My son Dan was failing math. We called Arbor because of a recommendation and they set us up with Ari (an excellent math tutor). Dan went up to a B. Then the next semester Dan went to an A. Arbor Tutors literally took my son from an F to an A.

Parent: When we needed a tutor for my son, Jeff was quick to respond and came over to help fast! He's always on time and the communication is perfect. As a parent I feel that Jeff understands perfectly what the need is and how to help. He gets to work right away and makes math easy to understand. My son really likes the way Jeff teaches him. He says he likes that Jeff doesn't do the problems for him but instead Jeff helps him out just enough so that he can figure out how to do problem by himself. Jeff is a dedicated tutor!

Suzanne has been my daughter's tutor for the past ten years. She very quickly tapped into her strengths and interests to provide fun ways to improve her language arts skills. Suzanne's special education background, in addition to her patient and kind personality have made her an excellent teacher. My daughter has absolutely loved going to "tutoring" all these years!

I could have never passed math class without this wonderful educator by my side. There's no question that I'm not the best student and I'm a struggle to work with. Maureen never gave up on me and motivated me to never give up on myself. Her teaching style and process made it so much easier for me to understand the content, where other teachers and tutors had failed again and again. Mo sets the standard that every educator should aspire to live up to. She is the absolute best!

Larry is a great tutor who really knows what he is talking about. He is always willing to stay longer during sessions as long as he doesn't have another session booked after and has extremely impressive mental math skills. You can really tell that Larry is passionate about what he does and he is a very high quality tutor.

Danny is helping my 3rd grade son with reading and writing. He is not the first tutor I tried, but is the absolute best. He was able to diagnose what my son was struggling with in a matter of 1 session and determine what he needed, which speaks to his experience. He is really able to connect with my son and show him that teachers are not just about filling out worksheets but truly can work with the child and connect. For the first time ever with a tutor, my son truely looks forward to seeing Danny.

About

I was a home-school mom for over 10 years. So, although I am not a certified teacher, I am a mother who taught and directed three children in how to learn and learn independently. Primary grades are my specialty, especially reading skills, foundational math principles, spelling, and English language basics. While I home educated, I’ve managed an apartment building in Chicago, part-time. I have been managing this property for 24 years. It is a part-time position, and I am seeking additional work at this time. I really like kids (our house is too quiet), and I enjoy helping them get excited about reading and learning. Let me help your kids to lay the solid foundation they will need to love learning for the rest of their lives.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
