Patrick was very professional from the very beginning. he came a couple times to check measurements and did above and beyond of the work that was expected. customizing things like the stand for my invoice printer, to adding a touch of paint to match my walls. I love the shelves, desk, and the cube that he made for usage of the entire wall in my office. I won't need a bookstand anymore and now have more floor space in my office, which was my main goal to begin with. my file cabinets were painted the way I wanted also. there were some last minute additions like taking the drawers from my old desk and installing on the new one... he made it happen. Thanks Patrick for a wonderful job!

If you’re in need of a reliable, honest and get-it-done general contractor for your home remodeling needs, Al and his crew are the GO TO GUYS! We recently had a rather large basement remodel project where we took an unfinished space (approx.. 900 sq. feet) to a home office/ dental laboratory finish. There were a lot of moving parts involved – all new electrical/ mechanical/ plumbing; installation of egress & small sliding window(s), walk-out door w/ retaining walls and pavement; added bathroom & work/equipment room. Al took the design plans from a paper to presence, and really worked with us to stay on time and on budget. From the initial consultation, he took his time to go over details of the project and provide us with a written proposal on the spot. What was also appreciated was that he used upgraded materials rather than standard builder supplies, which really makes a huge difference in appearance! Al and his guys are meticulous, detailed & very clean – at the end of each work day, the floors were always swept & materials put away. Another consideration for us was trust since my husband & I weren’t home during the day. I can say with complete confidence that you can trust Premier Home Services to do their job, in your home without supervision. We will definitely use them again for our next home project. Thanks Al!

Homequest did an excellent job on my home projects in Washington DC. I have a 100 year old row house and Scott and Asha did a great job managing a project to build a new powder room and renovate an old walk-in closet into an modern office space. Scott and Asha were very responsive with questions throughout the project and their prices were very fair. I would have no hesitation in hiring them again on any home construction project.

Maud did a mini makeover of my sunroom and office. She used what i already owned and added new pillows on the sofa, painted an existing mirror, and added an area rug in my office, new lamps, and greenery. She stayed in my budget and transformed two rooms of my house. In addition, she turned my dining room into a winter wonderland for Christmas! Her French accent and mannerisms added to the whole experience. I highly recommend her services.

We hired Eliza and Edison to do a color consultation on our new home purchase. the home was built in 1994, and still sporting a lot of the original builder grade paint. The home had a cold and bland feel. Amy and Brian showed with a huge color selection and helped us pick colors to warm the house, to include all 4 bedrooms, office, family room, and kitchen. Their rate was very fare for the amount of time they spent with us. They were very patient as we changed our minds a couple times in the middle of the consult. On top of it all, they made the appointment the same day we contacted them, and the appointment was only a few hours after our initial contact! We definitely recommend them!

I worked with Chloe on two projects in NYC: my personal office 5yrs ago and more recently an art exhibition. For my office space she chose furniture pieces that not only had great atheistic, but great functionality, but also tailored to my stature and default posture. I was hesitant to commit to a "set decor", but she created design and fluid palette where I could switch out certain accessories and colors without compromising the overall theme...which was clean neutrals with metallic and wooden accessories. Chloe's approach is incredibly thoughtful and artistic. I relocated to a co-working space and I look forward to her services again very soon. - Brooke

enjoyed working with Sharon for a lot of reasons. First off I found her very easy to work with. As soon as I started talking with her got a reassuring sense that she would be reliable and professional, and she was. She is highly organized and delivered concepts well within the agreed upon time frame. She responded quickly to emails and is an excellent communicator. Additionally I found that Sharon listened carefully to everything I said and wrote in emails and created her design concepts to address all the things that came up. Here efforts were clearly very personalized to the specific goals I was trying to achieve with the redesign of my medical office reception area. Her concepts were well thought out and demonstrate a talent for color, themes, and accessories that I simply could never have come up with on my own. She was also very responsive to feedback on her concepts, and adapted accordingly. But she was not a "yes-man" either. She stood her ground on things she felt were important. In summary I highly recommend Sharon for anyone considering design services. While I hired her for a small business, her skills easily translate to a home setting. I would definitely hire Sharon again.

I needed someone who was going to be there for me when I have new ideas or new directions I want to take. Special thanks to Victoria for being there for me all the times I called her to discuss and re-discuss the office event we had Customer service is everything. The decor itself was completely amazing but I appreciated her availability more than that.

We hired Shane to add a bedroom in our already finished basement. He won the bid on price, but also because he had really good ideas about how to reconfigure the space, which made it much more useful, and also attractive. He added a built-in shelf to one area, which is really beautiful and enhances the space tremendously. Based on Shane's work in the basement, we hired him to tear a wall out in our dining room, and add a door to another room in order to create a home office. We are planning to continue with more renovations, and intend to hire J&S for everything. They are easy to work with, and communicate clearly about changes of scope, and any issues that come up. We are very happy with the quality of the work as well.

Hubert helped me with the project of turning my empty apartment into a cool, contemporary home that fit my style and gave me a real "home base" for the next phase of my life. Hubert literally managed the process from beginning to end. He walked the empty apartment with me before I even signed the lease in order to take measurements and start formulating ideas for his transformation. He came back to me over the next month or so with ideas ranging from paint colors to furniture and accessories. I very much appreciated his thoughtful approach. He knew I was a busy professional, so he would meet with me at my office, in the evenings, to review various selections with me. He sometimes presented me with options that I honestly would probably have never even considered. That's what I enjoyed the most - seeing new things from a fresh perspective that ultimately fit together beautifully. Hubert managed the entire process right down to coordinating (and being at the apartment when I couldn't be there) and taking delivery of the items. He went above and beyond the call of duty and the proof is in the final product (http://www.hgtv.com/living-rooms/cool-contemporary-bachelor-pad/index.html). Thanks Hubert. Do not hesitate to use me as a reference. You have my 100% endorsement.

NK Design did an incredible job in transforming what was a serviceable but very drab law office into an enticing space that evokes confidence and demonstrates, in an elegant way, our success. Be willing to listen. Have an overall budget in mind but don't get caught up in the price of individual item. This project came in slightly under budget -- and that is because we went in a different direction than what I had originally anticipated. But for Noureen, I would have ended up with a newer version of what I had. Now, I have something I’m proud of and enjoy.

Was very pleased with Veebs Creative Designs. Ms Boyd did a professional and wonderful job creating my living area to an office and dining area. She followed through on all her commitments; she came on time as scheduled started the job and was very patient and helpful with me to make decisions on stuff I had no idea. Overall, she was a pleasure to work with and would do so again in the near future.

I hired Natasha to transform my unfinished basement into a library and home office, as well as to design my deck. I was extremely happy with the designs and the finished product! Natasha was very professional and courteous throughout all phases of the projects. For the deck, my goal was a design that blended with nature while at the same time provided enough room to enjoy the added space. Natasha not only provided a winning design, she recommended furniture and accessories that maximized the space and complemented the foliage behind my home. For my basement office and library, she was able to transform a non-descript space into an enjoyable space that looks amazing! She helped in selecting carpet and wall colors that complemented my furniture, bookcases and desk. I highly recommend MANA Design Studio. They stayed within budget and adhered to the timelines set out in the beginning of the project. Natasha provided daily updates on the design process. I am truly impressed with MANA Design Studio and intend to hire them for future projects.

Lisa has a gift for design. She helped us with several rooms, including the living room and office area. She also helped us select the furniture and remodel our screened in porch and patio for all rooms. Sometimes she uses items that we already have and other times she will bring in an accent piece that will make the entire room look stunning! Thanks Lisa for all your hard work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
