Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

Hired C. Mosley for loading our furniture in the truck. His team arrived on time and did an excellent job moving our furniture. They took extra steps to ensure there wasn't going to be any damage to the furniture.

Brian and his helper were great. I had them moving furniture from a storage unit, and then making a stop to drop off a piece of furniture and then picking up one piece and then to the final destination. I could not have asked for a better experience in moving.

Cartan was fantastic!! I had a few pieces of furniture I needed moved to my basement and a sofa hauled away. He was very punctual and professional and they were very careful with the belongings and moving them down the basement stairs. They even helped rearrange some of the furniture that was already down there to ensure it looked perfect. I would definitely use Cartan again and highly recommend him!

Our 'lead' mover knew how to move furniture! I have a very old house and getting larger pieces upstairs is tricky, if not impossible, but Salim figured it all out quickly! Only reason I'm not doing 5 stars is that the operator who initially took my call was not at all friendly, almost bordering on rude. Maybe he was just having a bad day! I'd hire them again though!

Terrible service - DO NOT USE. They destroyed up over 15,000 worth of my furniture. They advertised moving, lifting, providing pads (they recently changed their advertisement after our complaint) we even provided additional covers for furniture. We used them to load our truck before we drove 13 hours to another state. When we reached our new state, the movers showed us piece by piece as they were unloading all of our damaged furniture. I have pictures below. NONE OF OUR FURNITURE WAS PADDED, ALL OF OUR WOOD WAS CHIPPED, my CHINA CABINET GLASS Shattered. We have filed complaints and they refuse to do anything about it. Why would you pack furniture up in a 26 foot truck with absolutely no padding, when you advertised accordingly? If you didn't provide padding, why didn't you let us know--we would of never allowed those guys to pack our truck up and destroy our furniture? We have a copy of the original advertisement and they still refused to honor. We asked to settle for at least half the value We had no idea it was packed so sloppy and none of our stuff was protected. The company refused to take any responsibility. It got to the point where they started ignoring my calls, my wife called and they answered. Again refusing to take any responsibility In addition, after weeks of unpacking I am finding items missing from my move as I unpack my bags and boxes ( Alexa, IPad, and Laptop)---now we are even more upset because we can only conclude that the movers were stealing our items. We were not watching the guys at all, and didn't think we had to they were both very nice guys, however we know now that they were very inexperienced in loading. The question is why do we have our high priced items missing? We took it a step further and drove back to back to St. Louis in December to make sure nothing was left, and it wasn't---so these items had to be stolen during the load. PLEASE WHATEVER YOU DO - DO NO USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!! The moving company at our destination was very professional and showed us everything prior to bringing items in the house. We have their full support in explaining how our items were mistreated and thrown together. We have contacted an attorney and in the process of suing this company--they should not get away with this - they have left us no choice. Below are just some of the photos from all of our furniture and a copy of their original advertisement.

Cartan texted me to confirm he could arrive early. He and his assistant did a fantastic job of moving several rooms' worth of furniture quickly and professionally. They were pleasant and good to work with, and they didn't leave a mark on anything. They got right to work, and finished our list in an hour. We will definitely use Cartan again.

I could not be happier with the experience and outcome. This was a very short notice and small (in-the-home) move of a single piece of furniture - not a big ticket deal for the movers and during the holiday, as well. A large sofa needed to move down to the basement. Yet, Frank responded very quickly with a reasonable bid and quick scheduling. Matt and Cornelius arrived on time (actually a little early) as scheduled; they performed the service quickly, courteously, professionally, No damages to people (I hope for their part) or property. I would give these folks an A +++ or 6 out of 5 rating and not hesitate recommending Rent A Vet Movers to friends and family - especially Cornelius and Matt. Thanks, guys - obviously couldn't have done this without you. m kopf

I first hired Full Service Moving on a lark. I had bought an antique bedroom set off of Facebook market, and I needed experienced movers stat. Ryan was incredibly responsive, and he and Otis knew exactly how to handle the furniture. I was so impressed with them that when they mentioned that they did longer-haul, full-house moves, we cancelled our appointment with Mayflower, and hired Full Service Movering. They moved my entire house in Southern Illinois to STL in one day. The truck was masterfully packed. Nothing got broken. The team remained consistently upbeat, and they never dogged it. I have had some really terrible movers in my time, and I have had some adequate. I really like Ryan, Otis, and their team. Also, they were really communicative. A great experience. I would use them again, and I strongly recommend their services.

Your Furniture Delivery was excellent. They arrived on time to unload the UHaul truck and worked efficiently to get everything moved into the house and set up. They even tried "every trick in the book" to get a large sofa down a flight of stairs. Even though they thought the sofa wouldn't fit, they still tried and worked very hard to make it fit. We are most appreciative of all their efforts. We would definitely use them again and will recommend them to others.
