Chef Kev did a wonderful job! I have used him twice now for two work events and they went off without a hitch. Not only was the food delicious, everyone going back for seconds but the service and cost was unparalleled. He is always very accommodating to the vegetarian and gluten free diner in the group. Another plus is all the leftovers he packages up for me at the end of the night, the office ate well the next day! I would use Chef Kev again in a heartbeat, in fact I can't wait for our next event.

Chef Serge was eager to please and worked with us throughout the planning process to design a menu that captured our vision for a family wedding dinner. He worked around a number of dietary needs (gluten free and vegetarian options), incorporated vegetables from our garden into several of the recipes, and he even adapted some of the recipes for the kids. The food and service were excellent!

Richard was great to work with! The food was delicious and plentiful. In addition to a lovely spread on our dining room table and passed hors d'oeuvres, he delighted guests with hot off the stove crab cake sliders while also carving the beef! Richard provided a bartender and server, both of whom were professional and extremely competent. We felt like guests at our own party - thanks Richard!

On a whim, I decided to use Thumbtack to find a caterer for my mom's 72nd birthday party. OMG. I am SOOOO glad that I did!! I have planned a number of parties in my day, and I have yet to find one with such great professionalism and wonderful customer service I experienced with AC Catering. First off, they can fix just about anything!! While I had a basic menu in mind, I was forced to rethink things based on the wide variety of options presented by AC Catering. Other caterers wanted me to come up with the menu initially without giving me an idea of their speciality items. With AC Catering, you can get ANYTHING from breakfast, lunch, dinner..including smoked pit grilled items. So, I contacted them with my initial thoughts for a menu. Within 2 days, I received a proposal from the owner, George. Pricing was perfect, even with delivery. Additionally, they provide utensils, plates, condiments, etc. I was pleased. I had to make a last minute change. George was able to accommodate my request with no hassle. I called him just to make sure this change wouldn't pose a problem. He said "No worries. I got you." And, he wasn't kidding. So, party day comes. I'm a bit nervous because I never tasted the food or visited his brick and mortar store. However, the previous reviews from Thumbtack customers were all stellar. After meeting George in person, I totally understand why the reviews are so stellar. George is extremely pleasant and engaging. He arrived on time and was totally prepared to set up everything. He shared some jokes with my brother. Gave compliments to the birthday girl. He even shared the history about his family business. This party was for 50+ people. So, everything had to be right. Let me just say that George and his team didn't disappoint! The greens (with smoked turkey), baked beans and rice were EXCELLENT. I've eaten a lot of rice in my day. But, can I tell you how fabulous the yellow rice is? Very delicious. For meats, I ordered bbq chicken and burgers. Again, everything was wonderful. You would think burgers would just be bland and lacking flavor. NOT AC Catering burgers. They were thick, juicy, and seasoned well. More than enough food was provided. In fact, I had to encourage guests to take home plates of food. The deviled eggs were tasty. However, they were a bit messy due to lots of filling. But, it was totally fine. My guests put the smash on them. All throughout the event, everyone had positive comments and asked "who catered the food?" I didn't hesitate to tell them about George and AC Catering. I HIGHLY recommend them. In fact, I'm trying to find another excuse to celebrate so I can utilize them again!! Thank you, George, for making my mom's birthday so great. You will be hearing from me again. May your catering business continue to grow. God Bless you and your family.

I was asked to complete the task of finding a caterer for breakfast for a corporate meeting of 80 people within 4 days and to have them deliver the food before 6am. Thomas Franklin at Columbia Chef Catering was the 3rd business I had spoke to regarding my function. He was so pleasant and when he said yes to the 5:30am drop off I was sold!! Thank you so much for all of your assistance in making our function so much more pleasurable.

I can tell you from experience that Top of the City is by far and away the best deal for a 5 star catering experience. Our 6th daughter was just married and I wish we had found Top of the City for the first 5. They gave us the best price with the most elegance and the most complete service than any of the previous caterers we used or interviewed, and we probably have checked out 30 during the past few years. Our guests raved over the appetizers, the dinner was nicely prepared and plentiful. The staff was very professional and friendly. Our wedding reception went smoothly and we were free to enjoy ourselves. Maribel the owner was immediately responsive every step of the way in the planning and flexible in accommodating our special needs and desires. Top of the City gets my vote for the best deal in town. I held a birthday brunch for a friend in my home for 15 guests. Iyea prepared chicken and red velvet waffles, shrimp and grits, and egg fritatta. The food was delicious and there was more than enough quantity wise. Iyea stayed in touch leading up to my event and followed up afterward for feedback. I would use her again. She does not handle the presentation of the food so you will need to be prepared with your own serving dishes.

I hired Dani to cater a large work lunch at the non profit think tank where I work. She did an AMAZING job. She was extremely responsive, easy to schedule with (even when I sent her the wrong date), showed up early, and stayed throughout the lunch to make sure everything ran smoothly. Her food was delicious and easily catered to a range of dietary restrictions. About 90-100 people showed up (I had asked for catering for 70) and there were even leftovers. I can't recommend her enough! She has since come back for multiple events. Everyone at work has raved about her cooking.

I was in desperate need of a Caterer for my wedding and about 4 months before our big day, October 4, 2014, I found Mrs. Patricia Wright online. I read prior reviews on Ms. Wright and also interviewed other caterers, but after she invited my then future husband and me to test her food, I knew I had to have her for my wedding. Ms. Wright is honest, professional, personable and a JOY to work with. I trusted her and knew that I did not have to worry any longer. Not only is she professional, but, her food is "out of this world". She worked beyond expectations and everyone at my wedding gave compliments on how well the event took place and how delicious the food was. I can not thank Mrs. Wright enough for the outstanding job she did for our wedding.

I don't think I can truly and fully express how blessed Ryan and I were to have had Eleven Courses as our caterer for our wedding day. From the moment we had our tasting, to the finalizing of details, to the actual wedding day, Ryan and I were in great hands. There was NEVER a doubt in our minds that Eleven Courses would let us down. I feel like I could write an entire essay on how amazing Melissa Benson and the rest of the Eleven Courses crew carried themselves throughout this wedding planning process, without mentioning how amazing the food was...because I could totally write an entire essay on that too. To keep things short though, Melissa was just great with following up and answering all of our questions. Catering to our vegetarian guests was a breeze, and making changes to the contract was effortless. Melissa, I am so sad Ryan and I never got the honor of meeting you in person, but if I could, I would give you a HUGE hug right now for everything you did for us. Chrissy was our day of coordinator, which i was personally ecstatic about because she hosted our food tasting, and I absolutely loved working with her. Chrissy, if you are reading this, I am so sad that i did NOT get a chance to hug you that day, because you were just awesome about listening to our needs, and really making sure that Ryan and I got a chance to eat. Not only that, but Ryan and I came back to the venue and found that the room was absolutely spotless. Thank you SO much for taking care of the cleanup. Now on to the food: I can only say one word: incredible. EVERYONE in the wedding commented on how crazy amazing the food was. We barely had any leftovers!! [Which, I was very sad about haha]. Chef Jim, it was such an honor to have met you....your dishes were excellent. And my goodness, can I just also add how incredibly humble Chef Jim is? This is actually turning into an essay, so to sum it all up, Eleven Courses, I am thoroughly impressed with how great you guys were on our special day. If I ever need catering services, I will call you up in a heartbeat. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Lena

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
