Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a light fixture?

If you want to have a light fixture installed, the cost will likely be between $90 to $250 per fixture. The actual cost will depend on a number of factors, the first of which is the professional you hire. To find out how much you can expect to spend, contact several lighting installation professionals near you and ask for free estimates.

The type of fixture can also impact costs. For example, traditional ceiling mounts are usually less expensive than recessed lighting. The number of lights that need to be installed is another cost factor.

Do you need an electrician to install a light fixture?

Whether you need to hire a lighting installation service or an electrician to install a light fixture depends on the type of fixture, the complexity of your electrical wiring, and most of all, your experience and comfort. Depending on the location of the fixture, you may need to run wiring and install switches. If you don’t have any previous electrical experience, it’s quite possible to make a mistake that could create a hazard. However, if you know what you’re doing, installing a light fixture is fairly trivial.

How do you install a ceiling light fixture?

Some of the steps involved in installing a ceiling or hanging light fixture including removing the old fixture, inspecting your wiring, turning off the power at the breaker box, connecting wires and attaching the fixture. Some of the tools, equipment and materials you might need include a step ladder, screwdrivers, screws, wire strippers, wire connectors, a power drill, pliers or more.

If you don’t have the necessary equipment or don’t feel comfortable installing your ceiling light on your own, contact a lighting professional instead.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Juan was not only the low bid. He accomplished everything I wanted. He installed 13 or so motion sensor light switches. I have a family member who has Alzheimer's and leaves lights on all of the time. The switches eliminate that problem. He also upgraded old school fluorescent lights with ballasts and replaced them with modern LED lights in the kitchen and garage. I'm glad I chose him and highly recommend him.

Erick did a great job on our canless light install project. It covered over 30 canless lights in the bedrooms, kitchen, and living room. He was always responsive and easy to work with in terms of scheduling and project changes. Our lights look great and we're very happy to have chosen him for this project.

Jay did an excellent job with my lights. Was promt and at a reasonable price

I previously used Jay for a job at my home but this review is for a job he did at my sister’s home. I referred Jay to her and he was very patient, kind, and professional with her job. She needed 4 lights replaced in her kitchen. The first lights she bought were going to require new outlets which would be pricey so Jay recommended she look at other light options. Once she found some she liked we contacted him and he came the next day. He and his crew did a fabulous job. They replaced 1 chandelier and 3 pendant lights. The lights were really bright so Jay recommended a dimmer switch. My sister accepted and this made the lighting better and she was so glad he recommended that. Jay will definitely be our go-to for all electrical needs. I recommend him to anyone in need of electrical work!

Erick was excellent! He expertly installed the outlet over my fireplace (took the light from the old can lights you see in pic), added 6 additional recessed led lights and replaced my ceiling fan. He even trouble shot issues with the switch to the fan which shows he always goes the extra mile. Very happy with Erick’s work and will be calling him in the future!
