Nick replaced a part in our Bosch dishwasher. The first person who came seemed puzzled by the Bosch, couldn't even get it our from under the countertop. We were considering the costs of removing tiles from the kitchen floor to allow the machine to slide out. We decided to pay another service charge to get "a second opinion." When Nick arrived, he pointed out two screws that were holding the dishwasher in place. Once those were removed, the dishwasher slid right out. Nick figured out what was wrong, ordered the part, installed it and voila! We got his card and will be hiring him to do some drywall repair in a couple of months. We highly recommend him.

Caulking in shower, replacing wood and weather stripping on garage, replaced weather stripping for front door, secured some loose tiles, filled a seam in my granite countertop, added some grout to backsplash, fixed closet doors so they could open and close smoothly. Tom did a great job on everything in a timely matter, very reasonable price, trust worthy, and very personable. We will definitely refer him out and will use him for other repairs!

I don’t think there are enough good things I can say about the crew at Simply Floors. Michael is very professional, personable and quite knowledgeable when it comes to the subject of flooring, answering all of my questions before and after all the work was done. The crew, Cody and Joel, were great; punctual, professional, knowledgeable, extremely accommodating, and demonstrated meticulous workmanship. Honestly, if I could have given them six stars, I would have. I hired Michael and his crew to refinish the oak floor in my 1955 ranch home. The job was relatively straightforward - the floor itself was in very good initial condition, but it was original and in need of refinishing. I received several quotes from different contractors. And while the quote from Simply Floors wasn’t the cheapest, I felt the most comfortable with Michael and his crew after our initial meeting. Michael is extremely knowledgeable with it comes to flooring (I’ve laid and refinished hardwood flooring before, so I’m familiar with what the job entails) and he was more than willing to work with my schedule. What really impressed me was that Simply Floors was the only contractor who was willing to help minimize the annoying squeaks and creaks by shimming the floor from below (my basement is unfinished so that made it easy to do). No other contractor was willing to even discuss it, let alone attempt it. This speaks volumes as to the level of service Simply Floors are willing to provide. Michael’s crew - Cody and Joel - arrived on time as scheduled, and got to work without hesitation. And watching them work was like watching a choreographed ballet. They both knew exactly what needed to be done with few words between them, and never once got in each other’s way. When I initially embarked on having my floor refinished I was on the fence as to whether I wanted a stained or natural finish. Joel mixed several stains and applied test strips so I could make my decision. I ended up going with an ebony stain with a satin finish, and the results are absolutely incredible! The job itself took a day longer than originally anticipated, but that was the fault of the weather - high humidity has a tendency to prolong the drying time of polyurethane. Despite this, Joel came out on a weekend to buff and apply the final coat of polyurethane in an effort to finish the job as quickly as possible. And as you'd expect from any professional service, when the crew left, they cleaned up after themselves and left my home just as clean and clutter-free as it was when they arrived. All in all, my experience with Simply Floors was simply great, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone!

I initially contacted them to get my hardwood and tile cleaned, I ended up getting my airducts cleaned, convincing myself it would be worth it not knowing if the previous owners ever cleaned the ducts. Let me just tell you, it was worth every penny! There was probably a whole sheet of broken up drywall in my ducts. I can't wait to have them come back and clean my tile/grout and hardwood! Very pleased with Adam and his crew! I highly recommend them!

I have to start by saying how impressed l was with Tom and his work. He did tile work for me among other projects. I hired Tom based on my first impression over the phone, and his knowledge and professionalism when we met. But what really sealed the deal was his numerous positive reviews. The reviews did not disappoint. From start to finish he was a class A act. Not only was his work exceptional, he went above and beyond to make sure that I would be happy with the outcome. His professionalism and quality of work is to be commended. I would highly recommend Tom, and l look forward to working with him again on future projects.

I hired Jam Restoration to replace plumbing fixtures, a vanity and install a shower stall, etc. in a rental property that I own. David was prompt in his response and his quote was reasonably priced. After work began he agreed to add a couple more items I requested (an additional toilet replacement and new flooring.) The additional work was reasonably priced as well. He began the work when he said he would and it was completed in a timely manner. When I mentioned one item that needed a minor tweak, he came out and addressed it. Overall I'm pleased with how things turned out including the tile work around the shower stall, as well as the toilet and vanity recommendations. I will consider Jam Restoration for future work. Thanks.

Granite Squared did ceramic tyle in my landing that looks like wood planks, granite counter tops in my bathroom and kitchen and the glass tile backsplash in my kitchen. I was worried about having a seam in my granite counter but Nick did a great job with the seam and you have to really look hard to find the seam.

I've hired Top Jimmy Construction to handle many projects over the years. Mike has personally handled 2 of my rental units, my house and even my mother's home. There have been a wide array of projects that he has handled... Two full kitchen remodels (cabinets counters, and floors), tile work in utility rooms and a Florida room. Interior molding/trim/door work. External entryway replacement, plus various electrical and plumbing projects. Not only has he done excellent work, he is dependable! I, have dealt with numerous contractors over the years, I go back to Top Jimmy Construction almost on the communication alone. The reasonable rates really make repeat business a no-brainer!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.
