I experienced water damage (leaking roof) and needed to have my hardwood floors repaired (damaged boards) and resurfaced. The area covered much of our first floor (kitchen/dining + hallway and 2 bedrooms)...about 875 sq ft. I obtained bids from several contractors on Thumbtack, but after speaking to each, put my trust Procare Restoration. Paul (flooring expert) visited my home, explained what was needed, and was very knowledgeable. John, at the Procare office was very prompt on providing an estimate and working with me on the specifics. Paul returned to perform the work himself (and did a fantastic job!) and was punctual, polite, and professional. The floors look great and I would recommend Procare!

My toilet overflowed and disgusting sewage water came up on my floors. I talked to Edwin and he was able to immediately come out. His partner, Alvin, fixed that and another problem I had been putting off. Very reasonable in price. Work was great and they cleaned up!!!!

We had decided to try and refinish our hardwood floors ourselves. We ended up with a disaster and need a solution asap. I sent a message on thumbtack and Lorand was at my house within 2 hours. He was able to start the next day and it was beautiful work. Little to no dust and the about 1500 sq ft plus stairs were finished in 2 1/2 days. I would definitely refer him to anyone!

Slawek was early for appointment and was true to his word about his experience as a floor refinisher. As a union Carpenter I considered renting tools and refinishing floor myself. I could not rent the quality tools perfect flooring brought to properly sand my floors. For the little bit of extra money and time I would have had to put in it was well worth hiring perfect flooring to complete my floors ! He was very professional and had professional tools to sand and refinish the floors. He also came back to add an additional coat of urethane due to the dryness of the floors. If you are looking to refinish your hardwood floors I would highly recommend perfect flooring! Awesome job !!

John and his team put in brand new, raw wood, hardwood floors in my home a few years back, kitchen, living room, dining room, and bathroom. They did an amazing job, from removal of old flooring, to install, to stain, to clean up. The end result greatly surpassed what I expected. In addition to a perfect job, they were professional and friendly and always respectful of my time and my home. I would recommend them to anyone, any size job! Lisa, homeowner, Naperville IL

So far I like nothing about this company. They gave us a quote in a timely matter but everything else had been terrible. They said they would start a 2 man team at 9am but sent 1 man who arrived an hour late, who never painted what we wanted done. He was never advised as to what the job included, he didn't even bring a ladder. Was he going to paint the floor? He left after 10pm 2 days ago worth the job less than 50% completed and we haven't heard from ANYONE at the company yet.

The entire experience from coming to measure the space, bringing samples of the flooring to the install was great! We had a couple of rooms that had carpet in them that we wanted wripped out and have hardwood laminate installed to match the rest of the condo. The guys went above and beyond to make sure that all of the transitions and capping of the upstairs area were done perfectly. Definitely recommend!

Jeff is awesome!! Comes ready to work every day, and works all day long without stopping. Very meticulous and a perfectionist which is in my book that's what I want. I had him install floors wall trim and door casings and it looks immaculate I couldn't be happier. When he completed the work he made sure everything was nice and clean. I already hired him to do another job for me, that's how good he is. If you're looking for contractor look no further hire Jeff!!!!!

I have been looking for a company to help with the remodeling in my basement. Im glad I found B & B Construction. I called Mr. Wilson out for a quote and it was the most affordable that I came across. They got started the next day. The started by taking up the tile and taking down the damaged drywall. They were very professional and respected my time. They showed up when they said they would and got a substantial amount of work done in only a few hours. After they were done with the drywall they neatly painted the whole basement. I requested the baseboards to be painted blue and the walls white. I was very satisfied with the overall cleanliness and quality of the job! Ill be contacting B & B again for my next home improvement projection the spring as well as recommending them to friends! Thank you all!

It was a pleasure hiring Jacob to complete my tiled shower project. Jacob was extremely responsive during the initial quoting and scheduling process which was extremely important to me. He was also willing to work with me on a tight schedule and worked my project in around his free time. His price was very fair and the workmanship was top notch. I will definitely call on Jacob for any future tile projects and highly recommend him. Side note - Jacob is a former Marine which made my hiring him an even more positive experience as I appreciate the service of all of our armed services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
