We hired Chef Rich and his team to cater my husband's 40th birthday party. His team serviced 60 of my guests. The full catering service included delivery/pickup of rental equipment, setup , clean up, servers, & a bartendar. They're service made the day/night enjoyable as they took care of everything including picking up the ice, mixers, etc. All i had to do was ask. The food they prepared was delicious, we had a combination of meat appetizers and vegetarian appetizers. The guests thoroughly enjoyed the food. The only thing i would have changed was to have the servers pass out the food more consistently to my guests rather than having it placed on a table in the corner as it quickly got cold and perhaps didn't taste as good as it would have hot/warm. Other than that my experience with Chef's Most Wanted Catering & Chef Services was outstanding. I would definitely use their services again for both big and small events. Thank you for making the night a success!

The service, quality of food, reliability and price was outstanding! Allen was able to prepare breakfast and lunch for a crowd of approx. 500 people. The presentation was very well organized and appealing. Allen went above and beyond to make sure we were ready for the event with follow up phone calls, emails and coordinating a time to visit the location for proper set-up. It was extremely impressive how Allen was able to handle a tight timeline between breakfast and lunch. Many compliments were shared by those who enjoyed the delicious food. We highly recommend Allen for your next catering service needs! Thank you Allen for helping make our event a huge success! Look forward to working with you again.

I just had a wonderful wedding for 70 people which Chic Chef Catering catered. I could not speak more highly of Ravi and his team. From the first contact, Ravi was very professional and accommodating. He was able to work within my budget while offering more than any other caterer would. He offered sound advice on how to get my vision realized and everything was perfect. His menu is extensive enough to accommodate anyone's taste and needs. He set up a prime rib carving station which really classed up the event. The food was amazing. I received plenty of complements for both his food and service. He checked in regularly before the event and kept me updated continuously. He went above and beyond my every expectation. I will not only recommend Chic Chef Catering for any event, I will employ his services again if I ever need catering services again.

This is now my second time working with Joseph Burby and Inglenook Catering. Inglenook catering was absolutely a joy to work with! Joe did a food tasting for us, gave wonderful recommendations that helped guide me in making decisions, and was VERY accommodating. He was a wonderful communicator and the food was a HOME RUN! Everyone at our fundraiser banquet was so impressed with the meal and the staff that was provided. This is the second time I have used Inglenook; from a 90 person event to a 350 person event, Inglenook is the caterer to have.

We used Just A Bite for our son's wedding in Wheaton held at a local church with 125 guests. We coordinated everything long distance as we live in Minnesota. Loretta was super responsive and a delight to work with on all details and questions. Everyone raved about the appetizers and there was plenty for all. Her prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity provided. Great selections to choose from. I would highly recommend her catering services.

My daughter's graduation party was a dream come true for me and my daughter. C2Details took my ideas and brought them to life in full color. She arrived 2 hours early, had everything we discussed, and went to work transferring transforming the space. Her attention details surpassed my expectations and my guests were pleasantly surprised and impressed by the decor The backdrop allowed everyone to get a good photo with the graduate in front of a classy background. Yhe glassblocked centerpieces with my daughter's name was over the top. I would definitely use her again for my next event. The bar has been set.

This was my first time hiring a caterer, and I was not disappointed. This was also my first time using Thumbtack. Had never even heard of it before googling “caterers near me”. Carol of Food with Flair did a wonderful job catering a family outdoor BBQ at my home for my dad’s 90th birthday. We had 25 people in attendance, and many commented on how good the food was. She was very responsive from the moment she and I were matched through Thumbtack, all the way through my event. She helped plan the meal, making suggestions on food items that were popular at other BBQs she had catered; arrived promptly the day of the event with much of the food prep completed and the remainder completed once she arrived; provided the warming trays, serving dishes, and serving utensils; grilled the meat (hamburgers and chicken) on my Weber grill; set up the serving table; had the meal ready in a timely fashion; put away leftovers for me; and left my kitchen clean. She also was able to work with dietary restrictions. She offered to provide paper goods and make arrangements for other supplies (e.g. canopy), which I declined. She brought two pineapple upside down cakes (my Dad’s favorite), and because we had neglected to discuss which of us would provide the candles, she decided to play it safe and brought a “9” & a “0” candle for one of the cakes. For the other cake she had a friend create a diecut that read “Happy 90th Birthday” in colors that coordinated with the cake. It was a nice, thoughtful surprise. While I had thought about asking whether she offered tastings, I didn’t due to the small size of my party; the short time frame between booking the party and the event itself; and her experience as an executive chef. I trusted that the food would be good, and it was. But I can’t share whether she offers tastings or not. My husband and I were very pleased with the service Carol provided and would definitely use her again.

John was able to build a team with in hours to accommodate our event in June 2018. The day of he came prepared with his own tent (to withstand the sun/heat) and bartending supplies. He went above and beyond and more importantly, our guests were so happy with him and his team's service!! What is making me write this recommendation is that he was personable and not your standard "bartender" company - he got along well with our guests. John maintained a positive attitude throughout the day (I say this because it was so HOT this weekend)! We couldn't be happier and will be hiring him in the future. It's well worth it because you can enjoy the company of your guests and allow the professionals handle the bar & grill!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
