John did an excellent job laying the new tile in our basement/playroom. Worked every day til the job was completed. The tile came out excellent, nice clean straight layout, nice crisp grout lines, and cleaned the basement after completion. I washed the baseboards a second time, as I re-stained all the baseboard trim, plus the doors and window trim. All the floor edging looks amazing. Blends right up to the baseboards perfectly. I will have John back for more in the future.

Recently Bob Kohn helped us to remodel our basement room (aka "the dogs' room) and the laundry room. They had been done in 1980's paneling and were dark, unattractive and depressing to be blunt. With some of Bob's recommendations and his talented craftsmanship these rooms are now bright, open and welcoming. Truthfully, they are too nice to keep as the dogs' room, but my canine friends will continue to live in the new airy space! We have also added some gym equipment to the room as we need makeovers too!!! Thanks Bob. Seriously, Bob is talented, extremely professional, and cleans up daily from his work better than I clean the house!! If you have a project, need ideas or suggestions, call him. I can assure you that you will be a truly satisfied customer, as I am!!

We are remodeling our kitchen. Eduardo is an excellent communicator. He always returns our calls/text msg. Mistakes were made earlier. They forgot to seal our bedroom door during the demolition. Thankfully, Eduardo himself clean the bedroom afterward. Cement were dripping through the basement causing a mess in our basement. They promised to replace the insulation in the basement (We trust they'll keep their promise). This is our first major project. So it was a bit frustrating at first. But it's getting better as it progress. We added other little projects around the house, i.e. painting the hallway, replace doors, etc. Work is still in progress.... They do a good job so far.

Mark Dubois's Custom Carpentry did an amazing job finishing our basement. Our new space includes a 3/4 bathroom, game room and workout area. Mark even designed and built custom built-ins, making the final product exceed our expectations. Mark was in constant communication, prompt, neat (always cleaned up before leaving) and did high quality work within our budget. We also hired Mark to replace two exterior doors and repair some cracked floor tiles. Highly recommend.

Pino Construction built a two-story addition on our Newton home, including a new kitchen and master, and also finished the basement and a powder room. The work was excellent, the prices were fair, and the Pino Construction team were great guys. We have done several other projects with them, and we will continue to use them for all our contracting needs. We recommend them completely!

I had a pleasure of hiring Russell for home floor repairing job (engineered hard wood). I would highly recommend Russell for such carpentry work. Based on this fantastic experience, I would consider him for other home repair/installation jobs (gutters, storm door, etc). I had a buckled (peaked) floor due to the seller/installer not leaving enough gaps at the edges to account for expansion of hard wood during summer. I had about 6 estimates, and by far, his pricing was the most reasonable. While most people charged per job, Russell quoted me an hourly rate. Some more reasonable than others. A few were flat out reluctant to do the job, due to its small size (maybe thought it was less profitable) despite the full day needed for its completion. By giving me a ridiculous quote (similar pricing to a new floor installation), they implied they didn't want to work. The job required removing the moldings from the impacted walls, removing all of tiles, then laying them again from the problematic area. He sticks to the quote and to his estimated time. He has a good pace and doesn't linger to buy time. Also, I found him to be very personable. The job was done to the utmost satisfaction. If you want an honest, hard working man to look after your home repair jobs, this would be the guy.

The only reason why I looked into Thumbtack was because the person I hired to do the job prior fell through, so I took a chance, read the reviews and what a great choice! Very trustworthy,(gave him keys to my house) while I was at work. Did hard demo work to my bedroom ceiling , removed 30 years of wallpaper in both my bedroom and bathroom, put a new ceiling up , plastered, shim coat, painted . Don’t hesitate to use him! and the price was very reasonable. I’m planning on using him again when I finish my basement ceilings and walls.

Daniel did a large tile job in our basement. After a recent flood, we needed to replace our pergo flooring. Tile can be so expensive but Daniel worked with our budget and got the job done. We will definitely be recommending him to friends and family. I was very stressed to get the job done by Thanksgiving and Daniel promised me it would be done. It was indeed done and I couldn't be more grateful for his hard work! Thank you again!

Stan came and fixed a rotted basement sill and cracked floor joist. He went out of his way to readjust his schedule because we were on a time crunch to get some work done prior to a home inspection. The work was completed in a timely manner and the cost was more than fair. I would recommend him to family and call him in the future for any other work that we might need done.

Our Owens-Corning Basement System is fabulous. We had basement area converted to a play room and a train room. The workmanship was flawless and the people who did the work were skilled and dependable. The project has stood up perfectly—it’s as good as new more than three years later. Our grandchildren are delighted with the play space, and we are glad every day that we made this investment in our home.

It's rare to find someone who takes such pride in their work as Igor does. Great communication, punctuality, and value. Igor did more than expected and the final product is amazing. We had Igor remodel our basement after it was flooded. The work included installing new wood-look tile, drywall, plaster, paint, and new trim. After the work was done, he cleaned and made sure we were happy. He came back when we had a small area that needed some additional plaster. He is incredibly responsive and has a great attitude. We will definitely use Igor again!

What a terrific experience. We hired K&M to help us seal up the house after a mouse infestation in a brand new house. He found a ton of places to block and fixed every one. But then, when he was in the basement he noticed that we were missing insulation in the crawl space. It was not a terrific spot, and spooky. That did not stop this company! They came back the next day with the insulation, cleaned out the crawl space and removed the debris, and fixed it perfectly. Not only were these the nicest guys to deal with, but they were fair, honest, and they went out of their way to make sure we were in a safe, mouse free, dwelling. Whenever Mike Sheehan and Danny say they will be there, they will be there on time. You will get a call if there needs to be a change in time. They never left us hanging. They clearly know what they are doing in a lot of home situations from building to fixing, this company is the one to call for work that is done, done right the first time, and done professionally. We highly recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
