Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

If you have a broken appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair pros near you to figure out if it's worth hiring a pro to fix it for you.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an appliance specialist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation or appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, with no in-person contact. After messaging the appliance repairman, you can ask to set up a video chat or phone call to discuss what work needs to be done. Make sure to ask them how they handle payments, keeping in mind that paying in advance may be safer than handling cash or credit cards until the pandemic is over. Ask the professional what procedures and precautions they have in place to ensure safety during this time.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an appliance repairman or specialist when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an appliance service specialist or repairman, check your local news for community guidelines and follow the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Discuss safety protocols with the appliance repairmen before they enter your home. And when they enter your home, stay at least 6 feet apart, don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

If you decide to postpone the work, consider buying a gift card from them or paying for future work. This is a great way to give back to the community, as many small businesses and individual contractors are feeling the economic effects of social distancing.

How can I find out if an appliance repairman or specialist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential provider varies based on state, city and local guidelines. Visit the official government website of your state or city to see which services are considered an essential in your area.

For more information on a national level, read CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an appliance specialist need to enter my home?

If the faulty appliance is located in your home (e.g., a washing machine, refrigerator, toilet, dishwasher, etc.), the appliance repairman will most likely need to come inside to complete their work. However, if your appliance is outdoors (e.g., a grill, outdoor kitchen, etc.), it may be possible for them to complete the work without entering your home and with limited person-to-person contact.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

Appliance Reliance provided us with amazing service at a fair value. The serviceman was prompt, and clearly explained what he was doing and his recommendation, not to mention going above and beyond, installing additional sensors and fan at no charge. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of appliance service/repair.

Appliance was still under warranty, and they refused to repair it. Claimed my location was the problem. If my purchase is still under warranty, than all that's required is your services to fix the problem.....not excuses. Poor, Poor customer service.

He came a little early, went straight to work, finished the job quickly for a decent price and even took care of my dryer issue for free. This guy is great... I highly recommend him for your appliance repair.

It’s always frustrating when something goes wrong, you hire someone to fix it and then the problem ultimately was not fixed. Contacted Appliance Reliance for a leaking refrigerator. He stated it could be 2 problems-- of course the more expensive option (evaporator fan motor) was repaired initially but the leaking persisted. I contacted Appliance Reliance again and I was told that I would have to pay an entirely new fee to have come back to fix the second problem. I am not sure if this how things "go" but I ended up fixing the gasket myself. Will think twice before contacting again.

Had my dishwasher repaired by Appliance Reliance, they were professional and responsive to all messages and did a great job fixing the issue. Took a little longer because parts needed to be ordered. Initial diagnosis did not solve the issue, but they came back out right away to re-diagnose and we were able to get everything resolved easily. Would recommend and rehire again.

I had a particularly difficult issue with a 9 yr old front-loading washer. Vlad replaced the shock absorbers and springs. There was partial improvement, however because the problem was not fully resolved, Vlad did not charge me for the parts and labor (the parts alone were $245) - I don’t know of other repair service companies who would do that. Throughout the process, I was very impressed with Vlad’s courtesy, professionalism, honesty and excellent communication. He truly makes customer service a priority. I will use AR and Vlad if I need appliance repair in the future. Highly recommended

Vlad texted to make sure he knew what issues I was having and got the model number of my appliance so he was prepared when he got here. His first “guess” before starting ended up being correct. He had to come back a couple of days later to finish since he needed a part and couldn’t get to the warehouse after 5 on Friday night. Final repair took about 30 minutes.

We had a tech come on to our site to look at a dishwasher for our business in Charlotte. The tech seemed knowlegable and informed me that some sort of pump was needed. He called whoever his contact was to check on avaibility of the part. He said it would be 10 business days before it would arrive, however he felt confident that he could get it in by friday, this was a monday. Fast forward 8 days later with no response, I called the company to find out what was going on, and they tell me that they cannot get the part? So you order the part, say it will be here, then you cannot get the part, but you dont ever think to notify the customer? When i asked the lady to speak with Randy she said she would have him call me. Still awaiting that call. Would not reccomend when you need an appliance repair.

I have been cheated by Randys Appliance. I went by the reviews here but my experience was nowhere close to what other people have rated. Here is a detail of how Randys Appliance handled my case. My dishwasher stopped working around Aug 19. I raised a request on Thumbtack and Randys Appliance replied saying they will diagnose the issue for $50 and if they do the repair, they will waive off the diagnose fee. I liked that idea and they sent a 2 member team on Aug 20. The 2 folks who opened the dishwasher and tried everything finally reached a conclusion saying that a part needs to be replaced post which the dishwasher will start working. I believed them considering all the good reviews they had here. They said the overall charge will be $350 with $ 200 for the part and $150 for the service to replace that part. They said they will be able to do it in 3-5 days. Nothing happened for 5 days. Hence a week later I sent them a message asking the status and they realized that they haven't yet received the package. So they followed up with post office and were finally able to get the package. If I wouldn't have reminded them they would not have bothered to check that as well. Finally they came to my place on August 30 to replace the part. After replacing the part the dishwasher still did not work. Now they blame the electrical circuit for that. They had initially checked the electrical circuit and confirmed that the circuit is fine and only the part needs replaced. Now they blaming the circuit and telling me to get an electrician to fix it. They also extracted the remaining $150 from my wife as I was not at home saying that they had done their work and now electrician an only solve it. So in all I paid $350 for nothing. I lost my hard earned money just for covering up for their incompetent team. I will forget this money as a donation to Randy but I would let other customers know what to expect when you have a complex job. They might be good at small jobs, but definitely lack expertise for larger jobs. They just care about your money. Worst ever service I have ever seen in my life. I would have spared this review had they not taken that $350 as their whole diagnosis of the problem itself was wrong. Apart from wasting my time and 10 days of washing dishes by hand I have lost my money for nothing You better double check before hiring Randy and his team.
