Joe Burby and his staff created a fantastic menu for our "Garden Party" fundraiser for the Catholic Education Foundation at a private home in Darien. The food was just delicious, he and his staff were set up and ready to go long before any guests arrived and they were incredibly patient while waiting through some speeches and presentations before serving the food. Thanks Joe for helping to make the fundraiser evening a success! The next afternoon, Joe created the menu for a private luncheon at my home for 30 women. The food selections were delicious once again, came in easy sized pans to keep warm in my oven while the concert was taking place and easy to take out and serve at the moment they were needed. The staff who delivered came right on time, through my garage as requested and without disturbing the concert. He was very kind and the delivery of the ready to go food was very smooth. Thanks again Joe! This was the first time I had every used Inglenook Catering and I ended up needing him twice in the same weekend. Very reasonably priced and extremely generous portions. Gratefully, B. Sennett

The catering service Just a Bite is owned & operated by a family who has decades of experience in the Chicagoland food industry and top restaurants. They know every recipe from any restaurant and probably make it better! They've catered small birthday parties and larger surprise events for us during the last 10 years. Everything is always delicious, affordable and easy to eat while guests are milling around. They bring everything and are dressed appropriately for an event even during set up. Super friendly owner who is easy to deal with if you have guests with finicky dietary requirements or substitutions. My advice is to get a price. Just a Bite has the price we need while still wowing our guests who always ask for the name of the caterer.

I was searching for a caterer who could make pancakes for a graduation open house and Dana was the only one in the area who would. My son has wanted a pancake party for graduation since he was in grade school. Dana made his party perfect and went out of her way to make fresh food throughout his 4 hour party! I was able to relax and just enjoy our company. Everyone enjoyed the food (pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, O’brien potatoes and fresh fruit) and couldn’t say enough about it. Thank you Dane’s Dishes for a wonderful catering experience!!

Chef Karen prepared a delicious meal for myself and my friends to celebrate my birthday. Her menu options were plentiful. She catered to my vegan friends and kept us carnivores happy too. The food tasted delicious. Her prices were affordable and fair. She was very responsive to my emails, calls, and texts. Her casserole and soup dinnerware were beautiful. Dinner service was slower than I expected because she arrived later than she planned.

Kristin is the best caterer! We connected about 3 weeks before my Housewarming party for 40 guests. Not only was she able to hire a bartender and server, she also supplied a bartender table! She worked with me to make an absolutely delicious meal (Southern/Cajun) and her signature charcuterie board is a true show-stopper! If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Will definitely plan to use her for all my catering needs.

I had the absolute blind luck to find the lovely Heather and D'Andre of Feast & Imbibe while looking for alternatives to typical "chicken or beef" caterers for my June 2014 wedding. I had already decided that I wanted to do an upscale cocktail reception in lieu of a seated dinner, and had quotes for over $10,000 for 80 people (and this was from a place that wanted to serve quesadillas and fried food as apps--that's fine, but not for ten grand and not at all what I was looking for). I couldn't see spending money like that on food that was impersonal and trite, and I began to look for a private chef or other alternatives to a standard wedding caterer. I honestly and truly feel lucky to have found Feast & Imbibe, as they allowed me to have everything exactly the way I wanted for an extremely reasonable price. You could really taste the thought, love and care in D'Andre's food--for real. I had some ideas in mind in terms of the feel of the menu, but I have to say that Heather and D'Andre totally blew me away and knocked it out of the park. From our first interaction, Heather was warm and professional and extremely honest about everything. I told her what I wanted and what I could spend, and she and D'Andre were willing to work with me to provide the experience I was looking for (and they ended up putting together a reception that was more than I could have asked for) for the price I wanted (I ended up spending a bit more than I envisioned, but it was purely due to MY changes--never experienced any pressure or felt like I was being pushed into anything). Heather was SO SO helpful; seeing as how I was doing most things myself, she offered herself and her services at any point she could to make things easier on me-- advice for other vendors, her own decorations, etc. AND THE FOOD...OMG D'Andre...keep on doin' what you're doin', becuase it's a month later and my guests are still talking about how amazing the food was. The food was so on point, the service was so thoughtful, and the selection was incredible. I was able to impress and please both my foodie friends and my meat and potatoes family--which is a serious feat itself. Everything about the actual day of my wedding was kind of a mess (weather, venue issues, mix-ups out of anyone's control), but the supreme service, hospitality and care that Heather and D'Andre put into catering my event absolutely made up for everything that went wrong. They were able to circumnavigate last minute issues with no problem or loss of cool, and everything down to the waitstaff and decor/signs for the food were top notch. My husband and I truly felt that they had our best interests at heart and put love into what they did for us, and we are eternally grateful. I could not have asked for more, and I will be recommending their services to anyone who will listen until I am blue in the face. Seriously, people, if you want the utmost in professionalism, care, delicious food, value for the $$--please go with Feast & Imbibe. They are amazing to say the least!! I would never even consider working with another caterer.

Really good Mexican food. Vegan or not. The catering coordinator was very helpful and extremely transparent on what to expect on pricing and offered great selections to feed and cater to 100 guest. There menu options was perfect and allowed us to have enough for our guest to get 2 - 3 tacos a piece. I think there attention to details was overall perfect.

Chef Yu and his sous chef were amazing. They were prompt, reliable, organized, helpful, polite, and made sure that my guests were happy. The food was delicious and the presentation was gorgeous. I was so grateful for their helpfulness during prep time, so I could get myself and my kids ready. While I was helping my kids finish their homework before our party, Chef Yu was arranging flowers and setting the table without me even asking. It was kind of like having my mom in the kitchen with me, because like her, Chef Yu just looked around to see what needed to be done and he did it. Effortless! I highly recommend Fyusion dining for their professionalism, as well as their unique and interesting menu options!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
