Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How do you find a good carpenter?

To find a good carpenter near you, do the following:

  • Use Thumbtack to find a list of carpenters in your area.
  • Filter the list by selecting a specific carpentry service, such as general carpentry or cabinetry.
  • Identify carpenters who have high ratings.
  • View the carpenters’ profiles and learn more about their specialties.
  • Read their customer reviews and look at photos of their past work.

After you get a good sense of their quality of work, make sure the carpenter has the necessary credentials in your state. Then, request several cost estimates for your project(s).

Brand new deck! Our previous deck was rotted and falling apart. Saul was able to not only create a new deck with more space for our row-home but also stay within our limited budget for the project. We are enjoying our brand new deck and I would heartily recommend Saul for your next home renovation/improvement project.

Deck wonders did a very good job on my deck. It was in bad repair and they made it look beautiful; cleaning, sanding and coating to protect it for years to come. They were also very reasonably priced, and I had gotten several estimates before I chose them. Thank you Deck Wonders.

Jose is great!! I purchased a home with a roof deck that needed repairs-the previous owner hadn’t taken care of the deck in years. Jose is very responsive, punctual, and always messages back quickly. Jose and his team replaced boards, railings, tightened railings and corners, and made my deck stair system much more secure. They powerwashed and did an excellent job of staining. They even powerwashed my parking pad for me. I was really impressed with this work, and Jose’s pricing is very very reasonable. My deck is great now-I would use him again!

Micheal and his crew arrived bright and early on a weekend to prep and stain my deck. They actually did it "old school" with brushes so it was a long process especially with a row house roof top deck. My finished deck reflects the painstaking process as its one of best looking on the block now. The old saying still stands, you get what you pay for and I'm glad I went with Micheal and his crew.

Rob was great to work with. He helped us replace our deck - which was falling apart at the seams. This was my first time using Thumbtack as well. He came over, talked through what we were looking for, and then emailed us a quote confirming what we talked about. We scheduled the work a couple weeks out, and voila! - two days after starting work, we had a brand new deck. The work was done with neat detailing, Rob's crew cleaned up after themselves and seemed to really enjoy their work. The price point was appropriate for the work, and the deck replacement was a very positive and un-stressful experience. We are very happy with our deck, and would recommend Rob to others.

Jose and his team did a really GREAT job fixing our deck. We had recently bought the house and needed our deck repaired to make it safe and usable - within a budget. They replaced the stairs and boards that were rotting. They stained/painted it to make it all look the same color! They even included painting our fence and back gate. We are so happy and grateful with the work his team did. They’re painting/touching up our front porch rails next! (Check out our before-after pictures! No more embarrassing deck!)

I reached out to G&G on a Friday evening and their crew started repairing my deck on the following Tuesday morning. Thanks for the quickness during a busy season!!! My deck was definitely in bad shape before G&G arrived. The G&G’s team was responsive; I really appreciate businesses that text. G&G worked within my budget. I am satisfied with G&G’s services and will definitely reach out to them for services in the future.

Billy was always very good about emailing, texting and returning my calls. He also went out of his way to pick up deck stain for me, when there was an issue with the color Lowes provided. That said, the overall quality of his deck staining job was much less than I was hoping for. There are a lot of brush marks, unstained areas, and areas where two coats should have been used rather than one because you can still clearly see the base color. I am sure Billy would be good to work with on projects where detail is less of an issue, but for any more complicated painting; railings, trim, etc I do not think I would recommend him.

Tony powerwashed our decks (1st floor, 2nd floor and rooftop) and sealed/waterproofed them. This was a BIG job (by city standards) and he took care of it in just a few days (to allow for drying time). Very reliable and very reasonably priced. He did an excellent job and you could tell he cares about the quality of his work. Highly recommend!!

I am experiencing problems with my paint on my deck. Contacted Jose and he promosed to address the issue and that was almost three weeks ago. I gave him a great review after job completion, but I should have waited and not been so quick to do so. I am very disappointed in him. Thought he was better then that. I am experiencing the paint blistering or bubbling (do not know how to describe it). Funny, he was out real quick to collect money. Very upset.
