Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

The sale agent came but didn’t deliver the quote as promised due to the fact that I was not present. I work an hour away and could not make it on time to the appointment. As this was for a siding and roofing quote, I told the agent he had the permission to take the measurements. He took the measurements but didn’t send the quote. After contacting the company, the owner promptly apologized and made the agent keep his promise. The owner said that it is preferable for the company to meet the homeowner in person in order to avoid a trespassing charge. The quote was delivered and was very competitive. Although I did not go with H&R roofing, I give the company a 4 star review and hope that this experience help both the company and future customers.

I interviewed 3 of their prior customers that were very happy with roof replacements. Initially they gave me an estimate that was low relative to competitors. But under the top layer of shingles they found a layer of slate that is heavy and would had torn their tarp that protects the side of the house. So they asked for $1,500 more after I had already signed and given 50% deposit. When starting the job they accidentally broke one my tenants' AC but they paid for the damages. Also the neighbor was a bit concerned about her yard since my property was close to the property line. In the end they did a good job of cleaning up and from the videos the roof looks good. They also replaced a piece of siding at my primary residence. They left a small area uncovered though. They keep asking me to write them a review. I was hesitate at first because I didn't want to anger them with a review that is short of 5 stars. But now after 2 weeks since the roof was replaced my tenants complained to me that the dumpster is still at the site and it smells because people have been throwing their garbage in it.

Thank you H & R.! The guys did a great job on our home. They worked quickly and professionally, taking care of our home in less than a day. I was worried because this house was estate sale and had been neglected for several years--it looks great now. They were not the cheapest quote, but they were one of the few to carry worker's comp--yes, that's a big deal. Also they were the only ones to get up on the roof and assess the situatioin without relying on an app. They were the only company to give me a complete quote that covered everything I asked about--gutters, downspouts, roof, chimney flashing, ridge vent, 36 soffit vents, facia boards, and extra attention to a flat area that needed a rubber roof. They were honest abut the condition and told us to expect that parts of the decking would need to be replaced. We were fairly treated and not at all pressured to 'sign now' go further than our budget allowed. I'll be calling H & R in the future and look forward to working with them again when we need work done on the siding and windows.

Jose responded to my request right away and was out at my property the very next day. From the time he took assessing the work needed and actually getting it done, it was about 3 hours with before and after pictures of what he did. Highly recommend and will be contacting him for any roofing needs.

These guys were incredible! They kept me informed every step of the way. They showed up promptly and worked very long days. The quality of work is outstanding. Because City Hall was closed due to COVID, there was a slight delay in having the permit issued. However, Jose called me every day to keep me informed - he called me daily. I can't say enough about the job these guys did. These guys are honest and hardworking, which you don't see much of in the roofing trade. I would highly recommend them!

The entire experience went well. Jeff was very personable and easy to work with throughout the entire process. It took a long time for them to start because mother nature was not cooperating , but he communicated with me all the time and kept me in the loop. Once it finally stopped raining and it was just warm enough they started the job on a Sunday and I was vey impressed. The guys were very respectful and efficient. They worked quickly and got most of the job done that day! They were here early the next morning to complete the job. Once they were done they cleaned up and it never looked like they were ever here. My new roof looks awesome and now I dint have to worry anymore! Jeff and his crew were a great group of guys and I would definitely recommend them to anyone!
