Strongmen Waterproofing did a great job! They looked at my elderly parents’ pump system the same day that I contacted them. They installed a temporary pump because the existing pump died and a heavy rain storm was predicted to dump 3” in less than 24 hours. If my parents didn’t have an operational pump, their basement would have flooded. When the new pump and battery backup arrived they installed it. I love the Pump Spy monitoring system that Strongmen Waterproofing recommended. I get weekly updates via email on the system so I can see that it’s running properly. I can also check the app on my phone during big storms to make sure there are no issues. My parents are in their 80’s and they no longer have to worry about water in their basement.

Robert was able to work with what I had already done and make it work for me (basement remodel). He had great suggestions when I needed them, and didn't have a problem with my smaller requests. He is friendly and personable. I will hire him again if/when I need more work done. I will upload photos when I get the entire basement finished, still have some painting and flooring to do myself.

Sean was courteous and prompt. He and his crew came out on a very cold day to clean out an unheated basement of construction debris and other contents as well as household items within the home that had accumulated over a 50 year period. They got the job done quickly and at a rate that was quite reasonable.

Dustin was outstanding!!! I had such a weird basement that needed to be finished. He was so friendly and understanding with all of the "dumb" questions I had. He was efficient and used great communication throughout my project. Any little details I had questions about he would find a suitable and affordable solution. He really was out to help me and not out to just get paid. It was comforting having a contractor that really was there to help YOU out! We were so pleased with the result and everything that Dustin did for me and my husband as we really needed a great job done which is exactly what we got!!! Great prices and someone you can trust!

I contracted with Homekore to finish my 1000 square foot basement in my new condo. They did a great job and finished it in the time span that I was told. They handled the whole job, including plumbing, electrical, plastering, and painting. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to my friends.

Moving to a new area and trying to locate a reputable contractor can be a challenge. We heard about L.J.V Carpentry and decided to try them, as we needed work done in our basement due to a severe flood. I was quite impressed with how hard Leo and his crew worked to clean up the debris and their attention to every detail was like no other. We now have a beautiful 3/4 bathroom & recreation room for our teenage daughter. We look forward to having Leo continue to help us remodel other areas of our home. He does outstanding work and the work is 100% guaranteed. I would highly recommend his services.

Joe performed a significant amount of work in our home including: remodeling a bathroom, laying tile (2 rooms), enclosing a garage, remodeling a den, building and installing an ornamental railing on a portico over our front door, and installing and painting 4 rooms/ceilings. His work was completed on time and on budget. He was neat and most importantly, he showed up when he said he would! I would highly recommend Joe to anyone looking for a trustworthy and professional contractor. Richard G. , North Easton

John has been working with us for the last two weeks. Doing outside painting (with all the necessary prep work) on our cottage. He painted the shutters and has hung them. We have some cement steps that needed patching - he did that. He did labor for us in that he cleaned out our basement and took debris to the transfer station as well as dropped items off at Goodwill for us. Today he is painting (with all the necessary prep work) our entry room into our house. If you get the idea that he can do pretty much everything you are correct to come to that conclusion. One thing that we appreciate is that he calls the night before he comes - to confirm the appointment. He does what he says he is going to do. And the price for his service is extremely reasonable. We would strongly recommend him.

Brian did an amazing job. He came by and gave me a very reasonable quote for the job, and got started shortly after. He's always very responsive by calls or texting. I would definitely reccomend his service for any project you may have in your home. I have contacted many carpenters for price comparisons and had dealt with a lot of unprofessionalism throughout this basement project of mine. Finding BLC drywall was 100% the best thing that has happened through it all.

In planning our basement project, we accepted proposals/bids from five contractors. We picked Bill Eldridge because of a gut feeling and best price! As the job progressed, we knew that we picked the right person. His positive attitude, coupled with his experience and attention to detail, became apparent early on. He brought to the table ideas that we never have thought of. The finished project was beyond our highest expectations. Our friends and family could not believe how great the room has turned out. We are planning future endeavors in upcoming months and expect Bill to be front and center in getting them completed. Mr. & Mrs. John Fitzpatrick

I would highly recommend Stamp and Stone to anyone looking to get work done. Paul was an excellent worker and did everything he could to get the job done exactly how I wanted. To giving me the best recommendations and the best prices on everything, I was very satisfied. Paul and his crew re-did my basement, and made a total transformation. Months later, I contacted Paul to come back and fix up my outdoor patio. Within a week, Paul was back at my house working full days until the job was done. Wonderful workers and very very nice men. Highly recommend!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
