I can't say enough about Michael. He has been tutoring my son for two years. Michael is encouraging and does not allow my kid to give up. He knows how to explain difficult math concepts and keeps my distracted, overwhelmed son on track. I would recommend Michael to anyone who needs solid math tutoring.

We were tutoring with Jocelyn and will continue to use her as long as she is available. Our family has used her services now for the past three years and each year she continues to grow in her knowledge. She has helped our special needs student tremendously. Our son needs the extra one one one attention due to having dyslexia and a processing disorder. Each of her sessions are tailored to him personally. She takes the time after the sessions to tell us the methods she is using, why they are helpful, and what she will do next time. In addition, Jocelyn is supportive, punctual, and flexible (in reason). We will continue to work with her as long as possible! Thank you for all of your hard work.

I must say I am extremely happy with the quality of service from the first phone call through the tutoring sessions. I have tried other tutoring companies before coming to Arbor but this is where I belong. I wish we would've started with them in the beginning. The quality of the tutoring was top notch.

Nick was professional, prompt and did a great job tutoring my 13-year-old son, who dreads the idea of being tutored. My son actually had a smile on his face when Nick left (which never happens with tutoring), and said Nick helped him understand his work much better. He’s looking forward to their next session and so am I!

When my son didn’t finish all the questions the first time he took the SAT, I knew we needed help. After I met Ralston, I chose Strive Academics for tutoring. I entered some information on the Strive website, a tutor contacted me and we set up a time. She came to our home and worked with my son for an hour, giving him strategies for pacing and testing. She also gave him test practice assignments that he could squeeze in daily to his busy schedule. My son felt more confident and comfortable with the math questions and had a better sense of timing the questions. The upshot is he finished the exam this time. Still waiting on scores, but I’m confident they’ll be improved! Strive Academics is reasonably priced, convenient to arrange and the tutor was excellent. I highly recommend Strive Academics!

I’ve taken my SATs a couple of times and although I am not a bad student, I just felt that I could have done better, I knew it inside, but just could not find where it was. I got the Getting Into The Ivys tutoring program and worked with a Chelsea tutor. What I really like about my tutor is that she’s a qualified teacher and is professional and knows how to actually teach concepts properly. I really did not want to take any chances. Going to university is very important to me and my family. Susan my tutor developed a special study plan just for me, which helped me focus on my key weaknesses, without feeling de-motivated, in-fact I was so enthused by her, I actually looked forward to all my sessions. She is a brilliant tutor and I am so very grateful. I was able to increase my composite core by 100. I am very pleased.

Helped my son accomplish just what we hoped for! Manny worked with my son to help improve his SAT math score - he is reliable and very knowledgeable, his rapport was excellent and most importantly, effective -- my son's SAT math score went from 590 to a 680 - and with just a few pointers referring to the critical reading section, he went from a 590 to a 650. Manny's one on one tutoring was just what we were looking for. Thank you Manny! Mona (Jamie)

Accounting is definitely not my forte so being able to have somebody to discuss the topics and send me in the right direction for my assignments has been a phenomenal experience. With at least 10 years of real experience, she is adequately equipped to deliver high quality tutoring in her respective subjects. Her professionalism and quality work made a favorable impression on me, and reflected on the grades I received for the assignments. I would not hesitate to hire her in the future, and I do plan on using her expert knowledge through the remainder of my accounting course. 10/10 Would hire again! I am so thrilled I chose the right tutor!

I received private Spanish tutoring from Conny, and overall, it was very pleasurable and rewarding. She was very flexible in working with students--both in creating different lesson plans and having readings of appropriate difficulty level, but she was very open to hearing student feedback. The classes and homework were loosely structured to have some creative writing assignment, and in this way, I learned a lot of new vocabulary and improved much on my reading comprehension.

I highly recommend Kellae! Kellae came to my son's rescue, and we were so grateful for her. My son was a senior and attended Peachtree Ridge High School. He began to experience "senioritis." We needed a someone to that could assist my son and improve his GPA to keep his basketball and college eligibility status. Kellae was that person! My son can testify to this and is delighted with Kellae's teaching style. My son significantly improved in all his classes and by the end of the year his GPA was the highest it has been since Middle School. Kellae went as far as to provide my son with mentoring. She also used real-world concepts to help him master difficult concepts and improved his competence and self-confidence. When Kellae became my son’s Academic Coach, he became motivated, organized, and begin to pass every test when she came into our life. This was more than we could ever dreamed and expected! Kellae is pleasant, and I highly recommend her to anyone. You will find that above being a teacher, she is devoted, kindhearted, and her compassion demonstrations she is willing to go above and beyond to help students succeed.

Charles Justus Garard, Jr. PhD I have known Dr. Garard for approximately 28 years and worked with him as a colleague, teaching at the college level from 1989 until 2003. During my association with Dr. Garard, I have observed his expertise not only in teaching and mentoring but also in his writing skills. He was exceptional at proofreading several of my documents and manuscripts, as well as offering other colleagues writing and literary assistance. In addition to his regular college teaching duties, he taught English as a second language on weekends to students in several minority communities in Atlanta. He traveled to China as a professor in English language, literature, and writing, where he served for seven (7) years. Dr. Garard has demonstrated an outstanding talent with the English language and is an invaluable asset to both writers and editors. Please feel free to contact me if I can offer further insight into Dr. Garard’s gifted abilities. Donald W. Blair 404-375-1435

I reached out to Alexis two years ago to assist my son with making a transition from private school to public High School. I was not familiar with the public school curriculum and needed to confirm if there was an educational gap or not. Alexis conducted an assessment and quickly determined that there was approximately a two year gap. Although Alexis is well versed in several subjects my son's greatest need was math. She began working with him and we saw huge improvements in a short amount of time. She has worked with him for two years, improving his math grade from failing to a low B/high C. Alexis was the perfect tutor for my son. She is very patient, understanding, knowledgeable, professional, and successful in determining the learning style of her students to maximize results. Not only is Alexis my son's tutor she has become a part of our family. She's outstanding!!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
