After talking to Bespoke Editorial I decided that my book was not ready for copy editing. Sabrina suggested that I take my book to a develop editor,or try to get feed back from writing community groups. I went to a writing meet up, and I was not satisfied. All the feedback I got was that the book is too dense. Sabrina explained what this meant and then pitched the idea of a manuscriptevaluator being the strategic decision to do to see if the book was ready for copy editing. From there she recemmended three developmental editors who do manuscript evaluating. She even gave me the rate they would charge.

Amenah did excellent job. I needed to have someone edit my resume and write a cover letter to apply for a specific job. I sent my previous resume to her and she then got back to me with a few questions on it to write my resume and cover letter better. The outcome was great. I loved my new resume and cover letter. She is responsive and on time. Highly recommended.

I had the opportunity of working with Kevin. I have found his reviews and remarks to be thought provoking. Often as we write, we do not place ourselves in the shoes of the readers. Kevin considers the tone and platform of the writer as well as the reader and makes his recommendations on how the writer can improve their work. I would call him the antibiotic of editing. He works his way through the literature and diagnose those issues and prescribe a remedy to correct the issues. I would highly recommend him. Thanks Dr. Raymond Holmes, GCDF

Laurie has edited many of my documents over the past 20 + years. She is professional, talented, creative, and has an excellent eye for detail. She has provided substantive copyediting and proof-reading for many of my published articles and professional papers. She also developed and regularly updates my PowerPoint presentations and hand-outs, that I use at conferences throughout the US and Europe, often adding Excel charts, or suggesting diagrams and exhibits, to more clearly describe a concept. Her work has also included reorganizing and editing my professional resume and detailed application, which helped me receive a Fulbright Scholarship. She is responsive, and diligent to make sure it meets all the requirements. I highly recommend Laurie Cohen for editorial services.

Valentia and company designed a first class site for me at a reasonable rate. I hated the "cookie cutter" sites that are so common on the web and wanted to stand out. Valencia created an awesome logo and site design for me, as well as made some great editing suggestions for my wording. The entire FatCat crew is very responsive, something you can only get from a smaller company. If you go with FatCat, you won't regret it.

Nancy Halsey has written grants for our organization for almost 10 years. She has exceptional writing and editing skills. After Nancy wrote a particular grant, the foundation called me to say it was the best well-written grant they had received. I have never received a phone call like that before. Nancy is professional and honest; she uses research and wisdom when writing grants and talking with employees. I highly recommend her for any writing opportunities that you may have. L. Dr. Kahn has assisted me by editing many documents including: my law school entrance application/essays, professional resume, and emails to potential employers. She has a keen eye for editing and restructuring documents and is a master in the art of communication. There have been numerous instances she has helped me translate thoughts, arguments or ideas onto paper so that they perfectly reflect what I spent so long struggling to come up with words for myself. As a lawyer with a very proficient communication skillset myself, that is saying a LOT! It also helps that Dr. Kahn has been a pleasure to work with on every occasion. I highly recommend Dr. Kahn for all levels of editing and writing one might need!

Jane Dudgeon helped me revise and produce an effective and impressive resume. She started by carefully reviewing my current resume, and then she and I talked about ways to improve the wording and formatting. She made some great suggestions about how to change the duties and descriptions into substantial accomplishments. Jane went through it to ensure everything was correct including grammar, spelling and punctuation. She is a good listener, makes good suggestions and works quickly. Not only did Jane demonstrate great experience in reviewing an existing resume into a great resume, she also talked with me about how to market this new resume so that it leads to interviews. She gave some wonderful suggestions about how to revise my LinkedIn Profile so that it reflects my skills, experience and accomplishments. I would recommend Jane to anyone who needs a professional review and editing of an existing resume. And I think Jane can provide valuable ideas about job hunting and how to market a resume.

            Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

            • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
            • Strong writing skills.
            • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
            • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
            • Expertise in your target area.
            • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

            • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
            • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
            • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
            • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
