"Working with Dave was an absolute pleasure. We did not have any particular preference before our wedding about an officiant, but definitely were looking for someone who was experienced and gave us a great vibe. Dave was so nice and accommodating. He also gave us lots of pointers and tips beforehand to make the planning phase go smoothly. Highly recommended!!"

"Everyone willing to have an open, honest and spirit filled pre-marital counseling should totally go with Chesla! Each question stirred in us the curiosity to want to know more about each other; it was a reassurance that we do not need to know everything about each other before getting married, but we must be willing and intentional to always discover each other in the big and little things of life. Chesla did not only provide a great pre-marital counseling (it’s been a year now, and we still talk about it!), but she was quite thoughtful to deliver a homily that reflected our spiritual life, religious views, and above all our story and relationship essence."

"My wife and I used Bretta for our wedding ceremony 09/13/14. She showed up on time and looked great! The vowes and prayer were exactly what we hoped they would be and she did an impeccable job delivering them. The ceremony went flawlessly. A huge thank you to Bretta for being wonderful every step of the way. "

""Our wedding, though delightful in every way, wouldn't have been as special without Jim McFarlin's officiation. Jim took the time to learn about my wife and me so he could deliver the perfect balance of humor, insight and faith. He was entertaining, heartwarming and memorable. He helped make the most important moment of the most important day in my life perfect. So popular was his service that my brother hired him for his wedding and our wedding photographer noted he planned to in the future as well." - Ross, Ann Arbor, Mich."

"After the sudden death of my 28-year-old daughter a few weeks ago, I found myself completely lost for the first time in my life. There were so many decisions that had to be made at a time when I was least capable. My daughter Rachel was a kind and loving young woman who left behind a young son, nine adoring brothers and sisters, and a large circle of family and friends. Knowing that we needed healing through a meaningful release of emotion and grief - and we all needed to do it together - I had to find someone who would be gentle with our family and respectful of Rachel's memory. The proper someone needed to touch our hearts and help us pull through the darkest time of any of our lives. Stacey was that someone. She met with our family to understand what we needed. When we weren't certain, she asked questions that brought clarity and guided us with helpful suggestions. The eulogy that she prepared and delivered captured Rachel's essence perfectly. Stacey was strong and powerful for us when we needed it and quiet and loving when we cried. She was excellent with the twenty-somethings who were anguished in their grief and supportive and respectful of our senrior family members. She was appropriately present and at all times, she was attentive to our needs. Our huge multi-ethnic and multi-religion family felt comfort in Stacey's presence as we said our good-byes to our angel. I highly encourage anyone in the heartbreaking position of laying a loved one to rest, to place their trust in Stacey. She will make you feel at ease, and allow you to focus on yourself and your family, which is what you need during such a time."

"Alexandra was awesome! She was extremely laid back and easy to work with. She let us take control of what we wanted and she simply made suggestions to make it flow better. She was extremely professional during the ceremony and shared our excitement for our wedding day. It was a great experience. We're very glad to have had her recommended to us!"

"Marc did pre marital counseling and was the officiant at our wedding! He is an absolutely stand up guy, I have a lot of respect for him after getting to know him. He was very helpful at our marriage counseling and it has truly helped A TON! He opened both of our eyes (my wife and I) to some things we didn't realize could hurt the other. He has a great family of his own and that's why I took his advice so seriously. As an officiant he was perfect, went over everything my wife and I wanted in the ceremony and perfected it. Anyone needing an officiant or premarital counseling, Marc is your best choice. "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.
