Thumbtack Vendor Complaint – Dryer Service Call
I’m submitting a complaint regarding a recent service visit 4/22/2-26 for my Samsung dryer arranged through Thumbtack.
When the technician arrived, he required an $85 service fee upfront before he even inspected the dryer. He did not disassemble the unit or perform any meaningful diagnostic testing. After only a brief look, he said it “could be” the control panel and then quoted pricing for two possible control-panel-related parts. The quoted parts cost was close to the price of a new dryer and did not include labor.
He also stated that if he ordered the parts, they would be non-refundable even if they turned out not to be needed. This made it clear that he was guessing rather than troubleshooting with skill or certainty. I hired someone to diagnose and repair the dryer—not to speculate while putting the financial risk entirely on me.
After collecting the $85, he suggested I should just buy a new dryer at Lowe’s. He also blamed Thumbtack for allegedly not receiving my message to hire him. There were additional red flags: he did not appear to have a repair truck or business shop, and he mentioned he is moving. Overall, this felt unprofessional and misleading.
Resolution requested: I am requesting a refund of the $85 service fee because no diagnostic work was performed and no repair service was provided—only a quick visual look and an expensive guess. I also request that Thumbtack review this provider’s practices so other customers are not charged for speculative troubleshooting.
