Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it better to repair or replace a roof?

It depends on the severity of the damage. If a falling branch or a windstorm damages an isolated patch of shingles, you could probably repair it. However, if the underlayment is damaged or if the whole roof is showing signs of wear, you might need to replace it.

Always have a professional roofer near you assess the roof before making a decision.

Can a handyman repair a roof?

A handyman may be able to repair simpler problems on a roof, such as damaged shingles or gutters. However, it’s important that you hire a pro who’s properly trained and skilled to handle your roof repairs. When in doubt, research the licensing requirements in your state, and review several handymen and roofers before making a decision.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

It only took Chris a short time to reply to my request for a roof repair. He was at my house within 24 hours of speaking with him. Despite the cold and snowy weather, Chris personally came to my residence to inspect the roof leak. Due to the weather, it had to wait a couple of days until we got a break from the snow. However, Chris stayed in close contact through the week, giving me plenty of heads-up of when the work would get done. One of his employees arrived to for the repair the very day is stopped snowing and was extremely respectful, polite and personable. It was my first time using Conrad Consulting & Remodeling and I'm glad I did. After living in Grand Rapids for a short time, I think I found who I'll be doing business with here on out! What a great experience!

I am under the impression when you hire someone to repair damage it will be quality repaired / replaced back to the original quality. In my case I had a limb fall and damage the peek of my roof (handful of shingles / drip edge). Some shingles were replaced / nailed back in place and said if I have problems call them back. But when I asked why would you piece together the drip edge in two places and not put a full piece if the length is available. The answer I received was (because we only had three pieces with us, it is repaired). So it is pieced together and there are a couple of noticeable dents in it that was obvious and pointed out by Erick. I would not say it was quality workmanship, I am not pleased. Great personalities and they "repaired" the day after I called. I was hoping I had found someone to remodel my bathroom but if there is not pride in the work performed you get what you get. Photos attached are their photos of the finished job on the west side which received the most damage. There was one shingle replaced on the west side but you can see the crushed / rolled damaged shingles were not replaced and the drip edge was pieced together in two places. (The facia is original and pieced because of length in the photo)The east side of shingle replacement appears to be excellent ? But the drip edge is dented and pieced together.
