My son wasn't doing too well in math, I hired Ben for about a year or more to help improve my son's grade. Ben made math/ algebra easier for my son and his grade went from a D to a B-. I am very pleased with the results. I plan on hiring Ben to help with Science soon. I highly reccomend him for tutoring.

I found Jon via Craigslist, but do not let that deter you. Right from the start he was timely in communicating with me, setting up a fare rate for tutoring services and always flexible with scheduling. As an individual who recognizes academia is not my area of expertise, Jon never made me feel that way. He is able to break down complex concepts to simple ideas that helped me to learn and retain information. I am very happy with the progress I have made (I got an A in my class!) and with how this tutoring experience has developed my capacities beyond the scope of the class. I am able to say this because I had 2 other tutors and did not have the academic and personal success as I did after working with Jon. I encourage you to reach out to Jon today.

Alex has a real talent for explaining concepts in a way that is heard and understood by my boys. He has taught them each various music lessons and music theory as well as tutoring for math and language. My boys say they feel smarter after their sessions with Alex. Thank you, Alex, for being conscientious and serious about tutoring.

Laura has been working with my daughter since September and has done an EXCELLENT job! She is very easy to coordinate times with and flexible with last minute changes. She has helped my daughter to understand concepts and problems and has been an integral part of my daughter testing out of her Geometry class. I highly recommend Laura to anyone needing help in math. She is patient, skilled and able to "get through" to children to help them grasp the material.

Maggie tutored my daughter, Katie, in high school math. It was a subject my daughter had a great deal of difficulty in. Maggie was able to make the subject relevant and engage my daughter in the learning process. Katie's grades and understanding of the subject improved during her time with Maggie. She still speaks highly of Maggie and remembers her tutoring time fondly.

Aaron Felty tutored me in Algebra when I was having trouble keeping up in class. He was extremely knowledgable, patient and personable. The light-hearted atmosphere of our sessions allowed for me to better understand the information without creating the distraction of stress. I don't believe I would've passed the class without his help.

I have a B.S. Degree in Mathematics with an emphasis in Actuarial Science and use math every day. About

I tutor math students at public libraries, on either short-term or long-term basis. I also tutor other subjects, including topics ranging from chemistry to history. I am a semi-retired MN licensed teacher. Please send an inquiry, and I will send you an electronic flyer with my background.

About

I provide one-on-one math tutoring sessions for any skill level. I often work with college and graduate students, but I work well with younger audiences as well. I also work with a lot of professionals who are looking for an expansion of their Mathematics abilities.

About

I love teaching math. I make sure that the students thoroughly understand each concept by repeatedly giving them different scenarios to test if they have really grabbed the concept. I identify their weak areas and works to eliminate them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
