I used Thumbtack and got 5 responses to my request to have an interior chimney removed. Future of Construction was one of 3 who came to my home and made a bid. His bid was reasonable and his approach was friendly and responsive. He came exactly when he said he would for the bid and to start the project. He responded quickly to emailed questions. He worked alone on the chimney removal. He set up for the work carefully and thoughtfully. He was prepared to protect other items in the room and in the house from the dust generated. His patch work on the ceiling opening was well done. The chimney was removed down to the floor without damage to surrounding pipes. The cleanup was thorough. Adam did an outstanding job on my chimney removal project.

Lina did a great job offering full service solutions for our kitchen and dining room remodeling. At the 2nd meeting she had prepared detailed, professionally produced schematics and diagrams showing how the rooms would look. She also provided excellent brochures for fixtures, flooring, and lighting. My wife and I were thrilled with the outcome and would highly recommend Lina for any interior home projects requiring the services of a design architect.

January 27, 2015 Heidi helped us with designing and decorating my living room area and the upstairs wall space. This project encompassed purchasing products and furniture, supervising the installation, and making the finishing touches. Heidi is incredibly talented at ‘pulling the space together’ and executing on the home owners’ vision. She is incredibly thorough and creative- we had several art pieces that did not fit in standard frames and custom frames would have taken too long and expensive. She created borders with different color to create a dual border frames and the art and photos look amazing. Another thing that impressed me about Heidi is her ability to recommend various items at different price points and recommending where I should spend a little extra for quality vs. where I don’t have. The finished living room area and the walls look amazing and we highly recommend Heidi. We will definitely be making personal recommendations to our friends and family if and when they need this type of service. Kristie F.

Pamela helped us through a whole house renovation. We purchased a house, built in 1865, in RI while still living in NJ. We hired Pamela to help us though some "minor" changes. Well, we fell in love with the house and the possibilities and ended up completely remodeling essentially every room. Pamela, guided us with her vision and had an A+ contractor she works with. I couldn't be happier with the outcome. We love it so much we've decided to make it our permanent home. We are looking forward wrapping up furnishing and decorating our home with Pamela's keen eye, particularly when picking colors. Please go to to see my dream kitchen.

Five stars for sure!! She did an incredible job at a very fair price!! So happy with how the house looks. We had a vacant house and all of the furniture and decor that she added go perfectly. We had one small mix up which she offered to fix the very next day at no additional cost. Really happy with the service and I will be recommending her company to our real estate agent for sure!!

I have never worked with an interior designer before so I had no clue what to expect or if I could even afford one. I was looking for ideas for a floor plan for my bathroom reno. Lidia came to my house and explained the process in detail. For $500.00 she and her assistant came in and took measurements of my bathroom. From there she came up with 4 different floor plans. After I chose the one I liked the best, she gave me permit drawings for the town. Lidea then contacted me and we went shopping for tile ideas. There were a couple of floor tiles that she picked out that I wasn't really fond of until she coordinated it with an accent tile. WOW! I fell in love with it. She definitely has a talent with design. I would recommend her services to anyone.

We hired Juliana, owner of Creative Interiors, on the recommendation from a person that we worked with. This person contracted with Juliana to redecorate the bedroom and living room in their home. They were thrilled with the results, and commented that Juliana did an exceptionally great job. When we renovated our home, Juliana and I went shopping for fabrics for new drapes for the house; new bed comforters; and fabrics for sofas and chairs that we wanted recovered. She is a wealth of information about decorating, and she brought us to shops that we would not have been familiar with without Juliana's help. We also went to an art gallery with her, and we bought a couple of prints and had them framed. Juliana was amazing with the help she gave us choosing frames that looked the best with the prints we chose. She put 100% into helping us redecorate our house. She came to our house and helped us hang the framed prints , explaining the lighting in the rooms and the pros and cons of putting the prints on certain walls. The results were beautiful because of Juliana. Another thing that we really appreciated about her is that she taught us so much about decorating. She explained everything to us as we shopped. No matter how many questions we had, Juliana always had the answers. Juliana is a kind and caring person. She is very easy to work with. She has unending amounts of patience, and accommodated all of our needs. Juliana never cancelled an appointment with us, she was always on time, and her help was invaluable. The characteristic in Juliana that we appreciate so much is her honesty. She never tried to persuade us to purchase anything we did not like. She insisted that we make the final decisions on all purchases. Juliana's words to us were: "At the end of the day, you live in the house and you have to be happy with it." We were happy when it was completed and we still are grateful that we met and worked with Creative Interiors.

