Higher Mark Tutors work with both of our daughters. We could not be more pleased with the quality of work with both of them. Micah has been super easy to coordinate times with and has a rapport with both girls, ages 18 & 14, that makes their time with him not only productive but also not boring (that is from the oldest!). Micah also brings to light other ways we can help the girls and is very communicative about their progress. We highly recommend them!!

Finally, the school year is done. Phew…what a year it was for us. Our 7th grader(Going to 8th this fall), Shresht struggled for the first half of the year with Math. He used to get all stressed out and it was affecting his personality. And then we found this personal tutor Jon….Jon was a god sent. Jon has been a wonderful tutor and a great influence on Shresht. Shresht would look forward to meeting with Jon each week and work together on problem-solving….he helped him to start liking math. Shresht completed the school year with good grades and has decided to pursue the CBE based test-out this summer. So if all goes well, he should be doing Pre-Calc in 8th grade. We are very happy and wanted to put it out, just in case, this could help other kids/parents.

I have had two kids tutor with Andy over the past couple of years. He has been fantastic. Most recently, he taught my daughter an entire year of Geometry over a three month period so that she could test out of it at her private high school. She can now take pre-calculus next year as a high school sophomore. I would highly recommend Andy. He is easy to schedule with, has the ability to simplify complicated math concepts for the kids, and is a genuinely nice guy! Truly the best.

Mark was my 5th grade teacher and was one of my favorite teachers. He really cares about individual kids. He saw I was more advanced than my peers and so he gave me the opportunity to learn about computer programming to give me a challenge and to fill up the extra time I had in class when I finished before everyone else. He really sees potential in everyone and helps you get there. Now I'm an attorney who negotiates software licenses so I'm grateful for the little intro to programming he gave me. I hope my kids can get teachers and tutors like him who will challenge them and inspire them to try hard things. He has my highest recommendation as an educator.

Laura has been working with us this past school year and the results have been great! She is an excellent tutor who is able to break down concepts, displays patience with the student and reinforces in our son his ability to comprehend math. If you are looking for someone who will give you personal professional tutoring, she is a great choice!

Gail is a skilled tutor and brings a thoughtful and caring approach to reading. She is a natural at bringing in elements of fun into her lessons that have become really engaging for our son. Our son started working with Gail in 3rd grade and was several reading levels behind l. He did not feel confident in his ability, and reading became a real struggle. Working with Gail through a progression of sessions has been such a rewarding and positive experience. Our son has improved in his reading by leaps and bounds, jumping several reading levels over several months. Most importantly he genuinely loves working with Gail, she brings in games and other fun ways to build confidence and aptitude. We have continued to work with Gail, and now our son looks forward to going to the library and reading on his own. Gail has been invaluable in our life and has made reading enjoyable again. I would highly recommend Gail and truly can't say enough good about her or the impact she has made on our family.

Aaron Felty tutored me in Algebra when I was having trouble keeping up in class. He was extremely knowledgable, patient and personable. The light-hearted atmosphere of our sessions allowed for me to better understand the information without creating the distraction of stress. I don't believe I would've passed the class without his help.

I am a student at Hamline University entering my junior year. I am studying chemistry and secondary education to become a high school chemistry teacher. I have had five years of experience in tutoring students ranging from third grade up to freshman in college in math, reading and science. I am able to help students without giving them the answer and make them think critically about the process they are working through. This critical thinking will be able to be applied in students' future education and occupations.

Lots of writing experience, formal education through 1 year of graduate school at University of Iowa Playwriting Workshop; BA from University of Wisconsin at Green Bay, English and the Humanities with emphasis on Creative Writing. Last year I edited the thesis of a 2013 graduate of Hamline University, who received an MFA in Creative Nonfiction. I'm an avid reader, I love The New Yorker and am able to work especially with teens, as I love my nieces and the time we spend together at school functions, mostly performances of plays and poetry slams, also Poetry Out Loud competitions. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
