We recently hired Gene to address some issues with our lawn irrigation system, and we couldn't be happier. Gene is very thorough, and did a great job, and at a very fair price. Shortly after we had a water leak that I thought was related to the irrigation system. Gene came by again, confirmed that it was not the irrigation system but the water main going from the meter to the house, and since he is not licensed to handle this (per county requirements), he had a plumber that he knows come by the following day and take care of the problem. I would highly recommend this company for any irrigation needs you may have - you will not be disappointed.

Justin and his crew did an amazing job on our yard! This was a big job to include irrigation, sod, new plants/mulch and outdoor lighting. They were professional, responsive and very hard working! We are actually going to extend the job to add some additional landscaping around our pool and considering switching to 360 for our lawn maintenance.

Kevin McKoy is OUTSTANDING. He is fair and honest. His forte is lawn care, however, he has a wide resource of networks to extend his services for his customers. I initially contacted McKoy's Lawn Care & Maintenance to give a quote on a fence/gate project. The fence/gate projected expanded to front lawn repair, french drain and flower bed installation. Then he did a full back yard makeover: rock path, lawn, tree & plant installation, flower bed preparation, connecting gutter pipes to drain properly, and large flower/garden beds. In addition, when there was a slight tweak (correction), he was accommodating and ensured that the fix was completed satisfactorily. I would recommend Kevin McKoy.

Gene was a professional and did an amazing job on our landscaping, irrigation and lighting project. It was a fairly large project and we were very happy with the results. He provided the details that we were looking for, from going to several different nurseries in Charlotte to find specific flowers and plants, thus providing us a variety of floral and plant arrangements that filled our front and backyard. He helped us find planter pots and unique plants that would sustain the Charlotte weather thru the 4 seasons. He then put in irrigation and drip system and we ended up doing lighting with Gene as well. Everything was itemized, invoiced and with fair pricing. Really great customer service overall. We plan to work with Gene on an ongoing basis to maintain the great work he just did for us.

Rob completely updated my landscaping; I moved into a house and there were only piles of dirt in the flower beds and not a single plant! I chose some flowers and he suggested adding some ornamental grasses and some potted plants as well. He added mulch that complimented the flowers (and the color of the siding of the house!) and everything looks great. He also trimmed several overgrown bushes along my fence line. I could have never done it like that on my own! Very happy with the work!

Pleasant guys to work with. Friendly and professional. They had a bit harder time in our yard because of unexpected tree roots from a tree that had been removed in the past. The yard is still scarred up in a couple of areas from the trenches they had to dig. This is mostly because of the heavy rains we had after installation washing the dirt and grass seed away. It took a couple of trips back out here to fine tune the system, but they happily did it.

Moved to a new house that had no gutter guards. In previous house I had the Leaf Filter. product installed. It was incredibly expensive and over time the screen mesh got clogged up in several areas which required me to climb up and clean it off. Also in really heavy rain, water tends to spill over. Other than that and $$$$$$ it was a good product. Cody and team used a better product imo or at the very least as good. They literally saved me $3500 vs 2 other quotes on gutter guards for my 3200 sq ft ranch.

I am so happy my other landscaper fell through and I ended up calling Chris at Stripes Are Right! Not only did they come the same day, but they were thorough, knowledgeable and very polite to work with! I hired them for my aeration/fertilizer/over-seeding and they took time to do the job and explain how to maintain it! I'll also be using them for my mowing and upkeep - and I would HIGHLY recommend them! I'll be sure to post pics when my grass grows in! Five Stars *****

I'm so happy with the work done. Communication was outstanding. Everything was done professionally and with great care. I started with just shrub trimming and ended up using them for mulch, planting shrubs, and several small projects. I highly recommend this firm and their pricing is fabulous.

He communicated that he was running late, and mowed lawn while I was at work. When inspecting work morning after noticed that certain things were not done. He mowed over 3 plants of ours and did not trim weeds pictured or communicate that he could not weed eat them. Would not recommend unless situation is rectified with a refund and explanation for reasoning why some items quoted were not done. He was nice and professional in conversation but did not walk through with my roommate after job was finished.

We hired Lucky Lawn to mange our .75 acre lot by cutting, edging, weeding, blowing, bush trimmings, and managing the flower beds and we couldn’t be happier. They showed up on time on the day they said they will and did everything we’d asked per contract. We couldn’t be happier with their service. I would recommend this company to others and will send referrals.

Our home irrigation system did not turn on. The irrigation system not used by the original owner. The problem was the ball isolation value to release the water to the backflow preventer could not be located. We knew this would be a difficult task to locate the valve ourselves. We sought out two bids. One from WZ2WZ and another company to locate the value to release the water and repair the system to full use. WZ2WZ was the best value bid, a woman owned/veteran owned business and hired to do the job. Fast forward 3-days later, our irrigation systems is in full use. WZ2WZ (Dionne Michele and the Technicians) was easy to work with every step of the way. Dionne Michele handled everything in a professional manner and she was informative in the process. I would recommend WZ2WZ without hesitation to anyone in need of an irrigation repair or new install. They did a fantastic job! Patrick & Sylvia McCain Kensington Forest Community Harrisburg, NC

KAM cleaned my house and did a wonderful job, took knobs off my stove and cleaned, I feel like I am a pretty good housekeeper but have me beat hands down. They also cleaned my gutters which was full of these needles from these large trees I have in my yard, not one needle fell to the ground they bagged as they went. I highly recommend KAM for any job you may need done.

I loved working with Eric "The Design Guy"! He did an amazing job of listening to what I wanted and then creating a design that was beyond what I could have imagined. He is patient, helpful, amazingly talented, and just a great guy to work with!! I felt his design skills, customer service and time spent with me, was worth much more than he charges. He went over and above to help me in many ways with my project and even found me fantastic installers when my installers cancelled at the last minute. He answered numerous e-mails of questions, plant changes and even answered phone calls with questions I had while out buying supplies! I can't say enough good things about him and his work!! My landscape is now the talk and envy of my entire neighborhood!! Thank you Eric! You're the best!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