John Maciejowski is the ultimate, talented professional. We recently gutted and remodeled both a master and guest bathroom. John created the look we were going for and the bathrooms came out great. He listened to what we wanted, took us on store and factory tours to pick out the marble, granite, tile, fixtures, vanities and paint colors. Everything fits together so perfectly. We love the outcome. John is very detailed and follows through on everything. You would be wise to pick John for your next remodeling or refurbishing project. We have worked with John 2 other times to refurbish our living room and bedrooms. The furniture, artwork and overall color schemes have always come out first rate!!

When most people look to hire a designer they seem to focus on the interior of the home; however, the outside is the first glimpse of your dream that your visitors will see and Maria is your designer for both views. I recently had a cabin built in the mountains of Vermont and Maria and I went back and forth all day long as to the alignment, spacing and size of the 3 upstairs windows in the front of the cabin. The end result turned out to be the difference between a great look and a spectacular look, and as it was difficult for me to see it on paper, she knew exactly what she (and I) wanted to see. She continued on into the interior of the cabin and her ideas, whether they be major or minor, have made the same difference inside. I have known Maria all my life, and her ethics, her love of design and her patience with clients (as this is a very stressful time for many people) is amazing. You don't find her qualities very often in today's business world, especially in her profession. I will be more than happy to speak personally with anyone who may looking to hire Maria. You will not be disappointed!!!!!! You will be thrilled!

My husband and I are nearing the completion of a new home from the ground up. I recently hired Melissa to help me with paint selections. I was also in the process of selecting tile for the bathrooms and mudroom when we started working together. Fortunately I got her input before making any final decisions. My initial choices would have been a mistake. With Melissa's help and guidance, I selected tile and paint colors that are current and stylish, all of which will ultimately enhance both the aesthetic and monetary value of my home. My only regret is not hiring Melissa earlier on during the planning stages because I did make some costly mistakes. She is talented and her pricing is very reasonable. As I said to my builder, she was worth every penny. He was thrilled because in assisting me with decisions, she helped move the construction process along. She also spent quite a bit of time with me via email, phone and text for which she does not charge. I give her 5 stars!!

My experience in working with Nancy Jane Sweeney. A year and a half ago I purchased a townhouse in Nashua, NewHampshire that I wanted to have completely renovated before I moved in. The general contractor hired to do the workintroduced me to Nancy Jane Sweeney, an interior designer who had worked withhim on other projects. I immediatelyliked Nancy, and she and the general contractor made a great team. Work was of the highest quality, scheduleswere maintained, and the costs were as anticipated. Last but not least, it was fun working withthe contractor and Nancy. The renovations included new kitchen, new bathrooms, new oakflooring, new tile floors in bathrooms, new gas fireplace and mantel, new lightfixtures throughout, window treatment, and selection of colors for the paintedwalls. I lived out of state at that time and would come to thetownhouse from time to time to meet with Nancy and the contractor. Nancy wasvery efficient in her use of time. For everymeeting, there was an agreed-to agenda and Nancy was well prepared. On one two-day session, we visited a plumbingsupply store and selected all the items needed for a new kitchen and newbathrooms, down to the last detail. Onthe second day, we selected new light fixtures. Prior to our meetings, Nancy had been in touch with a sales person ateach store. We had excellent service, and no time was wasted. During thisvisit we also decided on the paint colors for all the walls. Two intensive days, but very satisfying—andfun! It is said that the devil is in the detail, and Nancyhandled the myriad of details very well and with good humor. If I had any question or doubt about herrecommendation of choosing “A” over “B,” she would explain her choice and Icould then see she was right. Nancy is very talented, creative and well organized and hasa delightful personality. She isenergetic and able and loves a challenge.

Denada has a natural skill for design and sharp eye for detail that makes her, in my opinion, one of the best interior designers out there. She is able to take your ideas, provide her professional advice, and turn them into a reality, all on time and within budget. She is able to take any space and transform it into something wonderful and impressive. She has worked on many projects for me ranging from photography, staging, interior design, painting, decor, and she kills it ever time. I am most impressed with her versatility and her ability to add her personal touch to make each space unique and appealing. I highly recommend StylebyDenada, you won't be disappointed with her work.

My husband and I had a great experience working with Hannah. We recently moved into our first home and were unsure of what we wanted to do with the space. As our house is much larger than our previous home (but not a forever home), we struggled with which areas to focus on improving and how to prioritize purchasing furniture. We weren't sure what our "vision" for the space was, and she started by helping us tease through that, offering options without overwhelming us. Hannah was able to help us make selected improvements that had a big impact, focusing on common spaces and "high traffic" areas, recommending decorations and furniture that were both within our budget constraints and timeless enough to stay with us for years to come. I loved her small style suggestions that quickly transformed a room - even just placement of furniture or artwork. Hannah explained what changes would help make our home feel more finished and quickly helped execute, based on our personal style. I would recommend Hannah over and over - if you are looking for a full interior makeover or just a small space, she's able to translate her skills to whatever the task.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
