I excel in conveying a strong sense of rhythm, in part, due to my experience as a dance accompanist at The Ohio State University as well as musical theatre accompanist for several troupes around Columbus. I teach piano on a Baldwin 7-foot concert grand in my home. If I travel to your home I can bring a piano-like portable keyboard if necessary. Hi there! I’m Anna Sparks, and I’m passionate about making piano lessons a fun and rewarding experience for your child. My teaching approach blends the well-loved Faber Piano Adventures books with a mix of classical music, technique, ear training, sight reading, and fun music theory activities. This combination ensures your child gets a well-rounded musical education. I hold diplomas in piano performance and pedagogy from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). I know some parents might wonder, "Can online lessons really work?" The answer is yes! I currently teach over 30 students virtually. Their progress is excellent, on par with in-person students, and the lessons are fast-paced and fun! I host virtual recitals twice a year—it's a great way for them to share their progress and celebrate their hard work. For beginners, I recommend 30-minute lessons once a week, which cost $25. Outside of teaching, I love playing piano and organ at my church, and I conduct the church orchestra and bell groups. During the pandemic, I even ran an international virtual choir and orchestra, which was an amazing experience in bringing people together through music. I’ve really enjoyed the lessons so far, and there’s a reason I chose Harrison as my teacher. I looked at a lot of other methods and teachers, but many of them felt like the same traditional approaches that never really resonated with me. Harrison’s approach was completely different and immediately stood out. He simplifies things in a way I didn’t even know was possible on the piano. I studied piano for several years as a kid, but the traditional, laborious way of learning is honestly why I never got back into it. Harrison has a completely different perspective from any piano teacher I’ve had before. After just one introductory lesson, I already felt like I had grown as a musician. He quickly identified where I should start, and even that small amount of guidance made a big difference. One of the biggest things for me was learning to play by ear. We learned ‘Amazing Grace’ by ear right away, which I had never experienced in piano lessons before. For someone with musical experience who wants to become a better musician and songwriter, ear training is essential. That really resonated with me. I do want to learn to read sheet music, but ultimately I’m here to develop as a musician. Training my ear and using the piano as a tool to write music is more important to me than just playing notes, and Harrison’s approach aligns perfectly with that.
