I honestly cannot say enough about Him - Movers and the people who work for this company. Brief background. I had no intention of hiring professional movers,Packers ECT. Frankly, My family made many moves with the military and the military paid a fortune each time.So financially I did not think it was feasible.Well let's say once Murphy's law entered the picture,it was on a roll. With very little time, miscomunication and no way of getting even a truck for the next day,I turned to Google, not even knowing what I was looking for. I discovered the great website Thumbtack and Movers was the 1st word I saw. I received 4 bids but only H- Movers could come out in less then 12 hrs. Michelle assured me I would be very happy and their prices were reasonable,so I thought. Let me say that their prices are far more then reasonable...you cannot beat them. What these 2 very professional and efficient men did in 3 hrs,I've seen Nationwide movers take all day. They moved 3 Temperpedic heavy *** beds from tiny second floor rooms to truck in 20 minutes without a scratch. If you have ever moved a temper pediac, that should say it all. Yet it doesn't. Not only did they manage to move more then I had expected with timeframe, they were reassuring and experienced. My only regret is not finding them sooner. I would have saved money if I had them do entire move. I can say this with certainty because due to miscomunication,I ended up with one of their competitors 2 days later, too help finish the move. I don't know if I'm allowed to post pictures so I'll just say it was a nightmare and cost double for them to cause more work then nessasary. Moral is PLEASE DO NOT THINK YOU ARE SAVING MONEY BY GOING WITH CHEAPEST RATE PER HOUR. STAY Away and call Michelle at H- Movers. Ask if Steve is available for your move and relax! They are awesome!

The two men that moved my "hospital" bed and lift chair from my storage unit to my home were cordial, efficient, willing, helpful, expedient, professional and pleasant. They were late getting there, but so was I. Plus when they came to my home, they had to move furniture around, and they didn't complain. It wasn't easy for them. One item was brought up very narrow stairs to my upstairs bedroom. The value was excellent! Hope they didn't get too banged up. They took good care of my heavy furniture. God bless them!

They did a great job transporting a large, heavy treadmill that required much more work than I had expected! They disassembled the treadmill to fit it through the doors and then reassembled it. Great guys!

I hired New Frontiers Moving Services to move a large, heavy dresser that I bought from Wayfair (and that Wayfair was not able to deliver up two flights of stairs). They were very professional, on time and were very careful in moving the dresser.

John and his helper did a super job moving our VERY HEAVY bedroom set from the second floor into our garage. He was polite, neat and methodical. The only issue John has is his time management. He was several hours late. However, he was very apologetic and offered to take money off the job because of the delay. We would definitely use him again!

Leandro and his crew were some of the best movers we've ever had. And we've moved a lot. They were fast, efficient, careful and courteous. We moved into an older home and they were experts and getting big, heavy items into tight doorways and up and down narrow stairs. Great price too. I would highly recommend them.

Frank and the Hebert Movers helped move my furniture into a storage unit in August and then helped move it into a new condo just recently. The service was outstanding. They had 3 movers and a large truck to move everything we needed including 3 bedrooms and large/ heavy furniture. They were on time and moved quickly. No damage to anything occurred. I would definitely recommend Hebert movers to anyone who needs help with their move.

Fantastic Service! This was my first time using professional movers, and they put the capital P in professional. Recently moved my house with them. They gave me a call before as promised and finished the job in 2 hours. They were very efficient and could lift heavy weights at one go.

Michael transported a very large and heavy treadmill from our storage unit to the third floor of our home. It went up two fairly narrow stair cases that had a 90 degree turn. They arrived on time, moved it without incident and re-assembled it before leaving. Was worth every penny and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again or refer to a friend/family member. Thank you Michael and Jared!

I had to have a treadmill moved from my garage, up two flights of stairs to a room in my house. The treadmill is big and very, very heavy. Takes at least two men to lift this monster. To get it into my house meant negotiating small door ways and tight turns. Mission impossible type job. Michael, with a colleague, got it into the room. It took everything they had to make this happen. Sweat pouring out of them - doing everything they could think of to make it work. They never gave up. I think most pros would have said that the physics would not have allowed to get this treadmill into the room. This in addition to the fact that he was there when he said he would be. He charged what he said he would charge. I would not look anywhere else for future projects. There was some damage to a wall as a result of the move. He called the next day to offer to patch it up. For me - the damage was minor considering what it took to make this happen. The fact he called after to make sure I could rely on him is priceless. Guys is a rockstar - you can't go wrong with him. I have zero association with him but I feel compelled to to write this recommendation because of what he did.

I was pleasantly surprised when I contacted Last Minute Movers one night, and they were able to help me the very next day. They moved a heavy piece of granite from my car to the kitchen . . . I was able to entertain in my new kitchen that same day!

There really are not enough words to explain what a pleasure it was to work with Chuck and Move Master. We hired labor help on another site, pre-paid, and the company never showed up nor returned calls and messages. Move Masters responded within minutes to my communication, and kept in very close contact while on his way - updating us with arrival times, etc. Chuck is a ROCK STAR. Because it was at the very last minute, and he was not expecting a job same day late afternoon, he did not have a crew available but was kind enough to head down and help us finish loading the truck. He did all the heavy lifting himself - on items my husband and I could not budge ourselves! Move Masters stuck with us to the bitter end, following us to our new place to help us unload for a total of 14 hours straight. Yes, the move took 14 hours, and there were NO complaints or negativity of any kind (except from my husband and I who pooped out about 7 hours before Superman did). There was no weird awkwardness or creepiness either (if you have hired movers before you know what I mean), he was interesting and pleasant to talk to and hang around for hours and hours. Chuck was still smiling and going strong when "we" (by "we" I mean 99% him) finished unloading the truck at 4am. Move Masters brought tons of supplies -clean supplies! No fithy blankets. He also had high quality equipment, which helped with his superhuman powers. Clearly Chuck is a professional. Every item was wrapped carefully, which is saying a lot because we have a ton of delicate art pieces. He did not slack at all on the handling of our items. Everything arrived in perfect shape, not one thing was dinged or broken that wasn't previously ruined by my family! We had rented a uHaul so Move Masters was just loading and unloading. Obviously it would have been faster if his crew was available, but we were so desperate after our other movers went MIA that we didn't care if it would take longer. Finally, we were very pleased with the price he charged. Move Masters is the whole package - professional, extremely careful, tenacious, enthusiastic, driven, motivated, accommodating, encouraging, and much more fairly priced than the other moving companies which I felt were gouging me with their same-day quotes because they knew we were desperate. Move Masters did not take advantage of our desperation, and came to the rescue with quality items, a smile, and great gusto. I will highly recommend him to everyone I know, and I can say, based on my experience, you should hire this company.

I enlisted Madden Home Services to load a two bedroom apartment onto a moving truck. Although they were new to Thumbtack and didn't have any reviews, their price was fair and competitive so I decided to take a chance. I did not regret my decision. Kyle was enthusiastic and polite in all his communications. He texted me the week prior and morning of the move to confirm details. Kyle and his assistant arrived early, took direction well, and communicated any issues and concerns regarding the packing of the truck. (There was a concern that all my stuff would not fit in the truck because I have a lot of stuff.) They worked consistently through drizzle and light rain without complaint. It took a little over 3 hours to load the truck. I recommend Madden Home Services for your heavy lifting and moving needs.

They helped my family and I after a water damage from the heavy rains. We called them around 6:00am and by noon, they had removed the section of walls and ceiling that were going to collaps. Cleaned up, protected all of our belongings and setup drying equipment. Jose and his team were excellent!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
