"Chef Chris Spear is in one word, amazing. If I didn't limit myself to one word, I'd also add in: incredible, talented, entertaining, knowledgeable, friendly, intelligent, thoughtful, creative, and brilliant. My wife and I just had our third son a month prior, and it was her birthday and we were not able to go out and celebrate due to the wonderful chaos of having a new little one tethered to mom. Chris was able to bring more than just the restaurant experience to us with this incredible service he provides. We learned new cooking techniques, flavor combinations, recipes that are easy for weekly meal making with little-to-no time, and more. As advertised, Chris brought everything: the ingredients, the dishes, the serving ware, the napkins and place settings; EVERYTHING. And then he took it all home with him. Chris spent almost a solid 5 hours with us and never made us feel rushed or hurried throughout the whole experience. He explained all his dishes, discussed the ingredients with us, gave us his perspective and thoughts on the dish, all while giving us stories about his own personal life and family and how he got to where he is today. He clearly loves what he does and it shows through on the food. My wife and I cannot wait to remake the dishes, and have already started looking at new cookware that Chris recommended. Chris even gave us links and recommendations for recipes that were not part of the meal experience we had signed up for. Chris clearly cares about the food and experience first, which is beyond refreshing and hopefully what helps set him above other chefs. We have told both of our entire families and friends about this experience and could not recommend Chris more. I hope people believe us and take the opportunity to have a similarly amazing experience with Chris. Ours was truly a great experience, and for that, the least we can do is say THANK YOU to Chef Chris!"

"On a whim, I decided to use Thumbtack to find a caterer for my mom's 72nd birthday party. OMG. I am SOOOO glad that I did!! I have planned a number of parties in my day, and I have yet to find one with such great professionalism and wonderful customer service I experienced with AC Catering. First off, they can fix just about anything!! While I had a basic menu in mind, I was forced to rethink things based on the wide variety of options presented by AC Catering. Other caterers wanted me to come up with the menu initially without giving me an idea of their speciality items. With AC Catering, you can get ANYTHING from breakfast, lunch, dinner..including smoked pit grilled items. So, I contacted them with my initial thoughts for a menu. Within 2 days, I received a proposal from the owner, George. Pricing was perfect, even with delivery. Additionally, they provide utensils, plates, condiments, etc. I was pleased. I had to make a last minute change. George was able to accommodate my request with no hassle. I called him just to make sure this change wouldn't pose a problem. He said "No worries. I got you." And, he wasn't kidding. So, party day comes. I'm a bit nervous because I never tasted the food or visited his brick and mortar store. However, the previous reviews from Thumbtack customers were all stellar. After meeting George in person, I totally understand why the reviews are so stellar. George is extremely pleasant and engaging. He arrived on time and was totally prepared to set up everything. He shared some jokes with my brother. Gave compliments to the birthday girl. He even shared the history about his family business. This party was for 50+ people. So, everything had to be right. Let me just say that George and his team didn't disappoint! The greens (with smoked turkey), baked beans and rice were EXCELLENT. I've eaten a lot of rice in my day. But, can I tell you how fabulous the yellow rice is? Very delicious. For meats, I ordered bbq chicken and burgers. Again, everything was wonderful. You would think burgers would just be bland and lacking flavor. NOT AC Catering burgers. They were thick, juicy, and seasoned well. More than enough food was provided. In fact, I had to encourage guests to take home plates of food. The deviled eggs were tasty. However, they were a bit messy due to lots of filling. But, it was totally fine. My guests put the smash on them. All throughout the event, everyone had positive comments and asked "who catered the food?" I didn't hesitate to tell them about George and AC Catering. I HIGHLY recommend them. In fact, I'm trying to find another excuse to celebrate so I can utilize them again!! Thank you, George, for making my mom's birthday so great. You will be hearing from me again. May your catering business continue to grow. God Bless you and your family."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
