He still researched the cause of the problem as a courtesy to us. Greg is now our go to guy for all our home maintenance projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
