Anthony came on a Friday to view the work to be done. We agreed on a price and he was at my home the next morning. Both front and back yard were cleaned very quickly from an entire season worth of leaves. I would recommend his services for yard clean up to anyone.

Fantastic job by OSA Home Improvement. Elsayed began work immediately and stayed late to finish the job the same day. I had a variety of tasks that another plumber did poorly, from reinstalling several shower fixtures to fixing a drain vent to clearing out a slow water faucet. Elsayed also installed some dimmer switches for me at a reasonable price. He is friendly and polite and works very hard to solve your problem for you. I look forward to working with him again!

I needed the entire siding and large 2 level deck with railings power washed badly as my home was used as a rental for 4 years while I was out of the country. Steve and his assistant showed up on time and while I wasn't home at the time, my wife says he was very sweet and professional. When I got home I couldn't help but notice that the house and deck had been transformed to virtually brand new exterior status. I would use Green Guys without reservation for the next power washing.

It was so nice coming home to a clean home after being away from two months. With grandkids living here, it was great not have to worry about having to clean after flying home from Singapore. Everything looked fantastic! I was really thankful for GMP hard work!!

Steve and his co-worker, Phil, did a terrific job. I could not be more pleased with everything about the service he provided. This includes his competitive pricing, timely performance, attention to detail and problem-solving when adjustments had to be made to accommodate an irregular basement floor and fieldstone foundation wall, and perhaps most of all working in difficult conditions and extreme heat. I cannot say enough about how pleased I was. I look forward to his continued involvement throughout the renovation of our 160-year home.

Edilson arrived on time and completed the job quickly and neatly. He tiled the floor in my bathroom and replaced a roof on my porch. Both jobs required a lot of work in preparation since my vanity needed to be removed and the old roof on the porch needed to be removed as well. Ed did a great job and was fast but precise. He also installed a new toilet for me even though it was not part of the plan and waited while I went to Home Depot to get it! I would recommend Ed any one I know who has a home improvement project to complete. Arlene T.

Jason did a phenomenal job at about 1/3 the cost of other quotes I received. He installed electrical outlets above two wood burning fireplaces, mounted a 55 TV above one of them, including threading the A/V wires horizontally across the wall and across studs, and added a few other new outlets throughout the house. I had a bunch of home theatre companies come out and tell me how complicated my TV mounting job was going to be and gave me absurd timetables and quotes. Jason came by and completed all the jobs perfectly in 6 hours. Also, unlike other electricians that I’ve had, Jason didn’t make a mess and spackled all the holes in the wall. I highly recommend Jason and will definitely hire him again for my next job (recessed and exterior lighting).

I highly recommend Felipe and his crew. I needed a new closet built in a bedroom that didn't already have one. Felipe did an excellent, professional job, and I then hired him to paint the walls and trim in the room. It looks beautiful! Very professional work, good communication, excellent pricing, and left everything neat and clean at the end of each day. I am recommending FW Home Improvement to my family and friends, and will hire them again when I need work done.

Eduardo and his team did an amazing job on our dormer addition/bathroom renovation. Its difficult renovating and building in an occupied home and he and his crew were nothing but gentlemanly, respectful and kind. They kept the house and work space as clean as possible and were very respectful of our private space. The project fell directly within the schedule allotted in our contract and true to his word, there were zero changes orders even as we adjusted elements along the way. Eduardo himself is a very easy person to work with. He is always available and will respond to any concern or need any time of the day or night. If you’ve ever done any sort of renovation, I don’t think there’s anything more highly to compliment than responsiveness and Eduardo scores a 10 in that category. The end result is the bathroom we dreamed off, inside and out. The tile work is amazing and we are equally impressed with the exterior finishing and detailed time spent matching the new to old on our 1890’s home. We would not hesitate to contact Boston Best Construction for future projects, knowing the time and attention we would receive. Other details of our renovation including pictures can be found at www.birdsofberwick.com Thank you, Eduardo!

Mark installed new windows in my 1850 home, and we had to coordinate with a moving company so that they were there at exactly the same time. Mark was easy to work with, and responsive to the schedule changes, and installed my windows beautifully and at a reasonable price, I wiuld highly recommend his company!

As a real estate professional and homeowner I look for quality workmanship, dependability and a fair price when I need a contractor for my own home improvements or to recommend to my clients. Troy always met or exceeded my expectations, and I can trust his opinion and recommendations for myself and my clients. He had high professional and ethical standards which adds value in my book!

RJ Development delivered impeccable service. I admit I was hesitant based on a negative review previously written, however the way Rich followed up with me, and answered all my questions really put me at ease. He took the time to come to our home to clarify what was needed. He kept to the pricing. This is a very nice contractor and very personable. I would recommend him without hesitation!

We hired Godek Home Improvement to restore a turn of the century desk. Mr. Godek researched the era in which the desk was made, shared the history of its manufacturing and restored the desk to its appropriate history. We are very pleased with desk and would use Godek Home Improvement in the future.

I am a disabled veteran on a very very fixed income. I needed extensive contracting work done to my home. New doors, new roof, new windows, and new floors. Ray did a stellar job, he knew of my limited income and worked with me every step of the way. He has a rough exterior but a completely professional work ethic. I would recommend him to anyone needing a great contractor at a very reasonable price.

Hermano was very responsive (first to respond out of 2) and gave a decent range of cost to estimate well. He came the next day, looked at the problem and gave a very good sense that he could both handle the job and anything that might come up related to this. The work was done while we were not home and everything looks great.

We hired Russell to build a new newel post for our stairwell and install a new railing and spindles. We had sawed off the old newel post during a home construction project a year ago and did not have a picture or materials from the prior post. Russell was able to create a beautiful newel post from scratch which looks better than anything we could have bought in store. He was also committed to ensuring that the style of the post, railing, and spindles matched with our house. At our request, Russell returned to adjust something according to our wishes and even made suggestions to make the whole thing look even better. Russell was professional, honest, and came in at a great price. We appreciated his patience and willingness to deliver a product that we loved. We enjoyed working with Russell and love our new stair railing and hope to use him for future house projects!

I have been a customer of Ken at Rainstone since 2015. And this past month a new job had us moving out of state. Ken was able to give our home his 100% attention, our wood floors repaired & refinished, broken wood replaced and matched to perfection. Our decks, walls, floors... our whole house is move in ready, thanks to the quality of work he and his employees deliver.

Jon removed my old retaining wall and stairs and built me a new one in about a week. What I like most about Jon is that he built me exactly what I asked for and nothing less. He didn’t pressure me into purchasing higher quality materials or try to increase the scope of work for his benefit as all the other contractors had. He showed up and did the work without me ever being home and charged a reasonable fee. What I hate most about hiring a contractor is the idea of paying a large sum of money to a random guy who showed up to your house promising the world only to never hear from him again. That obviously was not the case with Jon. I honestly don’t think he asked for a dime until a large portion of the job was complete. If you want someone that will show up, do the work at a reasonable price, and always return your call, I recommend Jon.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
