When my fiance first told me about Jen and her company Dare to Taste I was a little wary to be honest. One look at her website and her accolades and I immediately thought it was going to break the bank on our already small budget and to be honest her services seemed a little out of our league. I was quickly proven wrong however. Planning a wedding is no easy task and especially planning a wedding on your own with several different vendors. Jen made the entire process pretty easy. She adhered to our budget and provided us with several different options. On the day of Jen and her staff were there early and ready to go. They asked a few questions but for the most part they took care of everything and the questions they did ask were about what WE wanted and how WE wanted things done. We wanted our wedding to be fun and a little less formal because that's the kind of people we are and we could not have picked a better caterer to accomplish that. The food was great and the Smores bar was a huge hit with our guests. I'd recommend Jen and her people to anyone who's looking for a professional and also someone who's fun to work with. My wife and I could not say enough good things about her.

Sara and her team provided fantastic catering services to a house party of forty people. Sara customized the menu and provided the right service and peace of mind to the host for the occasion. Guests gushed at the exquisite spread and food. Where so many caterers are high priced and rigid, Sara's courtesy, professionalism, flexibility, responsiveness and affordability back an art form.

Chef Cristo was excellent! Of all the caterers with whom I was in contact, he was the only one to provide acustom menu for our themed Octoberfest. He worked with me on menu edits and cane within my budget and was a great communicator. The food was delicious! We had the party for 30 caterer and asked for a grillmaster and second person to make sure the party went smoothly. They showed up on time with all of their top notch equipment and quickly set up (and were even nice to my very curious 3-year-old). Throughout the party, they were discreet and cleaned up behind our guests and I was able to host. When the party was wrapping up they tidied up all of their equipment without my even noticing and were ready to go once the party wound down. I merely had to close the door when the party was over and my house was totally in order. It was a dream! All of our guests told me afterwards how much they enjoyed the food - even our very finicky Vegan guest who was able to tell what she could eat because the chef provided a full ingredients list. To boot, this is a family business with a great family. Go with Chef Cristo!

Daniel catered a backyard party for 70 to celebrate my son's upcoming marriage. He designed a fabulous menu and was a pleasure to deal with before the event. On the evening of the party, the temperatures were in the 90's and it was very humid and Daniel was working out of a kitchen that was barely air-conditioned. Despite these tough conditions, the food was fabulous. We had a Mediterranean platter, about six passed appetizers and beef with mashed potatoes and a fish dish with mashed potatoes served in martini glasses. We also had an assortment of delicious mini pastries, cookies and brownies for dessert. Our guests RAVED about the food and it was plentiful. We had two servers (one was Daniel's daughter) who were delightful and a bartender who was very warm and kind (guests commented on how great she was). Right before dessert, it started to rain, and we had to quickly move indoors and Daniel and his crew did this effortlessly. Daniel left the kitchen where he worked (our next neighbor's house) spotless. I would hire Daniel again in an instant - his food made the party and we got very, very, very positive feedback from all of our guests.

We cannot speak highly enough of Jen and her company, Boston Event Divas!!! She is an industry leading visionary. and our wedding day was a dream because of her. I knew from our very first phone conversation that Jen was the perfect wedding coordinator for us! She was so upbeat, funny and easy to talk to. She gave me a clear and concise outline of her services and what to expect throughout the planning process. We chose to go with a plan that allowed me to choose quite a few details (caterer, venue, rentals, flowers...etc), while Jen organized every detail into place. She also offered to take care of our floral design and arrangements, a huge bonus. We met face to face several times throughout the year and a half while planning. She was always willing to meet with me to discuss wedding details, answers questions and calm me down when I was overwhelmed due to some things not going as planned (because that will happen). Our wedding day was a dream. Not one detail was out of place. The flowers were breathtaking, simple and elegant. Jen kept everyone, and I mean everyone on schedule and where they were supposed to be. She even made my husband and I sit down for dinner at our reception so we could have the opportunity to eat (you will know how nearly impossible this is ladies and gentlemen, when it is your special day). Jen genuinely cares for her clients and their best interests. She went went above and beyond what we expected and we are so grateful for her time and services. We highly recommend Jen and Boston Event Divas to anyone looking for an exceptional wedding coordinator G.Meneses

I had a lobster bake for a group of 35. The food was delicious everyone raved that the steamers were the best they had ever tasted. Very professional and easy to work with. I really liked that she spaced out the courses and allowed us to socialize. It was not a rushed meal. I can't wait to use her services again.

