Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Andrew and Jeremiah did great work on our backsplash. The quality of work and professionalism were second to none. We are already scheduling our fireplace to be tiled by “entriquit tile designs”. 5 stars!

AJ and his brother Jemere arrived on time every day, and even started the project early so it would be done for my 50th Birthday party. It was a tough tile job in a 110 year old stone shirtwaist home, and my kitchen had 3 fridges to move and tile under. These guys have reasonable prices and get the job done!

We have been working on our kitchen remodel for a few months. Deano Tile removed our backsplash and replace it with backer board as we finished up some other projects. They came back a few weeks later when we had gotten some other tasks accomplished and installed the tile we purchased from a third party. They helped me pick a grout color that would really make the tile pop. The crew was extremely professional and courteous. They always put down drop cloths and cleaned up after they were done for the day. I would highly recommend their services.

Roy was great to work with and our floor looks nice. He always showed up when he said he was going to and he put down nearly 800 sq feet of tile. The only thing I wish we would have done is we might have needed to pay a little more to have him put down a layer of self leveling underlayment to help keep the tiles all even to each other ... but they look great.

I had one wall (~30sf) of plain square tile backsplash to be completed, with a kind of complicated window to cut around. They did it in less than two days for a great price, and were really responsive and easy to work with. Very satisfied, would hire again or recommend to friends.

Fred was very helpful! He happily provided us a quick estimate using pictures, was willing to work with our short timeline, and let us know where to pick out the exact tile we wanted. While we didn’t have the work done in the end, we will gladly work with him again in the future.

Hector and his brother Caesar did an amazing job on our kitchen tile. I reached out to Hector months before I was ready to install because I was getting quotes. We for sure got our monies worth, it's not always about the price but about the professionalism and quilty of the job. We will for sure have them back when we decide to work on our bathrooms.

We needed our bathroom re-tiled and are very glad we worked with Geoff. His accurate communication, professionalism and outstanding results made it a pleasure to work with Geoff on our project. From the first initial contact for an onsite bid to the start of the project, Geoff clearly stated the steps involved, gave a proposed timeline and then exceeded or met that timeline at every part of the project. Additionally, Geoff's knowledge, attention to detail, work ethic and professionalism prove he is a true craftsman. I will definitely seek to work with Geoff on future projects.

Hector and his brother were amazing. Hector was super polite and answered all of my (and our 4 yr. old's) questions. I can't believe all of the work he did for the price he charged. He should definitely raise his prices because his quality and level of service is worth it. I really appreciate how clean he left our home and the care he took to make sure he didn't drag any snow or dirt in. He even wanted to cut tile somewhere where my son wouldn't walk barefoot. He was totally amazing. We will definitely hire him for any project we have in the future. I'm pretty hard to impress but he was amazing.

We're doing some kitchen remodeling and needed to have our old back splash removed and new one installed. I purchased the material from NFM, but their installers were going to take 4-6 weeks before they could start after the material came in. This was going to create delays in other parts of the project so I came to Thumbtack looking for someone who could get the job done quickly. Hector from New Finish gave me an estimate on here, came by to look everything over to confirm the price, and I scheduled the job. They started and finished on time and were very professional. They took care of their work area, cleaned up each day when they were done, and did a very nice job. I will absolutely hire him again when I need tile work and don't hesitate to recommend him.
