Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

Excellent work. Job presented some challenges with tile installation due to unique corners and out-of-square walls combined with large format tile shape that John and crew handled with excellent communication and craftsmanship. Kapstone earned my highest recommendation.

Had new tile installed in the kitchen of our home. Mydesign was very professional, helpful, knowledgable, and very polite to me, my wife and my 4 month old daughter. He didn't take any of my leftover grout or tile for himself, which allowed us to return some products that saved us a lot of money. I would recommend his service to anyone.

First let me state the postives: communication was timely and easy. He always returned calls. Also, they did a great job cleaning up after themselves. Negatives: I was having tile laid in 3 bathrooms and having tile placed above two shower surrounds. The quote I was given never stated there was an extra fee for taking up the toilets and putting them back down. Being that it’s a bathroom I think that should be included in the price. Even if it wasn’t, it should have been added to the original quote and not added later after the job was started. 300.00 isn’t small change. Some of the workmanship could have been better. In one bathroom they started the tile on the wrong side which resulted in two small cut tiles being on the main entrance to the room and could have easily be hidden behind the toilet instead. Lastly, the shower surrounds are mediocre at best. The only saving grace is you won’t really see them with the shower curtain closed. He lost a referral to my daughter when he changed the price mid job. Seems like a decent guy just needs to polish up some of his skills and business practices.

He did a great job working with my schedule, kept me in the job rotation even when my tile from an outside vendor was delivered late. Very professional, took pride in his work. He went beyond my expectations taking extra time and care to cut tile to fill small hidden spots that others would have skipped or just grouted in. Completed the job on time and left my home cleaner than he found it. I will highly recommend his services to my friends.

Knowledge, Communications, Effort towards customer service is exceptional, noted and greatly appreciated. Very impressed with every aspect of the project Kapstone was involved with. Lots of details with the installation of a radiant tile flooring system which John and his team handled extremely well. Many times they went above and beyond, for which I couldn't be more pleased. It would be very difficult to find a more professional company to handle your tile and flooring project! Still trying to figure out how to rate Kapstone with 6 stars. Seems only logical and fair since they went over 110% in their work!

I would recommend Eric to anyone who is looking for quality work done at an affordable price. He was able to fix our shower tiles promptly and professionally. It looks like a new shower! Also he quoted us a price and stuck to it with out adding additional charges as an afterthought. So many home improvement people are guilty of this but not Eric.

Our project was a front porch and step. I received a quick estimate that beat the others I had. We had a discussion on the best way he thought to approach it since it was a little off from side to side and it turned out great. We have another kitchen tile project in a few weeks and look forward to Ismail doing that job also.

Ismail is an extraordinary craftsman and he exceeded all of my expectations. Although the job was very demanding he effortlessly balanced all of the requirements, met the budget constraints and finished in the desired timeframe. Because he demonstrated nearly a master's ability setting tile it's hard to imagine he's as skilled in any other trade but none the less, I have complete confidence that he can do anything to which he sets his mind.

He is punctual, professional and courteous. He worked professionally and did what was expected of him. Very reliable to leave around the family, honest and trustworthy around your belonging. He wasn't aware that he was monitored but I would trust him around my kids any day... THANK YOU for a great job you've done!!! I would recommend him to anyone who needs work done in their house around their loved ones!!!