Hostess Catering made our Division Holiday party so spectacular. The food was amazing, and I really appreciated the effort they put into helping us customize the menu. At the event itself, all staff were extremely professional, friendly and efficient. Everyone was raving about how much they liked the set-up and food, and the hosts (who held the event at their home in Brookline), said it was the least stressful event they'd ever been a part of. Our ONLY complaint is that, although we stressed that we had a few lactose-intolerant guests, the rice pilaf had butter in it, which we think could have been avoided and allowed for more options for the few who couldn't eat milk products. Otherwise, GREAT EVENT. Thanks ladies!

I am so happy to have come across SYB and her teaam. This is our second time using them... the first time for my parents 50th wedding anniversary and this time for my engagement party. The food is always presented beautifully and never fails to taste delicious. On top of that everyone compliments the professionalism of the staff and attentive service (hence why I hired her the second time). Soraya really takes the time to learn what I want and gives valuable input about floor plans and overall logistics that i didn't even know existed! The day of our event, my sister and I went to get out hair and nails done, while Soraya and her team handled everything. It's really stress free and she makes it more fun. I truly see Soraya as a friend after working with her! Thanks SYB, you make my parties memorable and leave my guests impressed.

I have been to many catered events over the years. We recently hired Malone catering for a family party. The food was excellent and people who attended the bash raved about the menu. Malone Catering was responsive to our requests and kept it affordable. The variety of food was only exceeded by its quality. If you are having a catered time, do yourself a favor and hire these guys! (And make sure you invite me). Gerard

Stephen is EXCELLENT! He just did my sons 1st birthday party and it ROCKED! The food was excellent, everyone is still raving about it! From the sliders, to the grilled cheese, to the tacos and the Mac n chesse. EVERYTHING was incredible! The kicker, homemade ice cream sandwiches!! I loved everything about him and his food truck SWAT! He set up and took down quick, professionaly and with style! His pricing is fair, especially for the work he did. He OVER DELIVERED! I will 100% be using him again! And will continue to spread the word about him to clients, friends and family!

Everyone had a great time and it was because of the food and the service. Highly recommended!!

The collective team at Thyme + Tide were absolutely amazing to work with. We hired them to cater our 150 person wedding, and it went off without a hitch. From the very beginning of the process, they took the time to listen, provide recommendations, deal with all of our changes, and all along the way were courteous and pleasant to work with. The wedding day itself was fabulous. We didn’t have to worry about a thing except eating all the delicious food they cooked! The food was laid out perfectly, and everything from the apps, to the main course and sides were fantastic. We had tons of great feedback from our guests. The venue owner also had great things to say about their professionalism and how wonderful of a job they did keeping things on schedule and picking up after they were done. We couldn’t ask for a better team to work with. I would recommend them in a heartbeat!

Kendra catered a 50th birthday dinner for 80 people. Her food was outstanding, beautifully presented, and absolutely fresh and delicious. Her attention to detail was noticed by all my guests who immediately took her card! The beautifully presentation means as much to Kendra as how delicious her food is. I highly recommend Kendra and her staff for all your catering needs!

I highly recommend Matt Stogryn as private Chef for parties large and small. I have worked with Matt on a Holiday Party for 100, and a dinner party for 12. Both times, Matt consulted with me with plenty of advance notice regarding menu, food restrictions, and drink pairings. Matt was on time, very organized with his prep. Matt was charming and knowledgeable when presenting each course to my guests, and the food was fantastic! Matt was clear on pricing in advance, took care of every detail. Wit Matt in the kitchen, I was able to enjoy my guests, and we all loved the food.

I know WOW Barbecue from way back; I even dined at their restaurant for a few times. I asked their customer service if they cater and they said yes. I employed them to provide food for my company’s product launch party for more than 200 guests. I contacted them 48 hours before our event, and they were able to deliver on such short notice. The owner and the customer service were very thoughtful; instead of trying to up-selling me, they tried to help me correctly estimate the number of guests and prevented me from over-ordering. Highly recommend them, definitely will hire them again!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
