Bobby tiled my bathroom floor and shower and did an amazing job! When I learned that he also had experience with brickwork, flooring and fireplace hearths, I hired him for that too. It’s obvious that Bobby knows what he is doing and that he takes great pride in his workmanship. I like that Bobby doesn’t upcharge on materials and that instead, I am able to supply my own tile and grout from a greater selection of retailers and also take advantage of any sale prices. I prefer the wide choice of available product options that this methodology offers. Bobby is reasonable in his pricing and works with your budget, he is worth every penny! In the shower, Bobby added a feature strip and an insert for shampoo bottles that looks fabulous. He also installed a sliding shower door and I was impressed with his level of care and attention to detail. Bobby communicated with me at every step - there were never any surprises - and I found him to be patient, easy going, trustworthy, professional and knowledgeable. He provided me with alternate design suggestions and I am soooo glad that I took his advice. He always protected my property and cleaned up every day after his work. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Bobby and his team, he’s a breeze to work with and I would hire him again in a nanosecond!

I booked the project with OSA just one week before I moved in my new condo. There are plenty of jobs needed to be done, like install all appliances, replace old vanity, replace all old valves, replace new toilet, install new lights, put floor tile and wall tile in my bathroom, and so on. Thankfully, OSA finished all projects before the day I moved in with high work quality, I really appreciate it. Also, they are very trustful, I gave my home key to them so they can come any time to do the work. I would definitely recommend OSA to all my friends who needs to do electricity, plumb job for their house or condo.

We had LAN's Floor Care install hardwood flooring in our kitchen and family room after they removed carpet and tile in same area. We are very happy with the results and with overall service we received. The floors look beautiful and Lan was very professional. We had him give us a quote months in advance as we were away all winter but he kept his word and saved a time for us. We would recommend Lan to any of our friends and would certainly use him again in the future! Nancy and Jack Mac

John did an excellent job laying the new tile in our basement/playroom. Worked every day til the job was completed. The tile came out excellent, nice clean straight layout, nice crisp grout lines, and cleaned the basement after completion. I washed the baseboards a second time, as I re-stained all the baseboard trim, plus the doors and window trim. All the floor edging looks amazing. Blends right up to the baseboards perfectly. I will have John back for more in the future.

Carlos and his team removed about 2000 sq ft of carpet, glued down hard wood floor, and engineered flooring in one single morning. This included skimming the floor so it is completely prepped for new installation. Carlos was extremely professional and so were the rest of his team. I would hire Carlos again, also for other project work (he also does tiling, vinyl, etc.). Highly recommended! thank you Carlos.

Ryan totally delivered for us! On his first visit to take a look at a hardwood reflooring project, he actually provided immediate written quote. We made the quick decision to hire him based on his honesty, service knowledge as evidenced by suggestions he made, follow through regarding his availability and cost, although we would have paid more after seeing finished work. Yep, I said it. He and his coworker were efficient, clean, considerate, worked like a finely tuned engine, the result of which was gorgeous flooring. I should also note that Ryan was super in terms of ease of communication throughout entire project. Ryan Dennis knows what he's doing. We will absolutely be calling on him to work on our next project! Thank you Ryan!!!

Paul and his team recently renovated our bathroom and they were fantastic! They completely gutted the bathroom, removed the bath and built a walk in shower, tiled the floor and the shower walls, applied wainscoting and installed all new fixtures as well as waterproofing our window. They helped us out with design ideas purchased the tile and other plumbing parts, waterproofed the shower and we're happy to pick up all the other items we had ordered including the shower doors. Paul and his team were always punctual and worked hard throughout the day, they even came on a Saturday to work on the bathroom so we would have it ready sooner. They cleaned up after the work was finished and took away all the trash. The quote was very reasonable. We would highly recommend Supreme Home Improvement.

Russ and his team was a pleasure to work with. He was very responsive to my inquiry (leveling my floors for a floating wood installation) and even adjusted his projects to fit my tight timeframe. He provided tips for other renovations we are doing throughout the house and even allowed up to borrow tools needed to do so. we have worked with several contractors over the last few weeks and Russ by far was the more professional.

What an INCREDIBLE job Rogerio and his crew member did! We couldn’t be happier. The basement floor before was in terrible shape (old vinyl) and needed new flooring desperately. Rogerio transformed the basement to look even better than the hardwoods upstairs, using looselay vinyl. Amazing job, I highly recommend!!! We will hire no one else for flooring in the future. Thank you!

We hired MJR for an apartment floor job, leveling many rooms, installing floor and tile in bathroom. Job was quickly quoted and work started as agreed. Work was done to expectations and even given the tight timeline MJR was able to accommodate. Workers were professional and pushed hard to get the job done. Pricing was fair and we were pleased with work. Would rehire and recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
