Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a light fixture?

If you want to have a light fixture installed, the cost will likely be between $90 to $250 per fixture. The actual cost will depend on a number of factors, the first of which is the professional you hire. To find out how much you can expect to spend, contact several lighting installation professionals near you and ask for free estimates.

The type of fixture can also impact costs. For example, traditional ceiling mounts are usually less expensive than recessed lighting. The number of lights that need to be installed is another cost factor.

Do you need an electrician to install a light fixture?

Whether you need to hire a lighting installation service or an electrician to install a light fixture depends on the type of fixture, the complexity of your electrical wiring, and most of all, your experience and comfort. Depending on the location of the fixture, you may need to run wiring and install switches. If you don’t have any previous electrical experience, it’s quite possible to make a mistake that could create a hazard. However, if you know what you’re doing, installing a light fixture is fairly trivial.

How do you install a ceiling light fixture?

Some of the steps involved in installing a ceiling or hanging light fixture including removing the old fixture, inspecting your wiring, turning off the power at the breaker box, connecting wires and attaching the fixture. Some of the tools, equipment and materials you might need include a step ladder, screwdrivers, screws, wire strippers, wire connectors, a power drill, pliers or more.

If you don’t have the necessary equipment or don’t feel comfortable installing your ceiling light on your own, contact a lighting professional instead.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

John came out and assessed the situation with our kitchen under cabinet lighting and ordered the best possible replacement parts. He completed the job today and we are very pleased with how the kitchen looks with the lights he replaced. In the six plus years we have lived in this house, we have never had this much light on our counters and were never able to properly dim what we had. Well worth the cost to have our kitchen properly illuminated!

Julian and his guys did a great job. We originally hired him to fix a switch that went out, and while he was here I had him look at a fan that needed fixing (the switch didn't work and it turned out it was never installed correctly either at the switch or mounted to the ceiling). We then asked him to put in two more exterior lights (we didn't have enough lights to illuminate the front of our house) and to put in an exterior outlet. He did such a great job, he was professional, friendly, and had a great price. Thanks Julian!

Carlos was terrific. He showed up on time and continued to troubleshoot the problems with our outdoor lighting until the problem was solved and resolved. It was a challenging issue and he was very good about setting expectations and communicating the status. I would highly recommend Telenergo Service!

I contacted Carlos late at night, and he came by our house the next day. We just bought our first house and couldn't figure out how to get the ceiling fans to work, and he came and solved the problem. He also helped us fix two light switches that were not working. I would definitely use him again for any electrical needs!

To preface, I’m new Thumbtack and was fairly skeptical about the app and reviews. I was in need of some electrical work (new recessed lighting and exterior outlets) and came across the Sayari Electric Co profile and decided to give them a try. In short, the work performed by Sam was of high quality and I intend to use him for more projects in the future. The details: Sam and I did an initial walkthrough of the electrical work I needed. He was confident (not cocky), knowledgeable, listened, and passionate about his craft. The up front walkthrough put me at ease and the pricing was fair overall — that said, we decided to move forward with the work. On the day of our scheduled project, Sam showed up to my house 20 minutes early. We quickly ran through the project one more time to ensure we were on the same page and Sam got started. Initially I was planning to move furniture around to accommodate the work, but Sam came prepared. He wrapped plastic around the room’s furniture to protect it and cleaned/swept the work area after he was done. Sam was also thoughtful in his execution of the work — using a stud-finder but also tapping on ceilings and walls to confirm and reconfirm, making measured cuts in the drywall, salvaging the drywall and numbering it (in order to remember which cuts will go where), etc. His work wasn’t an exploration mission (ie, to cut drywall in hopes of getting more understanding), rather every cut in the drywall had a purpose. Remember folks, Sam is an electrician (not a specialist in drywall or painting, etc) so you’ll need to hire someone or do things yourself to repair the drywall after the work is done — this is very normal! Sam can also recommend others to help with any repairs. One other item worth noting was Sam’s flexibility as we had one additional request to add a new wall outlet for the tv I hung on the wall. All of the above holds true for the new exterior outlets Sam added to the back of our house as well. The work was precise and if high quality. I’ll throw some pics of the work Sam did in this review, but I can’t say it enough, it was a pleasure working with him and the work performed was well worth the money we paid. Thanks again, Sam!!
