I had never had to deal with any type of tree services before because usually jobs were small enough to take care of ourselves. However recently we found that we needed a small patch of pine trees cut down that were out of our comfort level with height and general location. I put in my information on Thumbtack and instantly I had a few different companies interested in completing the work for us or at least offering us a free estimate to help with our deciding factor, which truly fell back on budget. A&B Tree Expert (Chris Knight and his crew) were the only ones from Thumbtack that came through with the estimate and did not leave us hanging, which in return landed them the job. The company all together I felt were very professional, had great attitudes, were friendly, timely and did an amazing job at the work that needed to be complete. We were given options and went with the best for us, which were for the company to limb and cut the trees and we would take care of cleaning up and this is exactly what they did. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that if we needed them to do a full clean up, everything would have been just as perfect. Chris climbed each tree safely and with the help of his crew, slowly lowered each limb, making sure not to cause any damage to the fence or our rental home. All and all I am extremely satisfied with the work that was completed in such a timely manner from the free estimate to actually doing the work. He has earn a spot in my file as my new "tree guy" who I will not hesitate to contact again for future tree work. I would also highly recommend them to my friends, family and even you. Thank you Chris (and crew), we really appreciate the fantastic job you all did. -Mindy and Chris

I hired this service to clear out my very overgrown back yard, which is what happened to my "natural and rustic" yard after 12 trees were taken down for solar panels on my roof. Without all the tree roots, weeds that I refer to as "monkey grass" took over, reaching heights of almost 3 feet . I had also wanted to get the area seeded in lawn in an attempt to control the weeds. This service came in and got all the weeds mowed down in a good size back yard, along with my brick patio. It was explained to me that snce the weeds were so high and dense, any seeding would be smothered by what was just cut, and it would be prudent to let the cuttings die off over the winter and seed in the spring. I appreciated the honesty rather than making a futile attempt seeding a lawn which would not thrive. I plan to use this service in the spring to start a new lawn, which will thrive, and would not hesitate to recommend this service.

My entire experience with Stone, Soil and Shrubs has been excellent. I’ve happily contracted lawn service with this company for about ten years. The monthly service plan we have includes all mowing, trimming, all fertilizer and chemical applications, all pruning, and twice yearly seeding as needed. In addition to this, we’ve also retained them to provide a la carte services such as resolving drainage issues, tree removal, hardscaping, sodding, and the planting and transplanting everything from annuals to trees to entire beds. They are reasonably priced for the high level of service they provide and they are responsive to any query or complaint—and those are rare. Most of my immediate neighbors have used them either on contract or for single-service jobs. I have never heard a complaint. It isn’t hard to find someone to mow your lawn. It is very hard to find someone who will treat it like their own, and not take shortcuts.

Jay was a pleasure to work with. Very nice guy that takes great pride in what he does. Gave a fair estimate and completed the work in impressive time. Two large trees were brought down close to my house and deck without insident and with great expertise. Completed the job by grinding the stumps and cleaning up the debris. Somehow even managed to avoid crushing my wife's flower garden? Very impressive and a pleasure to do business with. I would highly recommend Jay Desalvo for anyone looking for a professional tree or landscaping service.

I cannot say enough about Matt and Grimes Grading. Matt came out and gave me a quote right on the spot, and then told me that he could start asap; where many that I got estimates from said a week or two out. I have an acre of land that did not get properly graded and saplings that were falling over, Matt came and said it wouldn’t be a problem. Two days and the trees and yard are clear! Great job done by all!

Rick pruned all our bushes and current landscape as the first step in our process. I was impressed that he did not recommend or ask to take out all plants/trees/bushes and start from scratch. He heard our desire to save some of the landscape and not spend a fortune! He broke the project down into phases to see 1) what could be salvaged and 2) then designed a new landscape incorporating the "old" plants that were saved. He asked what we pictured our yard looking like, promptly provided a design and asked our opinion on the design. We are still working together, and I am comfortable with his knowledge and follow through.

We really were impressed with his services. He did what he said he was going to do. He was on time and very professional. He was a great communicator and educated us on the process on cutting down the trees. My only concern was making sure a tree didn't hit my house or my child's plays set. The company made sure both were still standing. I have and will continue to recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
