Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

I just had Robs Painting Inc. fix and paint two rooms in my house. I was so impressed at how quickly and efficiently they got the job done. I had ceilings that needed to be repaired and repainted from water damage and they did a fantastic job. I would definitely recommend Robs Painting Inc to anyone looking to repaint their house, and we have rehired them for another project coming up.

I was very happy with how quick they came for an estimate and how quick and efficient they were. I asked for a couple extra things painted and it was not a problem, minor things like a few extra pieces of trim. I would hire Hernández painting again and recommend them.

Rainbow Painting recently painted my living room, kitchen and dining room. They were very responsive with my initial inquiry and always very professional. Their quote was the best compared to some other quotes I received. The quality of work provided was immaculate. The rooms came out perfect and they did an amazing job cleaning up after themselves. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a painter and I plan on using them again in the near future to paint my kitchen cabinets.

Roland did an amazing job painting our home office. We live in a typical New England home that was built in the 1800s and it needed a lot of prep work. He want above and beyond what we expected by painting doors and even a radiator that was in bad shape. He was quick, professional, and made sure he didn't cut on quality while still giving us a very fair price. Our room looks beautiful and we will be hiring Roland for the other rooms in our house.

Valerie was just an amazing person. On time, clean, very pleasant. Fun to have around. She was spotless. She did 3 rooms plus trimmings and ceilings and some doors in less than 2 days. Not one drop of paint spilled on floors or furniture. Impeccable! Would surely reccomend to anyone. Her prices are hard to beat. Love, love my rooms. Coming back for more work. Great job Valerie!!!!

I have to start off by saying the quality and the workmanship was quite remarkable. I had my cabinets priced by 5 different Pros and got a variety prices. GHI came to my house and gave me an in depth explanation of what his price included. This wasn't just a cabinet paint job but rather an entire refinishing project with a full warranty. When everyone else offered 6 moths, he offered more. So I decided to take a chance and spend a little more for quality work, a decision that I did not come to regret. The refinishing job they did was amazing! GHI said the job would take 5 days and they were true to their word. My wife and I are amazed at how the cabinets turned out. It is so refreshing to come home to a new kitchen for about a 1/3 of the price of a full renovation. In the end, it was totally worth it to spend a little more now oppose to spending money now and having to spend much more a few years down the road. Thank you Nilso of GHI Fine Painting and Stains.

I liked Troy from the moment I met him. I hired him almost immediately and he waited a few months while I had other things done. When I was ready to have my place painted, he was still interested to do the job. His work was excellent, he took very good care of my furnishings by covering everything and put down drop cloths on my hardwood floors. When he was done, he cleaned everything up and helped me move furniture back to its place. I would highly recommend Troy. No need to look for anyone else. He is the real deal! Friendly, professional and meticulous! Thank you Troy!
